1. Kubica (I rated his season above Alonso's for its consistency, although I'd still rate Alonso slightly ahead as a driver)
2. Alonso
3. Hamilton
4. Massa
5. Vettel
6. Heidfeld (Heidfeld and Raikkonen had similar problems but Nick seemed a little steadier)
7. Raikkonen
8. Trulli
9. Webber
10. Glock

A bit of a gap

11. Bourdais
12. Kovalainen
13. Rosberg
14. Barrichello
15. Piquet (too harshly criticised. In a tricky car against an inspired Alonso)
16. Nakajima
17. Button
18. Fisichella
19. Sutil
20. Coulthard

In my mind , definitely Massa was the best driver overall in 2008. I reach the conclusion by adding 20 points for his Hungary and Singapore mishaps (no fault of his) , less 2 for China when he was gifted second place , and even less 2 for Spa (giving Hamilton the benefit of the doubt on that) , would give him 14 extra points. Hamilton would get additional 5 for Spa. Then I would rate Alonso as 3rd , Kubica 4th , Vettel 5th , Raikkonen 6th , Heidfeld 7th and Webber 8th.

I was gutted for Bourdais as well. But when I took a look at the laptimes after the race Bourdais lost 43 seconds to Vettel during the race. Some of that would have been spray and field spread, but I doubt he would have been quick enough for second. Here's the data:

Could Sebastien Bourdais have beaten Sebastian Vettel in the Italian GP?

It wasn't the worst moment but another bad one - Bourdais stalling on the grid at Monza, ruining a possible 1-2 for Toro Rosso. Mind you, that would have been too much to take after seeing Vettel win. That kind of summed up his whole season though.

Some thoughts from my mental highlight reel:

1. Ferrari’s poor start at Melbourne. befuddling
2. Lewis on 3-stopper at Turkey. heh, heh, that wuz fun, let's do it again, let's do it again!
3. Heikki buried in tyre wall at Catalunya. scary few minutes
4. Kimi upending Sutil @ Monaco. ugh!
5. Lewis upending Kimi in pits at Montreal & Kimi pointing at the lights (wonder what choice words were exchanged?)
6. No penalty / black flag for Raikkonen at Magny Cours with exhaust parts flying off car at 150mph... yeah safety, of course... this was outrageous!
7. Lewis +68secs at Silverstone, Massa spinning 5 times
8. McLaren leaving Lewis out after safety car & open pits at Hockenheim (dumb), Lewis pulling off passes in closing laps (brilliant)
9. Massa -3 laps + blown engine at Hungary. ugh!
10. Valencia zzzzzzzzzzz...
11. Last laps of Spa (btw... the finale notwithstanding, easily the best last laps of a race for me in eons!!), stewards decision (thumbs down)
12. Qualis at Monza! wets/inters??, Seb V!! Seb B stalling on grid (ugh!)
13. Felipe's pitstop at Singapore. ugh!
14. Stewards decision in Japan (boooo, booooo! stay the hell away from the sport, fer cryin out loud!)
15. Felipe "diving down the inside of Kimi and outbraking him in the hairpin" at the Chinese GP... ;-) wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more.
16. Final laps at Interlagos, Timo on drys, Ferrari celebrating Massa over line, Lewis snatching it at last corner. Yowza! Thawt I wuz goin to have a heart attack!

What? Too much??
:-)
great season!! thx for giving me an outlet Keith!
Thought I was not going to be back after stewards decision at Spa, but couldn’t resist!

Thought crossed my mind if it would be possible for F1 (and if a similar thing has ever been considered) to have a "sprint" race either Saturday afternoon (after qualifying) or Sunday ahead of the main race . But instead of the main race drivers , they could either use test drivers or junior drivers who are trying to break into F1 . The engines could be the ones that they use for Friday practice (maybe some extra "blow-ups" creating some more excitement?)and the points scored could count towards the constructors championship. That may also allow a few "new" teams hoping to get into F1 in the future , to participate and possibly attract sponshorships for the future. I know there are GP2 races ahead of F1 , but I think above would give spectators a lot more - and with the teams already there with all the equipment , maybe not a big logistical problem. Not to mention the data they could accumulate , possibly better than from tests ?

Hi everyone. I'm new here and really hoping you guys can help.
I'm in my third year of my graphic design degree. I'm just starting a project where I'm looking into a how a formula one team works. The reasoning for this is that Lewis Hamilton's success and the plethora of awesome new driver's are bringing a lot of new fans to the sport and I want to explain to them the huge team effort that gets a formula one team through a season, more specifically the 2008 season. I'm quite interested in information design (look it up on wikipedia if you're inclined) which in short is the visualisation and envisionment of information and data and this is how I intend to conduct this project. I've found a lot of info about driver's, circuits and the 2008 races but I am having a bit of trouble finding out about the intricacy's of the teams more in depth than this. I want to create something really detailed showing aspects of team activities such team organisation, man power, car design development (and who does this), pre-season testing etc right up until crossing the finishing line in Brazil.

If any one has any ideas as to how to find this information, can put me in touch with someone who will know or is just interested I'd love to hear from you. I am in the process of approaching all the teams directly but hopefully in the mean time you guys can help.

I'm sure you'll all find the end result quite intersting/fasinating (I know I can't wait to see it) and there may well be the possibility of printing these out to sell at the end. Either way I'll post the end result up here when I'm done in January if anyone expresses interest. Sorry about the length of this. Thanks very much.

Fave moments
- Lewis extending his lead in Monaco making sure he can get a clear pitstop
- Lewis clawing back positions after a faulty strategy deciscion lets him stay out during a safety car period at Hockenheim
- Lewis and Raikkonen battling it out on Spa (over about a whole lap untill Raikkonen crashes)
- Last few laps at Interlagos. Drama at it's best.

Worst moments
- Stewards deciscions
- Pitlane incidents of Hamilton at Canada and Massa at Singapore
- Lots of crashes involving Coulthard. I don't remember him being involved much in crashes in previous seasons, but this season it seemed like he had a bullseye painted on the rear or side of his car.

Here's how the table would look if qualifying performance were translated into points (points gained or lost in races):

1) Lewis Hamilton 129 (-31)
2) Felipe Massa 125 (-28)
3) Kimi Raikkonen 102 (-27)
4) Heikki Kovalainen 97 (-44)
5) Robert Kubica 66 (+9)
6) Fernando Alonso 48 (+13)
7) Jarno Trulli 35 (-4)
8) Mark Webber 28 (-7)
9) Nick Heidfeld 25 (+35)
10) Sebastien Vettel 19 (+16)
11) Nico Rosberg 14 (+3)
12) Timo Glock 6 (+19)
13) Sebastien Bourdais 5 (-1)
14) Nelson Piquet 2 (+17)

These stats are quite crude (obviously disadvantage the drivers of the best cars) but they are quite useful.

One of the most direct ways the global financial crisis could affect Formula 1 is through sponsorship. Major blue chip sponsors pump an estimated £300m into F1 teams every year. And some of them - like financial institutions - are especially vulnerable to the economic crisis.

Here's a list of some of the major sponsors of each team. Which of these will be most affected by the economic trauma?

I've written a post looking at some of them here:

Take a look at Media Temple's Grid-Service plan.

I know quite a few high-profile sites which are hosted on their servers and they all seem mighty pleased with MT. I've been with them for almost an year now (after some not-so-nice experiences with other hosts) and can resonate that experience.

Having spent a lot of time optimising and refining the database and code F1 Fanatic runs on, I'm become increasingly convinced that the cause of the periodic outages we're experiencing are the fault of the hosting company (1&1). I've heard bad things from other people with experience of them as well.

Can anyone recommend a good alternative hosting company that can host a Wordpress installation that I could migrate to over the off-season?

I don't know if they do this with all of them but there used to be an F1 store where I went to Uni & they used to have lots of wheels & tyres that were certified from the teams to have been taken off a certain drivers car from a specified race.

Some were sold how they look when they come off at a pit stop, others had been made into furniture, mainly coffee tables.

They also used to have some official pit boots & team trainers that had soles made out of recycled F1 tyres, the Ferrari ones (by Puma) made a big deal about it on their display.

I think the money that can be made out of official merchandise, especially if it is certified by the teams, far outstrips any value the tyres would have as a recyclable material.

From memory a wheel & tyre was priced at over £2,000 & it was a lot more if it was a champions or from an important race. The Ferrari trainers were about £95 a pair and that was in the late 90's so I guess that'd be a lot higher now.

I remember reading somewhere that McLaren were working on 2 different cars, one with kers, one without as the feeling was that the extra mass would be unwarranted and the gains in power not gainful enough to render kers not useful at some circuits- possibly Monaco,Valencia, Hungary?

I think with a freeze on engine development, kers could be quite decisive.

It would be a shame, if as Keith pointed out in his 10 points for 2009, Ferrari don't have a working kers system at the begining of the season. It would be good to see Fellipe and Lewis go toe-to-toe again, but I'm sure if Renault can keep their momentum up Fernando will be fast.

I believe kers will create a bigger difference than the slicks, as the tyres will be common to all.

Still, can't wait

Hey, pwildthing, yes , they put green stripes on the tyres cause there so green, but I bet nobody who worked there actually thought about doing something green.

Thought I'd throw in my $0.02. I'm a newbie to F1 - started following since Spa and totally addicted now, so I can only comment on the season since then.

Fave Moments
- Hamilton's overtaking move on Raikkonen after missing the chicane. His reaction to Raikkonen's defensive move was stunning.
- Massa's pitstop in Singapore. I'm not trying to be a Ferrari-hater, but it was quite amusing watching the hose dragged down the pit and the crew hurdling to get to the car. Had to debate whether that was a fave or painful moment.
- Massa's win at Interlagos. Under all that pressure, he did what he needed to do and decimated the competition from qualifying to finish line. Total composure.

Painful Moments
- Coulthard DNF at Interlagos. Sad to see such a respectable driver end his last race like that.
- Penalties assessed by stewards. Honestly, those penalties were putting me off F1. Some reason the Bourdais penalty in Japan irked me the most.
- Alonso saying he would help Massa win. To me that is total unsportsmanlike conduct. It's one thing to be like Vettel and Glock who were driving their best and almost ruined Hamilton. But to premeditatively attack another driver loses my respect.

By the way, love the site! Keep up the good work...I'll need the site to satisfy my newfound F1 fix during the off season!

Hi Keith,

Thanks for your efforts however it wasn't an intro. It was mid way through the hour long build up to the start of the qualifying. It was a video of who won which races and how the drivers points built up over the season. I'm thinking it's part of a movie soundtrack...lots of strings.

I would've though ITV would have a page acknowledging all the artists they used in making their shows, really is quite frustrating.

Thanks again.
