Brabham BT53 (1984) pictures

Brabham won twice with the BT53 in 1984, Nelson Piquet triumphing at Montreal and Detroit.

Very quick over a flying lap, the car scored nine pole positions. But unreliability, particularly with the BMW turbo engine, kept the team from challenging for the championship.

If the BMW M12 or the turbo’s had been more reliable Piquet could have given a much bigger challenge to the McLaren’s of Lauda and Prost, though its debatable as to whether the BMW had the fuel economy of the TAG engine given that was the first year of cars being only allowed 222 litres per race.

    But as Clive James said in the 1984 season review video…..”Anything as fast as the McLaren’s fell apart. Anything as reliable finished later”.
