Red Bull are bringing far more sets of the harder medium tyre for the next race at the Circuit of the Americas.

Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen will each have four sets of the medium compound for the United States Grand Prix. Rivals Ferrari are only bringing one set for each of their drivers, while of the Mercedes pair Nico Rosberg will take two and Lewis Hamilton three.

Renault’s Jolyon Palmer is taking the most sets of medium tyres with five.

Mercedes and Ferrari will bring more sets of the soft tyres than Red Bull. However Mercedes have chosen one fewer set of the super-softs for its drivers than Ferrari and Red Bull.

    1. What’s the mandatory race compound?

      1. PIRELLI ANNOUNCES COMPOUND CHOICES AND MANDATORY SETS FOR THE 2016 GRAND PRIX OF UNITED STATES

One set of P Zero White medium
One set of P Zero Yellow soft.
Each driver must have both these sets available for the race, and must use at least one of them.

“These are the tyres that Pirelli has said must be used at some point in the race:
        – One set of P Zero White medium
        – One set of P Zero Yellow soft.

There are the tyres assigned for Q3 in qualifying:
        – One set of P Zero Red supersoft”

    2. Ferrari, Sauber and Grosjean seem to have a medium just to make up the third compound ☺

    3. “Red Bull are bringing far more sets of the harder medium tyre for the next race at the Circuit of the Americas.”

That’s a bit over the top. They’re not bringing the most sets of medium tyres but are bringing more sets than their ‘peer group’ who have favoured the soft tyre.

No need to be sensational, or at least be more accurate when making a specific comparison.

    4. Is it just me or does Hamilton always bring one more set of the harder tyre and one less set of the “middle” tyre compared to Rosberg? That’s the general trend I’ve noticed between then, it was the same thing last week in Japan. This decision arguably cost Rosberg the race in Austria though, because if he had just gone on softs in his final stint instead of supersofts, he’d probably have won that race.

      1. The mercedes drivers alternately test prime and option tyre on track at the same time each race. I hope you get me.

In othe words the “distinct” tyres are intended as test tyres that the drivers will test at the same time on track to give a high fidelity tyre comparison. It doesnt really count as a driver selection.

        1. @david-beau – Nice point, and smart on Mercedes’ part to get a differential picture by this approach.

      2. Rosberg lost Austria with brake failure. Hamilton won due to a mechanical problem on Rosberg car but don’t tell his fans it will ruin their conspiracy theories.
