2013 British Grand Prix

The team radio messages from the British Grand Prix show how drivers and engineers tried to work out what was causing a series of high-speed tyre failures.

Drivers were urged to stay off the kerbs to reduce the risk of incurring a puncture. But some of them later admitted ignoring the advice.

Others had to make the most of races that were suddenly wrecked for reasons seemingly beyond their control: Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa both made it well into the points after their problems and were congratulated by their race engineers afterwards.

As in Canada, Lotus were apologising to Kimi Raikkonen at the end of the race, this time having missed a chance to bring him in for a pit stop during the final Safety Car period. However he did enjoy the benefit of his team mate being told to let him past.

Here’s how the British Grand Prix unfolded in over 200 radio message between the drivers and their teams:

Lap*FromToMessage
PRAndrew MurdochPastor MaldonadoAfter the start it will be clutch seven, fourteen, five
PRPastor MaldonadoAndrew MurdochCopy that.
PRAyao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanRadio check Romain, can you hear me OK?
PRRomain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuYep, radio check’s good.
PRAyao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanOK can we have pit lane speed limiter off please Romain.
PRJonathan EddollsValtteri BottasBottas is reminded to perform a “bite point find”, in which the ECU learns the positions of the teeth of the dog rings in he gearbox so the seamless shift function works properly.
We should be in KERS 1 and we’ll go to KERS 4 at the end of the lap. Just a reminder, try to learn all of the dogs nice and early on in the lap. So we’ll check to make sure. And then cool the car and we should be able to get eight burn-outs.
PRPaul DavisonJules BianchiAnd we’ve got a static bite point once we’ve fired up here. I’ll remind you once we’ve left the grid to do the static bite point. Pit lane speed limiter on as well. Then on the lap round for the start we’ll obviously go mixture one, I’ll tell you a clutch setting. On the first lap of the race we’ll go to revs one, torque two, but I’ll remind you once we’re going. OK?
PRJules BianchiPaul DavisonOK.
PRSimon RennieMark WebberAt the start for the formation lap we’ll do pit limiter off. And it’ll be in torque one, clutch fourteen, so as normal expect some wheel slip.
PRMark SladeKimi RaikkonenJust for interest the car behind Button is the first car on the grid with [hard] tyres.
PRJonathan EddollsValtteri BottasWind direction is tailwind in turn nine, changed very slightly. If anything the strength has increased.
PRSimon RennieMark WebberAfter we’ve fired up just pull the clutch paddle underneath and then go KERS seven, eight, seven. And as usual use 20% KERS at the start please, two-zero.
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonMy seat was very hot when I got inside. In future we need to keep my seat cool.
FLBrad JoyceAdrian SutilUp to 12 and start mode off.
FLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonRS modes cancel. High gear, high speed. We need to be cooling the engine as much as we can. And we need to boost to 20 before turn 15 – we need to boost to 20 at some stage between now and turn 15. So you’re working your tyres, working your brakes, please. And make sure you learn all the gears. We’ll have two burn-outs out of seven – too late, sorry. So you need to remember to back the grid up, they’re stringing out quite a lot.
FLGuillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelAll systems are good so tyre warming as per plan. Straight to your box, focus on KERS at the start and KERS eight when you stop.
FLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo get your brake balance for the first corner and we need three burn-outs please at the most, with three seconds between. And we’re going to stop on the grid for a bite point find, neutral, and RS modes. Brake balance for the first corner and get your steering straight. We cannot report on the last car, we have no TV feed, we cannot see much at all.
FLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonLast car is on the grid.
1Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelRed switch down when you can.
1Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergPedal eight.
1Brad JoyceAdrian SutilOne step rearward brake balance.
2Tony RossNico RosbergBefore the punctures started some teams were already keeping an eye on the left-rear tyre.
So just thinking about keeping your left-rear tyre cool for the first couple of laps.
2Mark TempleSergio PerezPlease use KERS before turn one. Beware of possible debris turns three, four and five.
2Simon RennieMark WebberWebber made contact with Grosjean at the start.
We can see front wing damage. It looks the same as Canada.
2Tony RossNico RosbergGap to Sutil 1.1 seconds. Need to build it.
3Juan Pablo RamirezGiedo van der GardeTemperatures are in the range at the moment but watch out for turn 15 and 18 exit.
3Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelDRS enabled
3Tony RossNico RosbergLeft-rear is 16.2 at the moment, I’ll keep you advised.
3Tony RossNico RosbergJust be aware Webber has dropped back. Car behind you is Sutil. So Sutil can make your race, he could create a gap behind.
3Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSuggest tyre mode 11 for exit snap.
4Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonHamilton’s third lap is a 1’38.38.
Four-tenths faster than Vettel last lap.
4Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelThe time difference to Hamilton is in sector two but use your tyres wisely.
4Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonMix three when you can. One second quicker than Sutl last lap, he’s going to back the cars up.
5Simon RennieMark WebberC, thumb wheel, two
5Tim WrightCharles PicRear-left temperature is six degrees over target, plus six rear left. Hold the Marussias but manage the pace.
5Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonDRS has been enabled.
5Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaWe are changing plan so stay out for the moment.
6Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeMaybe should go Plan B.
6Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenUnderstood Kimi. Suggestion of Plan B.
6Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonHamilton’s fifth lap is a 1’38.19. His lead over Vettel peaked at 2.2s at this point, then began to fall at a slow rate.
Two-tenths faster last lap.
6Mark TempleSergio PerezThis is lap six, how are the tyres?
6Sergio PerezMark TempleThe tyres are going OK. I can feel some graining. But not as bad as on Friday.
7Dave RobsonJenson ButtonHow are the front tyres?
7Jenson ButtonDave RobsonFronts feel like they’re overheating. But also the rears do. I mean, all four feel like they’re overheating.
7Dave RobsonJenson ButtonOK, understood.
7Jenson ButtonDave RobsonYeah front-left graining.
7Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaWe have completed six laps, tell me about the balance.
7Felipe MassaRob SmedleyStarting to feel a bit of front graiing now.
7Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaHalf a click pre-load to the left, let’s see if we can clean it.
8Marco MatassaDaniel RicciardoRicciardo, lying seventh, sets a 1’39.13 on lap six, half a second quicker than he had gone on the lap before.
Good lap, Daniel.
8Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonHamilton’s left-rear tyre explodes on the Wellington Straight. He limps back to the pits.
Tyre switch 12 and you can go mid 12.
9Mark TempleSergio PerezWe are in the window, confirm.
9Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonHamilton enters the pits.
RS modes.
9Jenson ButtonDave RobsonButton’s lap times rise into the 1’41s on lap seven, but improved after that.
Dave, we need to think about getting off this tyre.
9Dave RobsonJenson ButtonYep, understood.
10Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonGo diff mid six, high-speed seven.
10Mark TempleSergio PerezYellow flags turn five and six.
10Felipe MassaRob SmedleyI’ve got a puncture, puncture.
11Felipe MassaRob SmedleyJust blown straight in corner five. Or corner three.
11Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaYeah I can see it here, we saw it on the data as well, it was just a sudden explosion, so??
11Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaLet’s go grip P8 please.
11Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanGrosjean pitted one lap before Alonso and got in front of him.
Track is clear. Fernando just behind you, obviously you are racing him.
12Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelWe think the biggests risks are kerbs exit turn four and turn five.
12Simon RennieMark WebberPeople have been having punctures. Looks like the punctures are caused right-rear turn four and turn five. Be careful of kerbs turn four, turn five exit. Correction: it’s the left-rear in turn four.
12Tony RossNico RosbergAnd box, box, box. Boost to zero.
13Tony RossNico RosbergRemember your brake balance is still rearward, you’re on the [hard] tyre, you will come out in clear air. Perez is the next car behind you. He is approximately three seconds behind. You can afford to look after the tyres a little. And this rear because we obviously have these tyre failures. We’ll keep you advised on temperatures.
13Mark TempleSergio PerezMaximum pushing now, maximum attac.
13Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelBox, box, box. Torque one.
14Sergio PerezMark TempleBox this lap.
14Mark TempleSergio PerezRemember to use all your KERS, we’re going to be racing cars from the exit of the pit lane. Remember to stay right of bollard and limiter. Second gear in the pit lane, launch map one. First gear, brakes on when you stop.
14Andrew MurdochPastor MaldonadoYou need to stay off the kerbs in turn four and five.
14Tony RossNico RosbergVettel is on [hard] tyres. We believe he is on a three-stop strategy.
14Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelYou’re still plus three Rosberg.
14Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanGrosjean is ordered to let Raikkonen overtake him. As he does on the Hangar straight, Vergne’s left-rear tyre fails in front of them.
Kimi is faster than you.
15Jean-Eric VergnePhil CharlesVergne is the next driver to head to the pits with a shredded left-rear tyre.
I have a puncture.
15Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneDRS is disabled, JEV.
15Tony RossNico RosbergDRS is disabled, for information.
16Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelVettel is receiving a routine message when the Safety Car is deployed.
Protect your left-rear, build a gap to Rosberg. Safety Car! Stay out.
16Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelSebastian you had damage to your left-rear tyre previous stint. You’ve got to stay off the kerbs as best you can. There are punctures all around.
16Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenPit lane entry to pit lane exit is free.
16Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeOK.
16Mark TempleSergio PerezMake sure to keep temperature in the brakes and drive to the Safety Car delta.
17Mark WebberSimon RennieWhat the hell happened on that start? Unbelievable.
17Simon RennieMark WebberUnderstood. Got to do the best we can from here.
17Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenAfter this lap you don’t need to follow the delta. It’s only for this lap to the start/finish, to Safety Car line one.
17Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeUnderstood.
17Mark WebberSimon RennieSorry, what happened to Sebastian?
17Simon RennieMark WebberHe’s still running but his tyres had some cuts. At the pit stop we found cuts in his left-rear tyre. We need to be careful of the left-rear tyre.
17Mark WebberSimon RennieOK.
18Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaThe issue with the tyres, we’ve had three tyre explosions in the race. They’ve asked to keep the pressures a bit higher. We had a free pit stop there so we did it, we put a new set on with higher pressures and it didn’t cost us anything.
18Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergNico if two-stop comes into question it will be 22 laps on this stint. Given the failures that they had I don’t think it’s going to happen but we keep the eye open.
19Tony RossNico RosbergRosberg’s race engineer gets his Ferraris mixed up.
Just be aware there’s obviously been a multitude of rear tyre failures. It’s happening when the tyres are getting hot and we think when the tyres are running over kerbs. Alonso had a failure in turn four, that’s why we warned you to watch the apex kerb at turn four. Obviously the high-speed corner exit kerbs could cause some problems.
19Nico HulkenbergMarco SchupbachThese were all tyre failures, no contact?
19Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergTo my information, yes.
19Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaWe are back in this race. You’re P11. Button ahead new medium, two laps younger than yours. All other cars ahead on hard tyres apart from Sutil who chose medium tyres for the second stint and will have to go hard for the final stint.
19Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelIt’s been a bit busy the last few laps. There has been some punctures on at least three cars. Mostly left-rear tyre. It’s on the inside shoulder. At this point we’re not sure whether it’s a tyre problem or a kerbing proble. So we’ll deal with the tryre problem from our side. From your side, try to stay away from the kerbs and try to save your left-rear tyre.
20Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelSebastian, try to burn up some fuel please. Low gear, high revs, burn up the fuel.
20Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelFor the restart it’s mix five and KERS eight. I’ll repeat when we get closer to that. Remember Safety Car line rules. No overtaking before Safety Car line one, including the Safety Car itself. You need to drop back a lot from the Safety Car because you’re much quicker than those guys on Hangar Straight at the back. Be careful turn 16, obviously.
20Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelDon’t forget, ten car lengths behind Safety Car and no erratic driving either. I know it’s not easy, mate.
20Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelKeep on working on the fuel consumption, you can do better than this. Other cars are doing much better than you.
20Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenPlease use KERS to 50% each lap behind the Safety Car.
20Tony RossNico RosbergYou’re doing a good job on the rears at the moment, Nico. Don’t get the brake temps too hot, they’re now getting a bit on the hot side.
20Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYou need to stay within ten car lengths to the car ahead, that’s just information.
21Jenson ButtonDave RobsonIt might take a little while for these guys to clean the whoel circuit.
21Simon RennieMark WebberSafety Car is in this lap, keep working the tyres. KERS eight and mixture six. Remember you can overtake at Safety Car line one, before turn 16.
21Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaSmedley advises Massa on how to pass Van der Garde at the restart, which he does.
After Stowe we’re going to put the ED button on. And then you can overtake from Safety Car line one which is the Safety Car line at the pit entry. So from the pit entry onwards you can overtake. So you can even run at Van der Garde round turn 15.
22Tony RossNico RosbergJust remember looking after that left-rear.
22Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelGood job. Watch out for exit kerbs, high-speed corners with your left-rear.
22Simon RennieMark WebberWe think it’s high-speed exits that are damaging the tyres. Stay off the kerbs in high-speed exits.
22Tony RossNico RosbergThe pressures are building up nicely, still on the low side so just continue to be cautious.
23Brad JoyceAdrian SutilAlonso pressures Sutil for third place.
Use KERS to defend.
23Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaSilverstone zero two.
23Tony RossNico RosbergTarget eight at the end of this lap. Rear pressures still coming up nicely, just keep looking after it.
24Simon RennieMark WebberDRS is now active.
24Tony RossNico RosbergConsider coming down on diff entry and diff mid for understeer.
24Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonHarvest mode three when you can.
25Tony RossNico RosbergHarvest five, you’re doing a good job there. Gap to Sutil three-and-a-half seconds, we’re building it up nicely. Left-rear temperature is under control now.
25Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoWhen you can, boost magnettino zero.
26Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanThink about tyres at turn nine and turn eleven.
26Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelMake sure you open the gap to Rosberg progressively. You’re doing a good job.
26Tony RossNico RosbergTry carrying less speed into turn seven and get more speed out of it.
26Tony RossNico RosbergRemember to drink.
26Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergHulkenberg pitted to change to medium tyres on lap 25.
In front of you Bianchi, Pic [hard]. Behind you Chilton, Van der Garde [hard]. Behind these ones is Vergne, he also stopped for new [mediums] this lap.
27Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonThrottle/brake overlap is preventing KERS charging so just minimise that where you can.
27Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoA part-Italian radio message to Alonso indicates his next pit stop will be in three or four laps. He eventually pits on lap 30.
Hard or medium?
27Fernando AlonsoAndrea StellaHard.
27Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoOK
27Tony RossNico RosbergConsider coming down on diff entry and diff mid. Let us know if you need a flap adjust at the stop, what kind of aero balance increase.
28Dave RobsonJenson ButtonHow are the front tyres? Are they graining?
28Jenson ButtonDave RobsonFront-left yes, a little. But I also have poor traction.
28Dave RobsonJenson ButtonWhat is your current preferred tyre? [Hard] or [medium]?
28Jenson ButtonDave Robson[Medium]
28Tony RossNico RosbergRosberg told he might have to stay out for more than the planned three laps,
You are in your safety car window. Target three at the moment but we may extend to get a gap.
29Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelBe ready, line one.
29Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelDebris, turn 15, yellow, turn 15.
30Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoTrack is clear. Not sure the DRS?? OK.
30Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaDRS is enabled now.
30Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezGutierrez had a front-left tyre failure on lap 29 and returned to the track on hard tyres.
Show us the lap time you can do, Esteban. One more lap.
30Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoBox this lap. Front wing OK?
31Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoBox now, start map on.
31Tony RossNico RosbergRosberg reduced Vettel’s lead by 0.8 seconds in two laps so that it was 3.2s by lap 30, after which the gap stabilised.
You’re doing a good job there to close down Vettel. You’re half a second a lap quicker than him.
32Simon RennieMark WebberEngine 20, two-zero.
32Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanGrosjean was passed by Webber on lap 29.
OK we are racing Webber, he’s pitting this lap.
32Dave RobsonJenson ButtonWe are box this lap.
32Jenson ButtonDave RobsonBox this lap.
32Dave RobsonJenson ButtonRecommend up one turn front wing.
32Jenson ButtonDave RobsonUp one turn.
33Dave RobsonJenson ButtonLaunch map on, first gear before you stop and apply the brakes. Let’s nail these marks. We wil be racing Checo.
33Dave RobsonJenson ButtonLaunch map off and use KERS at the exit, we are racing cars at the exit.
33Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaBox and pit confirm please, Paul. Empty KERS.
33Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelYellow ahead. I don’t know the reason, be careful.
33Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelRemember, be ready, line one.
33Mark TempleSergio PerezBox this lap, confirm.
33Sergio PerezMark TempleOK box this lap.
34Dave RobsonJenson ButtonYou will be racing Checo at the pit exit.
35Tony RossNico RosbergBox, box, box. Boost to zero.
35Tony RossNico RosbergBrake balance is still rearwards. You are on the medium tyre.
35Mark TempleSergio PerezPerez has jumped Grosjean in the pits.
Great job before the pit stop. We’re currently P10. Massa in front is on 18-lap old tyres so he will definitely have to pit. Hamilton in P6 is also going to have to pit so we’ve got a great chance to get some points here. Let’s make sure these tyres last to the end of the race. We’ve got 17 laps to go after this one.
36Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelWatch your speed, hit your marks.
36Tony RossNico RosbergCancel RS when you can you are into clear air. Looking after the left-rear important for the first few laps. There are 18 laps remaining, you are going to the end of this set.
36Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelYellow turn three ahead. You have plenty of time.
36Simon RennieMark WebberYellow turn three and four, maybe debris.
36Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelStill plus three Rosberg.
36Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaBox at the end of this lap.
36Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelThe tyre pressures on this set are very high all round, intentionally, to protect the punctures. This might affect the balance as well as rear temperatures, so be careful. 16 laps to go.
37Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenWe need to try to use less KERS to get it charged back up. So try to get down to only 90%. That’ll be down to ten on your dash, each lap.
38Tony RossNico RosbergLeft-rear under control, you can push now.
38Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergBox, Nico, box, box, box.
38Nico HulkenbergMarco SchupbachCopy, copy, copy.
38Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoSame lap time as Sutil behind, he is four-and-a-half behind us.
38Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaNice one. Hamilton, Di Resta the cars in front now. They put the tyres on more or less the same time as us. Hamilton the same lap, Di Resta five laps earlier. Hamilton just passed Di Resta.
39Paul DavisonJules BianchiPic did a 38.2 that lap so he’s pushing hard, I think his deg will be high at the end of the race. Just stick with Gutierrez, mate.
39Tony RossNico RosbergRear wear is not a problem. Front is limiting.
39Tony RossNico RosbergRosberg took half a second out of Vettel’s lead on the lap after this message, then the gap rose again.
14 laps remaining. The Vettel gap 2.2 seconds so close him down, think about closing him down.
39Tony RossNico RosbergLapped cars in front of Vettel, two lapped cars in front of Vettel.
39Tony RossNico RosbergDelay your boost out of turn seven by 40 metres.
39Andrew MurdochPastor MaldonadoWe need revs position three.
40Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonWe’re going to the end on this tyre set. 13 laps remaining.
40Mark TempleSergio PerezThere’s 12 laps to go after this one. Pace is looking good, we can afford to push a little bit more but we do need to be able to have tyres at the end of the race as Hamilton is behind us but he is going at quite good pace so he may well catch us up before the end so we need to make sure we’ve got tyres we can race with at the end. We’re also gaining on the cars in front slightly, so there may be opportunities to get them toweards the end of the race.
41Simon RennieMark WebberIf you don’t think you can pass Raikkonen, drop back to look after the tyres. If you can’t pass Raikkonen we need to save the tyres.
41Esteban GutierrezFrancesco NenciI think front-left tyre is graining again.
41Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezCopy, box, in this lap.
41Esteban GutierrezFrancesco NenciDon’t worry, it’s OK, I can keep going.
41Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezYou will not make it in the end. Front-left will not make it to the end so we better box now and not lose time.
41Esteban GutierrezFrancesco NenciCopy.
42Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinI lost drive, lost the gearbox.
42Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelUnderstood.
42Nico RosbergTony RossVibration, left rear.
42Tony RossNico RosbergCopy that Nico, we’re looking. Let us know if it’s getting worse, Nico.
42Nico RosbergTony RossGetting worse.
42Tony RossNico RosbergSafety Car. Keep the delta time positive, just bring it down, you are OK. The gap behind to Raikkonen is 13 seconds. He has to maintain that gap. So just drive to the Safety Car time and we’ll box this lap.
42Tony RossNico RosbergIt’s not clear whether this message to Rosberg was broadcast before or after the preceding exchange.
We’re going to box this lap, Nico, we’re going to box this lap.
42Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelAlright Safety Car is deployed, Sebastian, so you should be safe. There’s a gap in the fence right behind your car, the Safety Car board.
43Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanRemember to push on the pit lane entry.
43Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeI don’t know if we made the right choice not to pit.
43Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenI don’t know, Kimi, but it’s too late now so stick to the plan.
43Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeI can overtake? Or not?
43Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenIf the Safety Car is showing the green light you can overtake it.
43Tony RossNico RosbergChilton is behind you and then Raikkonen who is P2 at the moment. Still keep the delta time positive.
44Tony RossNico RosbergWe think we see a start of a delamination or blister in the centre of the tread. There’s going to be less than ten laps remaining. It’s going to be really important to look after that left-rear. The car behind you is Raikkonen, he has much slower pace, so it’s just managing that gap when the restart comes. Really important to put temperature into everything at the moment.
44Jenson ButtonDave RobsonThis is going to be quite a long Safety Car because we’ve got lappewd cars.
44Dave RobsonJenson ButtonYep that’s correct Jenson, Lapped cars may now overtake.
44Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenLapped cars are now overtaking the Safety Car.
44Nico RosbergTony RossIs that it? Just two lapped cars?
44Tony RossNico RosbergA-firm, that’s it, just two lapped cars.
44Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenYou’re in recovery five at the moment, we want KERS recovery four please.
45Mark TempleSergio PerezPerez was mistakenly told Button had pitted for fresh tyres.
Webber in front and behind, Jenson, Alonso and Hamilton are on new tyres, they will be quick. But Ricciardo and Sutil in front, we’ve definitely got an opportunity to gain places there, so we’re going to push hard for the last laps after the Safety Car comes in. The tyres will be fine, we can push, just make sure tyre temperatures are good. Keep warming the brakes.
45Tony RossNico RosbergJust a reminder: When the Safety Car pulls in you control the pace when the lights go out.
45Simon RennieMark WebberWhen it does restart just need to pick these cars off one at a time. We should have five or six laps to pick these cars off.
45Simon RennieMark WebberObviously we’re on fresh [mediums], no need to look after the tyres. Do your best to get past all these cars.
45Mark WebberSimon RennieIt’s going to happen, mate.
45Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenKERS mode – that’s it – Safety Car is in this lap, thank you.
45Tony RossNico RosbergSo just control the pace, no braking and accelerating, and then just go when you want.
46Tony RossNico RosbergThe race restarts.
Remember looking after that left-rear at the start.
46Tony RossNico RosbergSo Raikkonen is on 16-lap old tyres, so just looking after that tyre, most important.
46Sergio PerezMark TempleI have a puncture.
46Mark TempleSergio PerezOK box this lap, R12.
47Mark TempleSergio PerezBe careful when you stop on your marks. We’re going to need the brakes on, launch map on in the pit lane.
47Brad JoyceAdrian SutilSo you’ve got Webber behind on newer tyres. KERs one and there’s yellow flags turn 13.
47Mark TempleSergio PerezStop the car, stop the car Checo, switch off. Switch the engine off there’s a lot of damage to the car. I’m really sorry about that Checo that was a fantastic race up until then, you did everything right.
47Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenNext car is Webber.
48Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaRicciardo the car in front. Alonso, Hamilton passed Ricciardo.
48Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoAlonso is told in Italian DRS is disabled because of a yellow flag at turn 15.
48Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonFive laps remaining. Again yellow 13 to 15. DRS disabled there.
48Tony RossNico RosbergBehind Rosberg, Webber has replaced Raikkonen in second place.
Yes, you need to push to keep him behind. There are four laps remaining at the end of this lap, he is on new option tyres.
49Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaMassa passes Sutil.
That’s good mate. Hamilton the car in front.
49Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenHaving been passed by Webber, Raikkonen loses another place to Alonso.
Next car is Alonso, DRS disabled again. Same yellow flag, 13 to 15.
50Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaGrosjean possible damage.
50Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonKERS harvest mode five. Kimi ahead of Alonso is on seven-lap older tyres.
51Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaTwo laps to go, we want this sixth position.
51Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanBecause we’re out of points now and for safety we’re going to retire the car.
52Tony RossNico RosbergHarvest seven, please. Last lap.
52Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanCopy that. Left-hand end plate is completely missing. We saw the contact after the Safety Car.
52Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuNot much, I think there was no contact.
52Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanOK.
VLTony RossNico RosbergYes! Great job, great job Nico. Excellent, well done mate.
VLNico RosbergTony RossWoo! Yeah! Come on!
VLChristian HornerMark WebberWell doen Mark that was a great recovery drive. Well done, really great reocvery.
VLMark WebberChristian HornerYep, cheers guys.
VLChristian HornerMark WebberCouple more laps and I think you would have got there.
VLRoss BrawnLewis HamiltonWonderful drive, Lewis. Sorry it didn’t quire work out but great drive, well done.
VLLewis HamiltonRoss BrawnFantastic job this weekend, guys. It’s a shame about the tyre.
VLJenson ButtonDave RobsonWe either got unlucky there or we made the wrong cal in terms of being on old tyres at the restart.
VLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonEpic recovery there Lewis. That’s P4. Great job there, man, I’m real gutted for you. So the final result: Nico won it, and that’s a great result for the team, we’ve got Webber in second, Alonso third, Lewis fourth, then Raikkonen, Massa, Sutil, Ricciardo, Di Resta and hulkenberg.
VLMark SladeKimi RaikkonenFantastic drive, mate, sorry about the strategy potential cock-up.
VLBrad JoyceAdrian SutilWell done, Adrian, great job mate.
VLRob SmedleyFelipe MassaSmedley also read the top ten out to Massa.
That’s a good drive, very good drive. Canny drive. Sixth position. So disaster at the start with that puncture and then we drove through and did well. Lots of attrition as well that we managed to keep out of. Shame there wasn’t a couple of laps longer because you were catching Kimi quickly. Good recovery, well done.

  1. That’s twice in two races – now I’m convinced “Remember to drink” is a secret code word for some strategy or setting that Rosberg uses during the race! Wonder what it is…

    1. It think this secret code reminds the driver to drink is he forgets to when concentrating on driving. :)

    2. must be to not loose weight during the race like PDR

      1. This wouldn’t make a difference as the fluid goes from car to driver…and both are weighed at the end.

    3. An explanation could be to change the fuel mixture to increase fuel flow. Whatever it is, it’s almost guaranteed a secret code – remember Schumacher’s “magic paddle”?

    4. I wonder if the teams have sensors to know if their drivers are drinking or not.

  2. Noticed Hamilton doesn’t say anything though the race only at the start and at the finish

    1. @wackyracer Remember this is only what FOM broadcast – there will be loads more unbroadcast stuff.

For example when Rocquelin was trying to get Vettel to back off in Canada a few weeks ago he apparently reminded him of Senna crashing at Monaco in 1988. That wasn’t heard on the main feed or pit wall channel.

  3. Read this whilst giving my daughter her dinner.
Alex Brown: Pudding at the end of this fork-full, Lily. Pudding confirm. Lolly or yoghurt?
    Lily Brown: Lolly.
Alex Brown: Do you need a balance change?
Lily Brown: Can I sit on your knee?
Alex Brown: Copy that. Keep managing your chin, use a wetwipe if you have to.
    Lily Brown: Ok, Daddy.
    Alex Brown: Remember to drink.

    1. Haha, there’s defininitely potential for a ‘speak like a race engineer day’

      1. @dogmop Just begin every sentence with “OK” and end it with “look after your tyres”.

        1. “but don’t lose any time”

          1. “For sure.” Oh, sorry, that’s for interviews ;-)

    2. Ha haa, good one.
      “well done, you did it”

    3. Thanks boys! It was absolutely fantastic! ;)

  4. I was trying to find some information regarding the deployment of the SC after Vettel’s retirement, but no clues what so ever, anyone wants to help me with this? And if it was debris why took them so long to release it?

    1. Vettel parked the car not far from a gate in the pit wall, so it should have been quick. First, the marshalls need to wait until the field is bunched so there is a large gap in the traffic to allow them to move around safely on the track. This takes a few laps (maybe two or three if the field is spread out). However, the marshalls had to abort the first attempt to recover Vettel’s car as the field led by the safety car was coming (+1 lap). The second attempt was successful. Then the lapped cars were allowed to unlap themselves (+1 lap). So overall, it took around 4-5 laps or so under the safety car, which is consistent with the commentary above (Vettel reporting lost drive on lap 42, and safety car in this lap on lap 45). So it wasn’t really that long.

I agree though that the lapped drivers should not be allowed to unlap themselves. If anything, they should let themselves fall back to the end of the pack.

@mike-dee I’m only guessing but maybe the reason why they have to unlap is to make sure they’ve run for the same number of laps as the cars they were fighting with, for example if car 20 was a lap down but not car 19 maybe there’s an advantage for 20 in running one less lap of the race.

        1. Is there some reason why don’t they just drop into the pitlane and wait while the other cars go past, then rejoin afterwards?

    2. @johnmilk You can see the difficulty the marshals had recovering Vettel’s car here:

      1. cheers for the info. it is quite funny as well

  5. Alonso pressures Sutil for second place.

    Should be “third”.

Launch map on, first gear before you stop and apply the brakes. Let’s nail these marks. We wil be racing Jenson.

Not quite sure what that’s all about – you are your greatest enemy? :P
But anyway, massive thanks for putting this up so quickly, Keith!

    1. @andae23 Corrected both, thanks.

  6. Funny how they were asking Vettel to burn more fuel. Bet they won’t be saying that next year :)

  7. I laughed at JB’s conversation with his engineer. It was so calm and easy…

as if they were having tea together chatting about life…

    1. Dont know about that. Sounded like a lot of nagging from Jenson again –

Dave Robson Jenson Button How are the front tyres?
Jenson Button Dave Robson Fronts feel like they’re overheating. But also the rears do. I mean, all four feel like they’re overheating.
Dave Robson Jenson Button OK, understood.
Jenson Button Dave Robson Yeah front-left graining.

Maybe they’re like an old couple drinking tea? One old nagging wife and a fed up husband

  8. Ayao Komatsu “Copy that. Left-hand end plate is completely missing. We saw the contact after the Safety Car.”
Romain Grosjean “Not much, I think there was no contact.”

    Well, duh!

  9. Anyone notice how little conversation there is between Alonso and the pit wall? I’ve noticed this for the last few weeks, there is hardly any, it’s really interesting when others are been told how to overtake, when to drink and manage the car.

  10. Hamilton’s engineer said a hell of a lot to him on the formation lap. I have no idea what any of it means, but it worked!

    Love this feature btw.

  11. Agreed, brilliant feature

  12. Whoa ! So technical .. especially changing knobs , diff ,looking after tyres, KERS harvest, and all this while negotiating sweeping curves at 200kmph . Respect .

Ferrari don’t talk too much (Alonso ) . Oh, Maybe its in spanish and hence not broadcast.

    1. @hamilfan

Maybe it’s in Spanish and hence not broadcast.

Actually Ferrari’s messages to Alonso seem to be in a mix of English and Italian – sometimes even combining words from each into a single sentence. For example the message referred to on lap 48 was almost entirely in Italian except for the word “yellow” instead of “giallo”.

  13. What does “Safety Car Delta” mean exactly?

    1. This refers to the target time drivers must not exceed when the Safety Car is deployed, as defined by article 40.7 of the Sporting Regulations:

In order to ensure that drivers reduce speed sufficiently, from the time at which the “Safety Car deployed” message is shown on the official messaging system until the time that each car crosses the first safety car line for the second time, drivers must stay above the minimum time set by the FIA ECU.

  14. Not related to tyres or anything much, but I found this bit noteworthy during the race already:

20 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Sebastian, try to burn up some fuel please. Low gear, high revs, burn up the fuel.

20 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Keep on working on the fuel consumption, you can do better than this. Other cars are doing much better than you.

So first Vettel should burn some fuel, then he’s using too much under that first SC? Maybe he could have been told to burn a little, but not too much in the first place!

    1. Or was it still about burning up more fuel, not less?

      1. Yes, I would imagine both were about using up your fuel.

    2. @bosyber I assume that they want the drivers to burn up fuel under the safety car because their consumption is lower at the SC delta time, hence they will end up carrying more fuel than necessary for the balance of the race which they want to avoid.

    3. @bosyber What I wondered is how do they know how well other drivers in other teams are doing at burning up fuel? Perhaps they get data on how the Lotus, Williams and Caterham drivers are doing through Renault.

      1. Indeed @keithcollantine, that is a good question; Webber they obviously know. For the others, could it be they just listen to engine sounds again, coonverting that into amount of throttle and how lean an engine iis running? That seems complicated, but who knows; they have that analyis anyway over the weekend, don’t they?

  15. 15 Jean-Eric Vergne Phil Charles Vergne is the next driver to head to the pits with a shredded left-rear tyre.
    I have a puncture.
15 Phil Charles Jean-Eric Vergne DRS is disabled, JEV.

That engineer was a bit… Slow, to say the least.

    1. @hunocsi Not necessarily. Vergne’s tyre failed just before the pit lane entry, it didn’t take him long to get in. I expect he got the DRS message as he returned to the track having put fresh tyres on.

  16. Reading the last bit from Peter Bonnington to Lewis Hamilton “Great job there, man, I’m real gutted for you.”
Me thinks Lewis’ way of speaking is rubbing off a bit!

  17. I also like how the drivers describe a tyre explosion as a “puncture”.

    lot of tupos

  19. The FOM race highlights video for the British Grand Prix includes a few other bits of radio which weren’t broadcast at the time including Smedley saying Massa’s tyre failure “would have to happen in the ******* worst place” and Vergne being urged to put in some quick laps just as his tyre went pop.
