Red Bull fly to victory but FIA set to clip their wings (Red Bull race review)

Red Bull’s performance advantage was visible from first practice at the Hungaroring. It reached a peak of 1.214 seconds per lap – the gap between pole-sitter Vettel and third placed Fernando Alonso in qualifying.

But the flexing front wing which helped them achieve such amazing speed is likely to be outlawed at the next race.

Sebastian Vettel

Vettel usually looked able to get better performance out of the super-soft tyre than his team mate. So it proved in qualifying, where Vettel claimed yet another pole position.

He kept his lead at the start and disappeared from the chasing Fernando Alonso at up to a second per lap.

But his cruise to victory was interrupted by the appearance of the safety car. Struggling with a radio that was only working intermittently, he failed to keep up with Webber and was handed a drive-through penalty.

That left him third behind Alonso and unable to get close enough to the Ferrari to pass. At one point he had the gap down to just 0.4 seconds but under-steered off at turn four, struggling in Alonso’s slipstream.

His facial expression on the podium said it all as he contemplated another opportunity to take the lead of the championship lost.

Mark Webber

He was beaten to pole position by his team mate, then beaten to turn one by Alonso. But a smart strategic gamble by his team and a series of red-hot laps by Webber won him the race.

It’s a testament both to the capabilities of the car and its driver that Webber was able to pull out a 22-second lead over Alonso in 25 laps using tyres which covered more than half the race distance.

Webber’s fourth win of the year put him back in the lead of the drivers’ championship.

But the FIA have announced that as of the next race in Spa the teams’ front wings will be subject to new load tests. This may make it impossible for Red Bull to use their front wing which is clearly deflecting greatly at high speed and providing a significant performance benefit.

How Kamui Kobayashi gained 14 places to finish ninth (Hungarian GP analysis)

Kamui Kobayashi might not have fancied his chances of scoring a point from 23rd on the grid but he was able to pick up two, thanks in part to a very effective start.

But Sebastian Vettel ended the race two places lower than he started, unable to attack Fernando Alonso for second. Perhaps he could have done with the F-duct Red Bull took off their car this weekend?

Lap 1

As is often the case at the Hungaroring the drivers on the clean side of the grid got the best starts. Alonso passed Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton got alongside Felipe Massa – but had to back off as he got boxed in behind Webber.

That allowed Vitaly Petrov – who’d also started on the clean side of the grid and already passed Nico Rosberg – to pass Hamilton at turn one.

What went wrong for Jenson Button? He got of the line well from 11th and was tenth as they ran down to turn one. But with Rosberg, Robert Kubica and Pedro de la Rosa three-abreast in front of him he had nowhere to go.

That allowed both Williamses and Adrian Sutil to charge down the inside, while Michael Schumacher went around him by using the run-off area at the exit. Finally Vitantonio Liuzzi – who seemed to tap the rear of Button’s car as they came out of turn one – out-dragged him on the way to turn two.

Pit stops

The usual sequence of pit stops had just begun, with Button the first man in, when the safety car was deployed. This meant that on the 15th lap 16 cars came into the pits at once (including the lapped Sakon Yamamoto).

After the safety car in Mark Webber spent 26 laps building up enough of a lead over Fernando Alonso to come out in the lead.

It’s clear to see the change in Vettel’s pace on laps 28-30 as he got his foot down in anticipation of his penalty. He came out in third place behind Alonso, and it seems likely that even if Hamilton hadn’t retired, Vettel would have resumed in the same place.

Vettel spent most of laps 40 to 66 within one second of Alonso but unable to attack his rival, largely because of Red Bull’s straight-line speed deficit. They ran their car without their F-duct this weekend.

Kobayashi started 23rd and finish ninth, picking up more points for Sauber. How did he gain so many places?

He began by picking off all five of the new teams’ drivers that started in front of him on the first lap. This was by no means a given – we’ve seen other drivers in similar situations fail to do the same in recent races. Kobayashi out-dragged three of them down to turn one and pick off the others by positioning his car well in the first corners.

He also got ahead of Sebastien Buemi on the first lap and followed Button past Liuzzi a few laps later.

Sauber avoided him losing too much time behind his team mate in the pits by leaving him out for an extra lap. At the restart he passed Schumacher, and from there on retirements in front of him took care of the rest.

As ever the Hungaroring proved extremely difficult to overtake on, though Rubens Barrichello was able to use fresh tyres to scrape past the characteristically obstinate Michael Schumacher.

Hungarian Grand Prix in pictures

F1 was lucky to avoid disaster with two dramatic incidents which took place in the pit lane during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

First Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes shed a wheel which struck a mechanic. Moments later Robert Kubica and Adrian Sutil collided in between their teams’ pit boxes.

Webber grabs Hungary win after Vettel blunder (Hungarian Grand Prix review)

Mark Webber scored his fourth win of 2010 in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

He hit the front by staying out of the pits during an early safety car period, then built up enough of a gap to keep his lead ahead of Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel.

His team mate was delayed by a drive-through penalty for failing to stay close enough to Webber behind the safety car.

There was much attention on Vettel at the start after his poor getaways in recent races. But he held first place this time and Alonso followed him through into second ahead of Webber.

With Alonso keeping Webber behind, Vettel stretched his lead very quickly, leaving them behind at the rate of a second a lap.

The safety car came out after Vitantonio Liuzzi lost part of his front wing and almost every car came into the pits at once. Webber was a significant exception, Red Bull gambling on him being able to build up enough of a gap over Alonso once the race had resumed to leapfrog the Ferrari.

But the busy pit lane had dangerous consequences. Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes shed its right-rear wheel, flinging it towards dozens of mechanics. It struck one Williams mechanic, but mercifully his injuries were light.

There was more chaos. Renault released Robert Kubica out of his pit box as Adrian Sutil ahead was swinging in to his.

The pair collided, putting Sutil out of the race, and Kubica retired later following a stop-go penalty. The stewards will investigate the incident further.

It was at the restart of the race where it all went wrong for Vettel. He allowed Webber to get too far ahead and the stewards later hit him with a drive-through penalty.

By the time he served his penalty he had built up enough of a gap to only lose one place to Alonso – though he also lost the opportunity to inherit his lead back from Webber.

A furious Vettel spent the rest of the race trying to get close enough to Alonso to make a move. His best opportunity came after the two split the Lotus drivers, allowing Vettel to get within half a second of his rival. But he ran wide at turn four and the moment was lost.

Felipe Massa had a quiet race to fourth. He moved up to the place when Lewis Hamilton retired early in the race with a loss of drive.

Hamilton had fallen behind Vitaly Petrov at the start but re-passed the Renault driver on the outside of turn two. He then took fourth off Massa during the pits before his car failed.

Petrov claimed fifth ahead of Hülkenberg – the last car not to be lapped by the flying Webber.

Jenson Button made a poor start from 11th place and fell as low as 15th. He managed to take one pace off Vitantonio Liuzzi and gained a few more places through the pit stops.

But he ended the races sandwiched between the Saubers and unable to pass Pedro de la Rosa. Kamui Kobayashi finished an impressive ninth having started on the back row.

Rubens Barrichello claimed the final point for tenth place and had to fight hard for it in a terrifyingly close encounter with Michael Schumacher – another matter the stewards are attending to.

All six of the new teams’ cars finished the race, with Heikki Kovalainen leading them in 14th behind Sebastien Buemi and Liuzzi.

Red Bull may have once again failed to convert a front row start into a one-two finish but they took enough points to claim the lead of the constructors’ championship and put Webber back ahead in the drivers’ title race. Food for thought for their rivals as they head into the summer break.
