Quali – 1st
Was a good lap.. perhaps time to find here and there but was good enough for pole.
Race – 2nd
I honestly think the race was sort of lost in the first corner. I had a shocking start, and Jamie swept around the outside into turn 1. I was then close to Jamie for the first few laps, at one point attempting a move at the hairpin, but I couldn’t make it stick.
I wanted to copy Jamie’s strategy, and I thought I saw him dive into the pits on lap 10 or so, but he didn’t and I pitted for primes. He was on a one stop strategy and I was on two. Right there and then I felt as though pitting was the wrong decision. And I guess I was right.
I had a really good stint on the prime tyre, and kept the gap to Jamie at 2 seconds for a long time. I then pitted for options, my final stop. Jamie was on primes and I was on fresh options. He was 10 seconds ahead.
I pushed like crazy and eventually caught up to him with about 5 laps to go. This was mega intense, and I tried to overtake a number of times but alas, couldn’t make it stick. Then on the last lap, I had DRS and Jamie took a defensive line into the final chicane. Instead of trying to hang in there and go side by side into the chicane, I braked slightly earlier than usual to try and get the cutback. I misjudged how slow he was midway through the corner and hit the back of him, spinning him into the wall. I waited of course, and Jamie took the win.
If I was first after turn one on the first lap, I would have copied Jamie’s strategy and it would have been much easier. But my starts are always terrible and it cost me today.
That was a proper race though.. kept me on edge through the full 35 laps. Great stuff. Thanks Jamie, and sorry for the final corner again. I still haven’t won since my comeback, but if I have races like today and in Japan, I really couldn’t care :D
