  1. Alonso for win :)

You must be joking, right? Or are you an over-over-over-over-optimistic Alonso fan – a little like me?

      1. Just kidding mate. I am not Alonso fan, but surprised to see him start so low the grid.

    2. Alonso ha behind the both lotus cars lets see tomorrow.

What is it with Ferrari? We know you aren’t good at qualifying, but seriously, FA at 10th? He ain’t no championship contender no more the way things are going. #crushed #dissapoiunted #defeated

    2. I’m not giving up just yet @shreyasf1fan, there are still 11 races to go (tomorrow included). There are still plenty of points on the table

@force-maikel Also, 7 races and 8 qualifying sessions have passed. No poles. In fact, they are deteriorating. Also, in the eleven remaining races, do you expect Vettel will not score? That guy, as much as I hate him, will score a lot more! It’s not about how many points are up for grabs – it is about how many of them Alonso will be able to take, especially with Vettel out there grabbing points “from the table” like a brilliant maniac.

@shreyasf1fan and just to worry you a little more, then comes the “Asian season” and there Vettel is a monster (India, Abu Dhabi, especially Japan)

@omarr-pepper : Come on mate, don’t do that to me.

    3. Lotus and Ferrari designed a car that puts less heat into their tyres in order to increase the tyres life. It worked really well at the start of the year before politics and the moaning of the fans forced them to change the tyres from the softer compounds to the hardest compounds.

Ferrari and Lotus simply cannot get the same level of heat into the tyres that Merc and RBR can. So instead of the tyre becoming like tar and extracting the designs intended level of grip, Ferrari and Lotus’s tyres simply grain because they dont reach a high enough temp. That means their tyres dont last long and also dont give as much grip.

So Lotus and Ferrari have been royally screwed and the two teams who were struggling (Merc and RBR) have been handed the advantage.

      1. Spot on. This will be remembered as the year Pirelli gave the Championship to Vettel & Red-Bull.

      2. Couldn’t agree more, let’s hope the pendulum swings the other way again.

  3. Very impressive pole from Hamilton, as well as great performances from Di Resta, Ricciardo. Nice to see Grosjean getting a good lap in to get ahead of Raikkonen.

Vettel shouldn’t be too displeased, his title rivals on the 5th row. Plus he can get #40 in front of his home crowd.

    1. DiResta’s car is underweight

  4. How does Ferrari expect to win with a car that is so abysmal in qualifying. It was pretty good at the start of the year. so how have they gone backwards?

    1. It’s incredible to see how terrible Ferrari are on Saturday. They started out the season fighting with Lotus for a spot on the 3rd row, and now they’re back to their early 2012 form of barely getting into Q3. Once again if Ferrari end up just falling short of the Championship at the end of the year they’ll have nothing to blame but their abysmal qualifying performance.

      1. Alonso qualified 3rd for three races in a row from Malaysia to Bahrain. So obviously the car wasnt terrible. It had race pace and quali pace. what i don’t understand is how can they maintain their race pace but lose most of their quali pace in a few races time?

        1. Yes, exactly! It’s especially troubling considering the team have been constantly saying that they’re trying to improve their qualifying pace.

If they can’t even maintain their qualifying performance, let alone improve it, what chance do they have of ever starting on or near enough to pole to consistently challenge for victory and thereby the championship?!
I had such high hopes after Spain, thinking “maybe this is Alonso’s year!” but now I can’t see Ferrari mounting a consistent challenge to Red Bull in the driver’s championship. Depressing isn’t a strong enough word for what I’m feeling.

    2. Thanks to Perreli who changed the allocation to the hardest compounds (because they didnt want 4 stops), the Ferrari and Lotus simply cannot put the amount of heat into their tyres that the Merc and RBR can. Their tyres never get into the sweet spot and just grain.

      Screwed by politics.

      1. Absolutely right

      2. @joshua-mesh

Pirelli who changed the allocation to the hardest compounds

At no stage were the tyres for this year’s British Grand Prix going to be anything other than the hard and medium compounds.

  5. kimi and fernando can say goodbye to championship

Or maybe I’ve spoken too soon…

        1. Yeah, quite premature. One pole doesn’t mean he’s in contention based on previous Merc performance on Sunday.

@hellotraverse – You most certainly have spoken too soon. Sad as I am to say this, Vettel may get that Championship again.

          @colossal-squid & @shreyasf1fan
Let me clarify – Hamilton has a genuine chance of winning the WDC.

          1. @hellotraverse Well he’s 55 points behind Vettel as of now, with a car that appears to still haven’t gotten on to of its tyre problems in the race. Vettel is right behind him tomorrow with a great chance of victory.

I’d be astonished if a car that chewed its tyres so much it went from 2nd to 12th in Spain won the WDC. I’ve been wrong before, but I doubt he’s a contender. ATM, there’s only one contender and it’s Vettel.

            Depressingly true.

@hellotraverse : Really? He is 55 points behind Vettel and is no match in the race. So you must be typing in your sleep – a new condition called “sleeptyping” LOL :)

    2. Shreyas Mohanty (@)

They sure can- I am a defeated ALO fan right now. No matter how fast you are in the race – does it really matter if you start up at 10th?

  6. a great lap from Hamilton but Ferrari is very disappointing. I don’t think Mercedes could match Red Bull in the race and Ferrari is struggling with harder compound. It might be the end of the championship unless the trend stops.

    1. It might be the end of the championship unless the trend stops.

I wouldn’t be so quick to write it off just yet. After all, we saw Vettel come from 40-odd points down to win the title last year, so the same could happen here. It’s unlikely, but if Hamilton wins every race from now until the end of the season, he will be champion – even if Vettel finishes second in every race.

      1. Shreyas Mohanty (@)
        29th June 2013, 14:28

Yeah, Vettel did recover 40 points. But the car he has is an all-rounder. Alonso’s isn’t – as it has been clear for the world to see. FA, terminate your contract with Ferrari – RBR will pay anything to get you in place of Webber! And what fun to watch team battles between Alonso and Vettel! Sadly, never gonna happen.

@prisoner-monkeys we haven’t seen a race-effective Mercedes yet, just talking about reducing the distance in points from Vettel. It’s unlikely, I agree, especially because you are assuming something which hasn’t happened yet: Hamilton winning in a Mercedes

        1. OmarR-Pepper (@)
          29th June 2013, 14:38

          we haven’t seen a race-effective Mercedes yet,</blockquote

except for Monaco, a track which is an exception itself

  7. I suppose Ricciardo wants the red bull seat more than anyone as he definitely responded better than Jev or raikkonen

  8. Vettel was disappointed at the end of quali, but for me he should have been delighted – perhaps he didn’t know where Kimi and Alonso had qualified. The championship is effectively over.

      1. Vettel commented something like, “Did he take a short cut?” on learning Hamilton’s time. I think he was unpleasantly surprised at the size of the gap between himself and Lewis.

    1. He seemed happy to me.

  9. Traverse (@)
    29th June 2013, 14:19

I see that Ricciardo and di Resta upped their game now that there’s a vacant seat at RBR, they both appear to have renewed impetus. Also an embarrassing performance from mcLaren and a surprisingly weak performance from Ferrari.

  10. Why is Alonso known as the COMPLETE driver. he cant qualify when it matters… and its coming from a die hard Alonso fan

    1. Shreyas Mohanty (@)
      29th June 2013, 14:29

Alonso isn’t bad at qualifying , the F138 is.

    2. OmarR-Pepper (@)
      29th June 2013, 14:33

      Ouch! +1 @gill

    3. Yes, agree. FA is a great racer, but to be a complete driver you need to be a great qualifier too. And he is far from it.
He was just a few tenths faster than his own time on hards. It’s unfair to blame only Ferrari.

    4. Fernando Alonso stats
      2005: 6 poles, 7 wins
      2006: 6 poles, 7 wins

He’s by no means a bad qualifyer

      1. OmarR-Pepper (@)
        29th June 2013, 16:45

@oel-f1 the fact that you have to go so back to the past to prove your point says otherwise

        1. Traverse (@)
          29th June 2013, 17:03

          +1!

        2. @omarr-pepper the fact that I have to go back so far prove that it was ages ago he had a competitive car

          1. @oel-f1 – This year, 2012, 2010, 2007.

          2. @david-a

Correction; I ment competetive in qualifying. And ok in 2007 he had that too. And yes he was beaten by rookie Hamilton, but then he’s probably the best qualy driver there is.

          3. @oel-f1 – Alonso certainly isn’t a bad qualifier, but still, he isn’t as good as Hamilton and Vettel on that regard. Hamilton took 6 poles to Alonso’s 2 by the way.

      2. @oel-f1
Those stats are pretty much invalid; they’re about 7 years old…

  11. Still more than half the season to go, but Vettel appears to be well on his way to his fourth championship.

  12. Lewis has got some special speed after those adventurous flights with the Red Arrows… Great Job Lewis…. good to see you on Pole….

Vettel did a good lap too …… not enough to beat the Mercs….

And what so ever happened to that Ferrari… They were a good car all year long till now….. Does that mean others made a step forward and Ferrari is still same as the start of the year….

and Oh yeah I am starting to Notice that Force India Cars now…. They are getting close to the front runners…..

  13. What a lap by Lewis, Di Resta and it seem Ricciardo is getting closer to the Red Bull seat, been impressive all season.
Mercedes aren’t in as bad of a position as normal, they have 3 fresh sets of hard tyres but I still see them going backwards

    1. Ricciardo is a pretty neat qualifier, definitely getting more out of the car over one lap than Vergne for most of this and last season.
Would be interesting to see how’d he fare next to another qualifying specialist in Vettel

  14. Great job again by di Resta.

He’s finished higher than where he qualified at every race this year. Will we see a repeat tomorrow?

    1. The force India is pretty kind to it’s tyres too, can see him on the podium tomorrow.

      1. Maybe but chances are high for them with ever slow webber and tyre eating mercedes in the front for them.

  15. OmarR-Pepper (@)
    29th June 2013, 14:53

I think that it’ in the Constructors championship where Mercedes can take 2nd place at the end of the season, cause if you compare them to Ferrari, they are gaining grounds, and Lotus is also starting to lose the “threat” status

  16. Perreli won this for Vettel thanks to the changing of the allocated compounds from softer rubber to the hardest rubber.

    1. So, a new excuse found (involving spelling the name of the tyre supplier wrong), even though we haven’t even done the race yet.

    2. Pirelli lost when they blamed debris. If it was fernando having those 2 punctures instead of Massa in Bahrain or if Fernando’s slow puncture in Spain wasn’t slow we will not be talking about this.

    3. @joshua-mesh
No one has won anything yet. Vettel is starting 3rd on the grid. Hardly a giveaway is it?

    4. the changing of the allocated compounds

There was no changing of the allocated compounds. They allocated medium and hard rubber for Silverstone, and that’s what they ran with.

  17. ESPN reported that Diresta ‘s was failed at Weight check and may get demoted to Back of Grid

  18. Looking good for Ricciardo but he doesn’t usually follow up a great qualifying result with a great race finish, Hope he has a decent start and follows it up with a strong points finish!!
