Mark Webber says the teams expect few surprises from the changed tyre compounds in 2012.

Speaking following the launch of the Red Bull RB8, Webber said: “They’ve changed the tyres a little bit this year but I think it’s pretty much old news.

“The tyres have been around for a while now, the teams get on top of that stuff reasonably quickly, and the drivers. I’m talking in the space of a few months to half a year which is pretty quick. The teams know what we’re in for this year and we can get stuck into the races.”

Webber echoed team mate Sebastian Vettel’s view that the changes to the exhaust-blown diffuser rules will have a significant effect on the cars:

“The characteristics of the RB8, we’re looking for a car that’s very drive-able, which means not only from an engine side – Renault do a good job there – but also aerodynamically, we need to have a car that’s functional on all circuits in all temperatures.

“Clearly we need to get the most out of the tyres which was a huge thing last year for everybody. That’s pretty much done now, everyone knows how the tyres behave, that’s old news, we need to move on and develop the car as best we can.

“Without the exhaust effect into the blown diffuser, which was a very powerful thing the teams had last year, this year that’s changed, so that’s going to be a key area trying to understand the losses we’ve had there.”

He added that continuity was a key reason for the team’s strong performance in recent years:

“The success of the team in the last few years has been exceptional. So every time we launch a new car there is a lot of anticipation and excitement.

“But some nerves and also some expectations: the bar is very high, we have cleaned up in the last few years, the constructors’ championship was very dominant. So both drivers have been performing towards the front and the team has been very reliable.

“We know that we have to keep working very hard and continuity has been a key factor in that. All of our partners have been great for us. There’s no reason in 2012 we can’t be challenging for top results again.”

Sebastian Vettel says he expects a “very tight” battle in 2012, unlike his dominant championship victory last year.

Speaking following the launch of the Red Bull RB8 he said: “It would be wrong to go into this season and expect 2011 to happen again. As in, getting into the lead early and having a big gap to the competitors in the championship.

“I think it will be very, very tight this year, and everything else will be a surprise to be honest.”

Vettel said the lack of room for innovation will level the playing field:

“Looking at the cars, there is not much room we have left to play for designers to find something extra. The last two years we had two big things taken away: the double-diffusers plus, for this year, the system around the blown exhaust.

“We’re missing that, so therefore I think it’s difficult to create a difference. We’ll see, obviously we hope that our car is better than all the others. But it will be difficult and I think the cars will be fairly similar, as in, I think the gaps will be even closer than they have been.”

Asked about Bernie Ecclestone’s remarks that it would be good if Vettel didn’t dominate in 2012, the world champion said: “I hope he’s wrong, obviously!

“It’s difficult to say, every season we start from zero again.

“Everyone has the same chance. We are all building our new cars and until we put them on the track to race each other we don’t really know, so we’ll see.

“I’m as confident as I can be at this point and hopefully we’ll have a good couple of days testing to prepare the season well.”

Vettel also said he hadn’t come up with a pet name for his new car yet: “To be honest last year we found a name for the car I think Wedneday before the first race. We might be a bit earlier this year but so far no names. We have a couple of candidates, top candidates, but nothing is decided yet.”

The Red Bull RB8, the car the team aim to defend their championship titles with, was revealed today in Jerez.

Its predecessors the RB7 and RB6 won two constructors’ championships and took Sebastian Vettel to a pair of drivers’ titles. Red Bull will be hoping the RB8 can make it three in a row.

There is little change at the team which has been the dominant force in F1 for the last two-and-a-half years. Vettel and Mark Webber form the driving line-up, and Adrian Newey remains at the head of the technical team.

Red Bull RB7 launch, Valencia, 2011

Red Bull will reveal the car they hope to defend their back-to-back world championships with on February 6th.

The RB8 will be revealed online at 1pm on the day before testing begins.

Sauber have already confirmed their car launch on the same day. McLaren and Ferrari will launch their 2012 contenders earlier in February.

Buemi lost his Toro Rosso seat at the end of 2011

Red Bull have announced Sebastien Buemi will be their reserve driver for 2012.

Buemi drove for Toro Rosso from 2009 to 2011, but was dropped at the end of last season.

Buemi said: “It’s good to remain with Red Bull for another year and have this opportunity with the World Championship winning team.

“I would prefer to be driving at the races of course, but working with Red Bull Racing on the development of their car and providing them with feedback throughout the season is the next best thing.”

Christian Horner added: “It was entirely logical for Sebastien to continue with Red Bull having been a member of the Junior Team since 2004.

“He already knows the team well from his time with us in 2008 and has gained significant race experience over the past three years. He will complete important test and simulation work for us throughout the year and will be in attendance at each grand prix.”

Update: Toro Rosso have confirmed Buemi will also be their reserve driver.

Vettel won 11 out of 19 races, the last coming in India

Red Bull dominated the 2011 season in a manner not seen since the days of Michael Schumacher at Ferrari.

Sebastian Vettel broke records as the wins and pole positions piled up.

The RB7 differed from its rivals in several key areas and these innovations added up to give Red Bull a decisive edge.

It made superior use of exhaust gases to generate downforce in its diffuser. This, allied to a more raked profile allowing its front wing to move closer to the ground under pressure, made for a formidably fast machine.

Speculation surrounded other tricks Red Bull might be using to gain an edge on their rival, such as the use of pre-heated components to increase tyre temperatures to higher levels than those attained by their rivals, particularly at the start of races.

They were even rumoured to be using exhaust gasses to heat the tyres at the start of races, which was linked to Vettel’s first-lap tyre failure at Abu Dhabi.

Adrian Newey’s reluctance to compromise chassis dimensions led to the team using a smaller and less powerful Kinetic Energy Recovery System than their rivals. While this gave them some problems, particularly early in the season, no-one would claim the RB7 was deficient because of it.

The result was a car optimised to qualifying at and leading from the front. In Vettel, the team had the perfect driver to pilot such a creation.

He enjoyed a near-monopoly on pole position, starting from the front 15 times, a new record. From there he regularly scampered off into a large lead on the first lap, keeping him safe from DRS-armed pursuers.

This generally freed Vettel from the demands of racing in traffic, which had been a weakness of his previously. But that seemed to be a thing of the past in 2011, as he pulled off high-speed, high-risk passes on Nico Rosberg at Spa and Fernando Alonso at Monza to name two.

More often Vettel was the one receiving pressure rather than applying it and he handled it brilliantly at Spain and Monaco. This served to highlight the fact that, once again, Red Bull’s performance advantage over a single lap was far greater than it was over a stint.

In Spain the Red Bulls were almost a second quicker than their closest rivals in qualifying, yet Vettel ended the race with Hamilton climbing all over the back of his RB7.

Vettel withstood Hamilton’s onslaught but Canada was a different matter. Preoccupied with keeping a one-second lead over Jenson Button at the DRS zone on the final lap, Vettel slipped up, and Button was through.

After another win in the following race at Valencia Vettel had a remarkable six wins and two second places from eight races. He had an off-colour race at home, spinning and finishing fourth. But he returned from the summer break back at the peak of his form, winning the next three races from pole position to put the championship virtually beyond doubt.

Webber won the final round when Vettel's gearbox failed

In 2010, Vettel and Mark Webber traded blows throughout the season and went into the final round fighting for the championship. But in 2011 we saw a much more subdued performance from Webber – it wasn’t until the final race that Webber scored a win – and only then because of a rare glitch on Vettel’s car.

Webber was one of several drivers to have trouble adjusting to the new tyres at the beginning of the season. On top of that, his starts were a considerable weakness – he gave away a net 22 places on lap one over the course of the year (Vettel actually lost more, but the data is skewed by his puncture on lap one in Abu Dhabi).

Curiously, Webber enjoyed one of his best weekends of the year at Silverstone, when the teams had to adhere to tighter restrictions on exhaust-blown diffusers. He fought Vettel at the end despite the team’s efforts to call off the battle.

The team’s persistent search for every advantage was illustrated at Spa, where they more than any of their rivals pushed the envelope on tyre camber. Red Bull weren’t the only team to get caught out by blistering caused by running greater camber angles than those recommended by Pirelli, but they went further and suffered more, having to pit both their cars within the first five laps. It didn’t keep them from finishing one-two, though.

They backed up their car’s performance on the track by being the quickest crew in the pits. Eight times this year they performed the fastest stop of the race.

Red Bull have achieved remarkable success in a comparatively short space of time. The team has only been on the grid in its current size since 2005, yet they are now tied in seventh place with Benetton among the teams that have won the most races in F1 history.

Before the season began Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo fired a shot at his rivals, saying “when others have won 10% of what Ferrari has won, then they can also have their say.” Red Bull passed that threshold halfway through the season, and now have 27 wins and two constructors’ championships.

Adrian Newey is mining a rich seam of potential from his RB5/6/7 series and it’s hard to envisage that coming to an end any time soon. With Vettel on board until at least 2014, they have every chance of continuing their domination of Formula 1.

Vettel won his tenth race of the year in Korea

Last year Sebastian Vettel won his first world championship in spite of occasional shortcomings in his driving and the reliability of his car.

This year the pair complemented each other perfectly: fast, near-faultless and, in Vettel’s case, utterly fearless.

At one point he remarked that the performance advantage he enjoyed with the RB7 this year was not as great as he’d had with the RB6 last year. Given that he won this year’s championship by 122 points and last year’s by just four, that may seem a surprising claim.

But looking at the relative performance of the cars it does appear to have been the case, certainly in the first half of this year.

Having won as he pleased in the first two races, he lost to Hamilton in China, running a weak strategy and struggling with KERS and radio problems.

In Monaco and Spain he won after enduring massive pressure from the drivers behind him. He nearly won again in similar circumstances in Canada only to run wide on the final lap, allowing Jenson Button through to win.

Having made several more high-profile errors last year, this was about as bad as it got for Vettel in 2011 – and he still finished second. When he did crash the car it was almost always during practice – as happened in Turkey, Canada, Japan and Abu Dhabi – and it rarely hindered his performance.

In the run-up to the summer break Vettel’s win rate slowed – he won just one of the five races as McLaren and Ferrari seemed to be in the ascendancy. He never looked comfortable in his home race at the Nurburgring, where the team tried a new suspension configuration. It was the only race he finished all year outside of the top three.

He remained unhappy with the car in practice for the next race in Hungary and pressed the team to make wholesale changes overnight. These were done, and he duly put the car on pole position.

He finished the race second, and on the slowing-down lap, with the summer break ahead of him, he gave an insight into his uncompromising thirst for victory as he brushed off the consoling words of his race engineer.

“Just think how Hamilton and Webber must be feeling,” said Guillaume Rocquelin, “You finished ahead of Alonso, Hamilton and Webber today. It was a good day.”

“But I want to win,” replied Vettel.

Vettel passed Alonso to win in Monza

Vettel returned from the summer break stronger than ever. Any hopes his rivals entertained that Red Bull might struggle at the high-speed Spa and Monza tracks were dispelled as he won both from pole position.

In these races he also gave the lie to doubts about his overtaking prowess. He danced around the outside of Nico Rosberg at Blanchimont at Spa. When Alonso forced him onto the grass at the outside of Monza’s flat-out Curva Grance, Vettel didn’t flinch, took the lead and was on his way to another victory.

After that he won as he pleased in Singapore and played the percentages in Japan to seal the title with four races still to go.

This was one of the earliest ever championship conclusions, despite the changes made to the points system. He also broke the record for most pole positions in a season and won more races than anyone bar Michael Schumacher in 2004.

But if the regularity of his success became monotonous, the often slender margin between him and his rivals in qualifying showed that this wasn’t just the case of a driver enjoying a significant performance advantage in his car.

The scale of his superiority over Mark Webber, who almost ended the season winless, rammed that message home.

It was by any measure a staggering performance. Vettel was a considerable force when he won his first championship but he raised his game in almost every area in 2011. The prospect of this man driving an Adrian Newey-designed car for the foreseeable future is a grim thought for his rivals.

The finger held aloft as Vettel wins in Turkey

He won the world championship, making the best use of his machinery all season.

Sebastian showed that his racecraft has improved significantly (like passing Alonso at Curva Grande and Rosberg at Blanchimont), and he is capable of taking wins under huge pressure as well (Monaco and Spain). Asserted himself as one of the best qualifiers in the history of the sport. And still only 24.

Just in a class of his own. You only have to look at the difference between him and Webber (who is no slouch) over qualifying and the race. It proves to me that it is not just the car that is quick.

What impresses me the most about Vettel is his qualifying speed and how he just turns it on when he needs to. Also the first few laps of the race he manages to pull out a gap of over a second normally which is just crazy.

I started the year in utter contempt for Seb who I thought did not deserve to be a world champion.

But as each qualifying session went by contempt turned into disbelief and disbelief into awe as each time he pulled something out of the bag to stand on pole and on the winners spot. Seb takes first place for me.

The sheer numbers of his season could be enough to put him in the number one spot. But to me, what really made him “the” driver this year is the way he dominated Webber.

It is easy to say he was just doing his job with in the fastest car of the field, but the way his team mate looked ordinary in the same machinery tells me that Vettel really made the difference and maximized the potential of the car. His ability to learn from his mistakes is simply incredible, and he can only get better.

Best driver all year by a mile. He did it all and dispelled all the aspects of his driving that some people were suspect about.

His drive in Barcelona was absolutely top drawer, making critical overtakes after his pit stop and holding back Hamilton in a faster McLaren for several laps. Monaco was another lesson in calm driving to hold off faster cars, and his qualifying laps have been extra special. A real privilege to watch this year.

Vettel probably made the Red Bull look faster than it actually was this year. I didn’t even know that was possible!

The 15 poles and amazing composure in stressful situations has put Sebastian as a force to be reckoned with. With the exception of his last lap in Canada, and off day at the Nurburgring, Sebastian was flawless all season.

He was dominant, getting everything out of both himself and the car at almost every opportunity. Peerless in qualifying and a racecraft that has, in my opinion, become one of the top three with Alonso and Hamilton. A deserved second world championship, trouncing a tough team mate in Mark Webber to boot.

Not for the first time this year, Vettel wasn’t completely happy with his car on Friday, but was satisfied with it on Saturday and claimed his record-breaking 15th pole position of the year.

According to his team mate, there were concerns the evening before the race about Vettel’s gearbox. Webber said during the press conference: “I know how hard the guys worked on [Sebastian's] gearbox last night because it wasn’t completely smooth.”

As early as lap five Red Bull detected the gearbox was losing oil, and instructed Vettel to short-shift in second and third gears to reduce stress on it – the lower gears put the box under greatest stress.

Vettel said: “It was during the first stint, at some stage, that I got the message ‘we have a gearbox issue’. It sounded pretty strong, pretty severe, so I turned down the engine and then immediately started to short shift and it just kept getting worse.

“I got through the first pit stop and obviously gained a little bit on Mark, because I came in a lap earlier but then at some stage I realised that it was still pretty early in the race, our main priority is to finish the race and Mark would be catching up and the most important thing would be to help the team to win the race.

“I tried to be very clear on the radio that I cannot keep first position with the pace that we were going or whatever they asked me to do, what was required to manage the gearbox and then I told them ‘OK, but obviously advise Mark’ or ‘tell Mark that I would let him through’, to give him the chance to keep pushing, don’t lose any time getting past me because at that stage I didn’t know whether I would see the chequered flag or not.”

Vettel said he was glad to make it to the end of the race: “I then just kept losing more and more time towards the end, so I had to be more and more conservative. At some stage I said that ‘I feel like Senna in 1991 when he had to manage the gearbox problem around here’. Obviously it was totally different for him, he was Brazilian and he still managed to win the race.

“I was forced to push in areas where I was allowed to, in the corners, but as soon as I went on the straight, I obviously had to shift earlier. I don’t know if you have walked the track or have run the track, but getting out of the last corner is pretty steep so there was no chance to really… I tried to stay with Mark as well as I could, in case the problem solved itself and we could go again, but in the end I was just trying to keep the gap.”

He ran wide and lost time following his final pit stop: “I was a bit surprised when I got onto the [mediums] and warm-up was a bit poor and then I think I just got caught out with the traffic ahead and lost too much at the front with a little bit of warm-up.”

Following questions over whether Red Bull pretended Vettel had a problem to help Webber win the race, Red Bull showed data from the gearbox to some journalists, who were satisfied Vettel had experienced a fault.

Webber completed Red Bull’s sixth front row lockout of 2011, less than two-tenths off his team mate on one of the shortest circuits on the calendar.

Vettel scorched away to a 2.2 second lead in the first two laps, and Webber was 3.8s behind at lap ten. Webber pitted after Vettel the first time around, and Vettel’s lead peaked at 5.2s.

It then fell rapidly and by lap 28 Webber was within half a second of his team mate. Two laps later he was through into the lead.

Webber said: “I thought he was either in tyre trouble way earlier than he should be or no KERS or something was going on, because one thing [Sebastian] doesn’t do is forget how to drive from one lap to the other.

“When I started to take a pretty big chunk out of him per lap, I thought something might have been going down and then Ciaron [Pilbeam] informed me that he had a gearbox problem and I think I could smell it a little bit when I got close, and there was also a little bit of fluid.”

Webber entertained himself in the closing laps by trying to improve his fastest lap, setting the quickest tour with his last effort: “It was getting a bit frustrating because I kept pinching the front a little bit into turn eight.

“On the last lap I got it a little bit better otherwise I was probably going to bail a bit earlier, but I kept pushing pretty hard.

“Yeah, that’s what it’s about, isn’t it, pushing yourself and backing yourself and having a crack. I was only racing myself at that point so it was a nice little feeling, as I say, to have the car working well underneath me.”

He added: “I want to dedicate this win to a close friend of myself and my family, Bob Woods, who’s a very ill man at the moment, so this win is for him.”
