At the start of 1992 the world’s press were rapt with the anticipation of a woman once again taking to the Formula One grid. They’re still waiting.
Although Amati attempted to qualify the Brabham on several occasions, the Italian never looked destined for a race start. Partly she was out of her depth in Formula One on every count bar her chequebook, but also because the Brabham, in the team’s final season, was so painfully slow. She was replaced by Damon Hill and Amati moved on to the more sedate world of Sports cars where she has been competitive but rarely a frontrunner.
