F1 Fanatic reviews the official 2011 F1 season video, available for the first time in high definition.

2011 F1 season review - He's done it again

The official F1 season review is available in high definition for the first time.

But is it good enough to persuade you to part with your hard-earned pennies?

The review itself gets off to a rather plodding start with a few dreary interviews. But with 19 races to pack in it speeds along.

So much so that the a proper introduction to the season – recapping driver moves and major technical changes – is entirely absent, which feels like a strange omission.

However there is some testing footage, including a brief glimpse of Robert Kubica in the car he sadly never got to race this year.

Race highlights

The real meat of the review is the race highlights and these are up to the usual high standard. Ben Edwards – BBC’s commentator for next season – does a first-rate job. Will Buxton supplies further background between the races.

There is no shortage of great material and a generous sprinkling of footage and team radio that hasn’t been shown before.

Monaco stands out as one of the best examples. It comes to life with plenty of interesting snippets from the drivers and the teams – particularly when the race is red-flagged, prompting some of them to wonder if the Grand Prix is over.

There is also a revealing interview with the McLaren drivers following the Spanish Grand Prix where they talk quite candidly about their debriefings and being stuck with insufficiently long gear ratios.

New footage

Among the other interesting moments revealed in more detail is the radio exchange between Mark Webber and the Red Bull pit wall in the closing stages at Silverstone – where the team told him not to race team mate Sebastian Vettel.

It begins with Vettel noticing the arrival of Webber on his tail and warning his race engineer to “be wise”. He is told, “we understand what you mean, we’re controlling the situation.”

Webber is warned first by his race engineer and then repeatedly by team principal Christian Horner to stay three seconds behind his team mate. “Maintain the gap, yeah,” acknowledges Webber, while clambering over Vettel’s rear wing.

Webber stays silent after the race while Adrian Newey tells him: “Sorry about that. We compromised Seb’s first stop to allow you the optimum stop from intermediates to slicks. I think it’s only fair that we held at the end.”

Among the previously unseen moments from the season is Felipe Massa’s collision with Jarno Trulli at Monza, for which the Ferrari driver can consider himself lucky not to have been given a penalty. A furious Trulli demanded he be handed one.

We also get more material from Suzuka, including Sergio Perez’s joke at his team’s expense and Vettel’s celebratory doughnuts after sealing his second title.

The qualifying incident between Webber, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton at Suzuka is revealingly played from the Red Bull driver’s point of view, along with his radio messages.

At Korea, a furious Helmut Marko remonstrates with Jaime Alguersuari after the Toro Rosso driver held Vettel up in practice. A clue as to why he’s lost his place at the team?

Memorable moments

Much of the most memorable footage from the season is present and correct, from Webber’s staggering pass on Alonso in Spa to Rowan Atkinson’s facial contortions as Hamilton and Massa collide yet again in India.

I’d have liked to seen more on the teams further down the grid as they tend to get overlooked in the race broadcasts to begin with.

There is a rather high level of assumed knowledge about the 2011 rules – though that’s not likely to be a problem for F1 Fanatics!

And at times it feels there is too little context to the action. The dropping of the Bahrain round, for example, is entirely ignored.

On the other hand the exhaust-blown diffuser row is covered in great detail – almost excessively so, particularly the drawn-out press conference discussion between Martin Whitmarsh and Christian Horner.

Team radio feature

The Blu-Ray edition offers an hour of extra features. Of those, one is particularly worthy of your attention.

It shows the highlights from the Chinese Grand Prix – undoubtedly one of this year’s best races – relying entirely on team radio messages to tell the story.

This is an excellent feature and should be repeated next year for all the races as an additional audio track.

You get a lot of footage and some great new material for your money. It may lack a little in sparkle, but then the season itself was not a classic contest.

Despite that it remains an essential end-of-year purchase – it’s just a pity it won’t be out in time for Christmas.

The two-disc 2010 F1 season DVD review is five hours long.

F1 2010 DVD review - Sebastian's coming of age

The annual F1 season DVD reviews are always popular purchases among F1 Fanatic readers. That’s no surprise, as it’s still the only way you can legally buy footage of F1 races.

Thankfully, the producers haven’t skimped on the material. The two-disc set packs in five hours of footage, and although it isn’t available in high definition (a laughable shortcoming in 2010) the quality of much of it is very good.

As you’d expect, coverage of all 19 races is packed in and the review is so long you have to swap discs (how retro!) halfway through.

Usual commentator Ben Edwards is joined by Will Buxton who covers the action between the races.

Despite having a huge amount of time to fit the review into the introduction to the season is rather on the thin side. There’s no run-through of the teams, even the new outfits barely get a mention. Much of the rules changes are glossed over too.

But when you get into the meat of the review – the races – all is well. Whoever tackled the mammoth task of condensing the days’ worth of footage into pithy reviews of each race has done a first-class job.

There’s ample coverage of all the major moments, often with a couple of new angles thrown in for good measure.

Qualifying and practice highlights get a mention too along with a few unseen moments – such as Robert Kubica discovering someone had left a mobile ‘phone in his car while he drives around Bahrain.

Edwards’ commentary is spot on as usual and the producers have wisely kept the footage free of music (a major irritation in previous editions).

Watching the full review end-to-end you find it starts to get a little repetitive – are all those montages reminding us of what we saw half an hour age really necessary?

And while the focus is inevitably on the five drivers who did all the winning, I’d like to have seen a bit more of the teams in the midfield and at the back of the grid.

That is partly remedied by the excellent selection of extras, which is a marked improvement on previous offerings. Instead of a single hot lap from each race we get a different selection of onboard material.

One of the best is the start of the Australian Grand Prix seen from the perspective of several different drivers, including Vitaly Petrov weaving his way past several cars and Sebastien Buemi being taken out by Kamui Kobayashi.

There are seven further features including pieces on Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber, and a particularly good one with the two McLaren drivers looking back on footage of the likes of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

It’s a shame there’s no corresponding piece on the new world champion, though.

What’s offered here is all good quality material and the package is pretty good value. The lack of an HD version is a major weakness, however – hopefully that will finally be addressed in 2011.

The 2008 F1 DVD is now available and you can read a review of it by clicking here.

The 2008 F1 season DVD will be called “Luck Does Not Come Into It”. It’s already up to 51st place in the Amazon DVD chart on pre-orders alone. The official Formula 1 review goes on sale on the first of December.

It’s certainly been a season to remember. If you’re intending to buy the DVD review you can do so via this link, from which F1 Fanatic will earn a commission (you will not be charged extra):

Buy / pre-order the 2008 F1 DVD season review

Details of the running time etc… are not available yet. I’ll review the disc as soon as I can get a copy.

For the third year in a row the disc is being published by a different studio. Duke Video issued the product until 2006 but the 2007 F1 DVD was published by Lionsgate.

The 2008 F1 DVD will be published by 2 Entertain, which is partly supported by BBC Video.

2 Entertain has produced DVDs from major British series including “The Office” and “Little Britain” (both BBC), plus “Ali G” and “Phoenix Nights”.

They look great and they’re going on my Xmas list. But are we ever going to be able to get past official F1 season reviews on DVD?

Formula One Management took until 2003 to start offering F1 season reviews on DVD. Before that there were special editions of the 2000 and 2001 seasons available on DVD, but the 2001 review was only available with the PlayStation 2 Formula 1 game.

A series of F1 DVDs covering the 1970-1980 seasons has also been released by Brunswick Films. This period was before FOM’s monopoly of Grand Prix video coverage.

But the 1981-1999 and 2002 F1 seasons can only be bought on video tape. And many of those are very hard to track down.

So why hasn’t FOM got around to offering those seasons on DVD? You’d think it would be easy money for them.

They should re-master the coverage and offer both the original commentaries and updated versions available as different audio tracks. (The original commentaries on these videos vary between the excellent – Clive James, 1982, 1984 and 1986 – and the painfully bad – Brian Kriesky, 1983.)

And what about emerging alternatives such as Blu-Ray (which appears to have buried HD-DVD)? Or web downloads?

It’s the usual story of Bernie Ecclestone’s FOM being utterly hopeless at promoting F1 and taking advantage of new (or, in this case, old) technologies.

Do you want to see the official F1 season reviews available on DVD? What other formats should F1 season reviews be available in?

Read reviews of all the past official F1 season videos and DVDs: Official F1 Season Reviews

The cost of buying and broadcasting Formula 1 footage is so extortionately expensive that even major television news channels will only show the briefest glimpses of race action.

The end-of-season video reviews remain the only official way to watch the highlights of a previous year.

So how good a job have they done of re-telling the high drama of the 2007 season, and the battle to the end between Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton?

The official F1 season review runs to three hours and 20 minutes, and has half a dozen extra features including pieces on Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen.

Previously the reviews have been distribute by Duke Video but this year FOM has switched to Lionsgate. It’s not obvious why – whenever I’ve bought videos from Duke in the past I’ve found their service to be excellent.

What they should have changed is who actually edits the material together, because once again they’ve done a sub-par job.

As ever, this is especially galling because FOM have a monopoly on the right to produce F1 video. They have access to all the extra footage that doesn’t get shown on the conventional television broadcast (such as the onboard shot of Fernando Alonso’s crash at Fuji Speedway which you can watch here).

There’s nothing wrong with the footage itself – in fact it’s excellent. The problem is how it is put together.

The loud and intrusive music is very distracting. It seems to have no relevance to the action and starts and stops for no obvious reason. It’s as if they’ve let a toddler play with the sound deck. It drowns out the cars and as there’s only one audio track you can’t turn it off.

The commentary is delivered by Ben Edwards (who is a fine commentator) but as usual they have him pretending he’s commenting on the action live. This leads to various awkward grammatical contortions and some painfully embarrassing moments – especially when he’s pretending the drama of Robert Kubica’s crash is unfolding for the first time right in front of him.

These silly mistakes are repeated every year and are so off-putting I invariably watch the new season reviews once before chucking them on the pile and never bother to watch them again. Whereas I’ve played the better videos from the 1980s and 1990s so many times some of them have worn out.

It’s a shame because as a review of the season the footage is balanced, thorough and entertaining. The action gets replayed from every conceivable angle and the developments at the rear of the field are covered as well as the race at the front.

Of course 2007 was all about controversy and the programme makers have done a good job of handling the various incidents as even-handedly as possible. Although I felt the tension between Alonso and McLaren was downplayed a bit.

There were a couple of other disappointing omissions, like Anthony Davidson’s qualifying lap at Istanbul, and Heikki Kovalainen’s exceptional drive at Montreal, which largely get ignored. Much of the exciting Nico Rosberg-Jenson Button battle at Monza is also cut and the off-season is largely ignored.

Otherwise it’s the same old story. The season review is only going to be as good as the season was, in which case we’re talking about a handful of good races and a few really wretched ones (which, happily, get far less coverage).

The vast potential for this kind of product remains completely untapped. Where’s the multi-disc box set collectors’ edition for the hardcore fan? Why is there absolutely no supporting material in the box?

And above all, where’s the off button for that wretched music?

Over the next five days I’ll be picking out some of the best F1 videos, books, toys, collectibles and more to give you some great gift ideas – starting off with the best in F1 video.

Kimi Made It At Last: Official 2007 F1 season review DVD

The official F1 season review DVDs are the only official video accounts of each season, and as a result are highly collectible. The 2007 DVD will include all the highlights from a dramatic season that saw Kimi Raikkonen’s first world championship and a stunning début performance from Lewis Hamilton. It is due out on December 10th.

Classic F1 season reviews

The official F1 reviews collection stretches back to 1981, but only the years from 2003 and onwards are available on DVD. But you can pick up copies of the video tapes at bargain prices and a few of them are definitely worth hunting down:

Michael & Co. – The Dream Team (2003) (DVD)

Michael Schumacher wins his sixth world championship title in a year that featured some memorable races, particularly at Melbourne, Interlagos, Nürburgring and Silverstone. Read the full review…

Alain Prost won his final world championship for Williams-Renault. But Ayrton Senna, in his final full season of Grand Prix racing, often stole the show with some excellent wins for McLaren-Ford, including his celebrated triumph at Donington Park. Read the full review…

Another of the classic Senna vs Prost years. This was when the rivalry between the two really turned nasty, with Prost hitting his team mate in the penultimate race to claim a controversial crown. Read the full review…

We saw a three-way fight for the title this year – 1986 was the last time that happened. Nigel Mansell lost the title at the final round when his tyre burst dramatically. It capped a year of exciting racing from the time when turbo power was at its peak. Read the full review…

A tragic a controversial year for the sport, brilliantly told by Clive James in this excellent film. Probably the best of the F1 season videos. Read the full review…

1970 F1 seasons box set

If you’re looking for a great present for a fan of earlier F1 seasons, this ten-disc set covering the 1970-1979 championships is an excellent idea. The vivid colour footage is brilliantly narrated.

Life in the Fast Lane

I’ve not had a review copy of this DVD but I’ve not heard anything good about it. I’d be amazed if it has any actual race footage. (If you’re festive shopping for a Hamilton fan you’ll find plenty of alternatives later in this series).

Grand Prix (2 Disc Special Edition)

You can’t beat John Frankenheimer’s classic “Grand Prix”. Yes, it’s hardly a cinematic tour de force, the plot is barely existent and the dialogue is awful. But the lingering shots of stacks of gorgeous sixties F1 racers plus cameos from the like of Graham Hill make this essential viewing for F1 fans – and it’s family-friendly too.

But many of the recent official season reviews of late have been more ‘miss’ than ‘hit’. Does the 2006 review do justice to a complex and controversial season?

Since 2003 every F1 season review has been available on DVD and, year by year, better use is being made of the format.

But while the reviews have become better technically – with more footage, extra clips and so on – the fundamentals are still not right.

That much is clear from the box. What the hell kind of title is “Once again”? It screams, “Nothing exciting happened, just the same as last year.” Which is manifestly untrue.

While we’re on criticisms, let’s rattle off some of the usual mistakes that never get fixed. Cheesy music ruins much of the in-race coverage, and many of the political and technical developments during the year are ignored.

Ben Edwards is a fine commentator, but the script is rubbish.

There are plenty of features besides the racing but most of them would be better as ‘extras’ kept out of the flow of the review. Some, particularly the piece on Honda pit stops and the interview with Chris Dyer (Michael Schumacher’s race engineer) are not especially interesting.

OK so what do they do well? They definitely get a thumbs-up for covering a very controversial season in as even-handed a way as possible.

The footage as ever is brilliant and includes all the angles and on-board cameras that most TV broadcasts don’t or can’t have access to.

For example, ITV viewers never got to see the contact between Michael Schumacher and Nick Heidfeld at the Hungaroring – but it’s here on the DVD. There’s also plenty of team radio. But oddly, the audio track is clearly out of sequence with the images on several on-board shots.

It’s a decent review but it still falls far short of what they could achieve with the material they’ve got. Once again.

Best bit: The awesome on-board footage of Fernando Alonso’s exceptional first lap at Hungary.

So what makes a good review? Ben has a few ideas – not least of which putting out two reviews for each season. Read on to find out why…

As we enter the Christmas season F1 fans have little to celebrate: The odd test session, driver move rumours, but no action.

In these bleak times when there’s no racing to watch (except A1GP, but that’s usually on long before I’m awake), many of us turn to our video collections to ward off impending social engagements, or interminable Morecambe and Wise repeats.

Certainly this is the path that I’ve trodden in recent weeks, and you know what, most of my F1 videos are actually a bit rubbish.

The end of season review has long been a ‘must buy’ for your average anorak, and why not: A 90-minute to 3-hour film that encapsulates all the season’s action into one sitting (except for 2002 as that season’s highlights barely run to 5 minutes).

Yet many of them leave both the casual follow and the hardcore fan feeling ever so slightly disappointed.

I can’t speak for the Brunswick Films 1970′s reviews as I haven’t seen them, but the feedback I’ve had has been mixed.

But of the official FOCA tapes issued since 1981, I would say that there are 4 only really good ones that are worth returning to again and again.

These are the three Clive James tapes from 1982 (not for kids), 1984 (funny narration, dull season), 1986 (if you only ever buy one F1 video, this should be it) and the 1993 review narrated by Jonathan Ross, which is about the only review which captures all the action and keeps the viewer entertained.

As for the others, well they’re a mixed bag.

The 1980s tapes are of variable quality, 1981 is dull, 1983 has narration even worse than a James Allen commentary (yes that bad), 1985 is narrated by the drivers which makes for an interesting curio but crap review, 1987 suffers from the Simon Taylor effect (as 1981). 1988 and 1989 are worth hunting down, though.

The same goes for 1990 and 1991. 1992 is a Mansell eulogy, and 1994 was overshadowed by Imola. I have a soft spot for 1995 which covers the Hill vs Schumacher battles well andalso features Taki Inoue’s greatest hits.

The remainder of the 1990s reviews feature some great scene setting shots and pitstop coverage but little else. Note to producers (and Bernie for that matter) – if the public found tyre changes exciting there would be rabid hordes outside Kwikfit daily. That there aren’t suggests the on-track action is what holds the appeal.

Into the ’00s and well, frankly, there hasn’t been a good review yet, they’ve all been overlong, overearnest and mainly set in the present tense.

Furthermore as the running length has increased, so have the number of build-up shots, and whilst Bono at Monaco is mildly diverting (if only in the hope somebody would run him over), Magny-Cours is not – there are only so many shots of rustic fields you can stomach (clue – its less than one).

So I’ve had my moan, but what does the perfect season review look like? Well firstly there would be two (as Duke traditionally issued for the Isle of Man TT).

One would be 90 minutes or so long, and would be narrated by either Clive James, Jack Dee or Jimmy Carr and would condense all the action into bitesize chunks whilst ripping into Kimi Raikkonen’s monotone and Vitantonio Liuzzi’s hairstyles. This would appeal to the fair-weather and casual fan who wants to watch some F1 to be entertained, not to have a technical lecture on tyre compounds.

The second would be for the hardcore fan, ideally narrated by Martin Haven and David Addison (easily the two best UK racing commentators), and would span over two disks with copious race coverage (at least 15 minutes of action from each race). It would also come loaded with extras (such as a driver’s viewpoint from Anthony Davidson), and lots of short clips to save you rummaging through the disk – such as all the crashes/amusing moments of the year collected into a 10 minute montage.

It would also have a multi angle option on all the key incidents – do you want to go onboard, helicopter, or trackside (this is available on Moto GP reviews)? Put simply it should be a feast for the F1 fanatic and provide the most comprehensive, yet entertaining review of the season.

So come on FOCA, please provide the fans and the sport with season reviews it deserves, that will effectively document F1 for fans of the future to watch as they come into the sport, whilst giving the current fans something to whet their appetite with over the long, warm winter.

Oh, and while you’re at it, how about re-releasing the 1980s and 1990s reviews on DVD? But do sort out that ’83 review commentary…

2005 gave us some good action: that unforgettable race in Suzuka, genuine overtaking at Monaco and plenty of incident.

The Formula 1 season review DVDs are in desperate need of some development.

The fundamental components have gone unchanged for several years: Ben Edwards is a fine commentator, but he is apparently required to talk as if the race is happening live which sounds ridiculous several months on, not to mention a couple of years later.

As usual, the best bits of action are mingled with a backing music track, which sounds desperately naff.

Worse, despite being 3hrs 40mins long some incidents are completely overlooked, including Nick Heidfeld re-passing Ralf Schumacher at Malaysia and the whole Fernando Alonso / Christian Klien mix-up in Suzuka that arguably cost Alonso a win.

There’s no shortage of shots of irrelevant celebrities though. Joy.

At least 2005 gave us some good action: that unforgettable race in Suzuka, genuine overtaking at Monaco and plenty of incident.

Important incidents from practice and qualifying are covered, and if you have a hunt around you can find onboard laps of each track, but little real effort is made to exploit DVD technology allowing multiple angles of the major action to be replayed. Nor are alternative commentaries offered (could we please have one without the music?)

This is an adequate review, but it really doesn’t push the boundaries at all. From a sport at the cutting edge of technology you expect more than this decidedly average DVD.

Best bit: You can watch the Michael Schumacher-Fernado Alonso battle at Imola uninterrupted by ITV’s adverts.
