How to get started on Twitter

You can get your free Twitter account at www.twitter.com. You can then follow the growing number of F1 drivers, teams and other personalities on Twitter.

If you’ve found a real F1 or other motor racing person or team on Twitter, please post details in the comments and I’ll add them to the list.

Are they real?

There are many fake F1 Twitter accounts. The ones that admit they are fakers are easy to spot and often very entertaining (like fakemarkwebber and fakemaxmosley).

But there are also some people pretending to run official accounts for drivers or teams. Here is a list of several prominent false accounts identified in early 2012.

If you’ve found a real F1 or other motor racing person or team on Twitter, please post details in the comments and I’ll add them to the list.

  1. Anyone know if @NandoAlonso is fake?

    • Ubaid Parkar said on 14th September 2009, 6:41

Seems fake! He does not interact with the the verified Nelson Piquet twitter account but rather nelsonpiquetjr2, he also prefers Sebas_Vettel (who is making sweeping statements against Briatore And Symonds) It is a fake!

    • Kico said on 13th March 2010, 10:50

      Yes. It’s fake.

  2. Also our GP2 team: http://twitter.com/oceanracingtech

The tweets are in portuguese though.

  3. @nicorosberg is also on Twitter. I think that is him and it is interesting to follow him as his nutritionist (Robin Lindsay – @robinlinds ) is posting updates on his account during races – mainly what she hears on team radio…

  4. Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine) said on 17th September 2009, 11:41

It looks like Ted Kravitz has joined now too, but no official confirmation yet:

    New F1 driver added

Nico Rosberg is now on the list:

    http://twitter.com/NicoRosberg16

The account appears to have been started for the purposes of running a competition, but hopefully we’ll start to see some proper Tweets from Rosberg himself too.

    • Jacob Molenkamp said on 10th October 2009, 9:30

I follow that NicoRosberg16 as well but thought this is done by Philips Brasil for the upcoming GP only.

      Further I follow http://twitter.com/Mansell5

which I did not see in your directory.

      • Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine) said on 10th October 2009, 13:34

They’ve done a few non-competition related Tweets, let’s see if they do any proper Twitter stuff once the content is over.

I’ve had a look at the Mansell one before but I haven’t seen any indication it’s genuine. Have you?

        • Jacob Molenkamp said on 10th October 2009, 13:47

I don’t know either if the Mansell one is genuine, their haven’t been any tweets since August but it has a lot of followers

  6. What about @Kimi_Raikkonen (http://twitter.com/Kimi_Raikkonen)? Is it real? He’s got 12,166 subscribers including Nico Rosberg.

  7. Bullfrog said on 10th October 2009, 21:22

Twitter is ideal for Mansell and Raikkonen – at least you don’t have to listen to them…

Usually worth a listen, in my opinion, is@MauriceHamilton – have you come across him yet?

  8. Hi there,

just to say that the Ivan Capelli you placed isn’t the real one. It’s actually a Brazilian journalist, ho happens to have the same name…

    Quite a coincidence, hen?

    Hi Keith,

    Some suspects to check:

    Jacque Villeneuve: @27villeneuve
    Robert Kubica: @fakeRobKubica

    Martin Brundle: @fakeMartinB (funny!)
    Eddie Jordan: @fakeEJ
    David Coulthard: @fakeDC
    Flavio: @fakeflav

    Funny, but I think fake:
    @FakeAlonso
    @fakeschumacher

    Cheers from Holland,
    Jeroen
