I know that this section of the subforum is for Formula 1 games, but Codemasters’ latest offering, DIRT 3, is coming out in about six weeks and I know there’s a WRC fanbase here. Plus, the Ego Engine used in the game is updated from DIRT 2, and it’s likely the tweaked engine will be carried across to F1 2011. I’m really quite excited about it, but hoping my laptop has the required specs to run it. I only got it about two weeks ago, but Codies tend to push systems to the limit. The system requirements haven’t been released yet, but I’ve seen a list of “projected” reqirements and my computer is already well behind them (and my computer was rated as one of the best high-performance, low-cost laptops on the market).

Here’s a few gameplay videos to whet your appetite:

    Michigan – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpMGquTery0

    Kenya – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM7CaDIaj70&feature=relmfu

    Norway – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUSgaX7F0NY&feature=related

    Finland – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xds8x19PZ5o

Battersea Power Station (Gymkhana) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY6DMRx7RIo

DIRT 2 was disappointing, I know – but Codies have listened to the fans. Rallying now makes up 60% of the game, and everything else (including Gymkhana and the “party mode” games) makes up the remaining 40%, and DIRT 3 is said to be bigger than its predecessor.

And here’s a list of confirmed cars:

    Mini Cooper S

    Lancia Fulvia

    Alpine A110

    Ford Mk.II McRae Escort

    Lancia Stratos

    Talbot Sunbeam Lotus

    Ford Fiesta

    Peugeot 207 (Kris Meeke)

    Fiat Grand Punto Abarth

    Skoda Fabia

    Ford Focus RS WRC 2010

    Citroen C4 WRC 2010

    Ford Fiesta WRC 2011

    Mini Countryman WRC 2011

    McRae R4

    Ford RS200E

Wow, all that spinning in the Gymkhana video makes me dizzy! It looks a cool game though, it looks like I’m going to have to decide between it and GT5 to become my next racing game

Well, I used to moderate over at GT Planet, so I followed GT5 fairly closely during its release. The reception hasn’t been altogether positive.

DiRT 2 wasn’t disappointing, I thought it was a great game. Sure it was more focussed on custom built cross-over circuits and other series of vehicles, but I still think it had a good element of long dirt tracks and the gameplay was second to none in that genre.

I was expecting GRID 2 to be honest but when DiRT 3 was dirt announced I wasn’t disappointed, and since the official WRC game is a complete dog I am expecting some brilliant rally stages form Codies next attempt.

To be honest though, there hasn’t been a better rally game since Colin McRae ’05.

Does anybody here have DiRT 3? If so, what do you think of it?

I’ve got it for the Xbox, absolutely great game.

It’s got quite a diverse range or rally forms and allows you often to race them in a variety of vehicles.

I’m having a blast with it, far more comprehensive than Dirt 2.

Not tried it with my wheel yet but that’s the plan for sunday!

I see they’ve dropped McRae’s name from the box. Does it still have the ‘in memory of Colin McRae’ screen when you start it up?

I guess they will change the name to Ken Block: Dirt 4 for the next one given his heavy involvement in the Dirt games.

Final question, can you ‘be Kimi’ in the rally part of the game?

It took me the better part of a week, but I’ve finished the Dirt Tour mode, save for the DC challenges and three gymkhana missions that I find endlessly frustrating. I’m mostly concentrating on the online mode now, mostly playing the point-to-point events. I really don’t like Landrush and Rallycross because all anyone ever does is crash into you to get position. Unless you manage to luck into a front-row grid position (and I think positions in the Pro Tour are set by online levels, with the higher-ranked players at the back), you’re pretty much screwed by the first corner.

I’ve heard the series moved away from McRae at the request of his family. There are, however, a few references to him in the game: the Colin McRae Vision liveries, the No Fear gold and No Fear black liveries, the McRae Motorsports X4 and the McRae Memorial livery.

And no, you cannot ‘be Kimi’ in the game. His livery does not even appaer; his likeness is probably in Black Bean’s WRC 210. Ken Block (who is a much better driver in the game than in real life), Sebastien Ogier and Kris Meeke are the only licenced drivers in the game. And for some reason, the FIA vice-president, Mohammed ben Sulaymen, who was also in DIRT 2. All of the other drivers are fictional, with names like Henri Saarinen, Dmitri Smetsky, Jason Porter and Bertrand Duez.

P.Monkeys, you should increase the difficulity level.

Mohammed bin Sulayem was a Rally driver..

I completed the DiRT Tour a few days ago, and now mainly play online with it, now that the PS Store has returned. I’ve been doing Jam Sessions with my mates; ‘Outbreak’, where a car is infected and has to ram the other cars to infect them too and ‘Cat & Mouse’ where there are up to four different teams that have to make sure their Mini makes it to the finish first, and take out the other Minis…. its so much fun, if anyone wants to play sometime, add me on PSN: ‘spursfan39’ :)

@ Calum, Yeah I was thinking it may be ‘Ken Block’s DiRT 4’ next time… Unless he becomes a serious contender for the WRC crown, I doubt it.

I already have the difficulty level at 6 and all aids turned off.

Gymkhana has let me down. I don’t want specific areas where I get awarded for moves, If i want to spin between those buildings why not? Why in such a small area, I know theres the problem with huge scores and people just staying in the same place, but it would give it a much more realistic feel.

I haven’t played online yet due to the PS store being down, but I see its back online now thanks to @spursfan39.

There are a few issues which leads me into concluding that DiRT 2 was better, the rallies in Dirt 3 seem shorter, less interesting, they all look the same (respective of location) and there are far less of them, or so it feels. The Rallycross tracks are half the size and contain on average 2 corners, this is frustrating and is leads to rivals throwing their cars up the inside, and hitting you off in the process, its far less enjoyable when you make a good overtake in DiRT 3 compared with 2 as in the latter you really had to work for it.

I may only be on the third “triangle” or season, but 4 locations for rallies just isn’t enough, Finland, Norway, Kenya and Michigan, theres no iconic section that makes the track feel special, such as the Church in Croatia in DiRT 2.

Although it’s boasted that there are multiple tracks for both of the disciplines mentioned thus far, many of the tracks share many sections or are just the same track, in reverse.

Why in such a small area, I know theres the problem with huge scores and people just staying in the same place, but it would give it a much more realistic feel.

You can’t just stay in the same place. If you keep doing the same tricks (or combinations of tricks) over and over and again, the game will recognise it and declare your moves to be stale, marking you down for it. I picked up the Gymkharnage achievement this morning – which requires you to score 500,000 or more points in Gymkhana – and I had to go up and down the length of one of the Monaco arenas three times to do it (I wasn’t even aware I’d managed it; I was having a good battle with someone online and we were pretty evenly matched until then).

there are far less of them, or so it feels.

DIRT 3 has 4 locations with 8 stages each for a total of 32 stages. DIRT 2 had 6 locations with 4 stages each, for just 24 stages. So it’s already 33% bigger.

The Rallycross tracks are half the size and contain on average 2 corners

The early Aspen and Smelter circuits are very simple, yes – but they have some much harder ones. And to be perfectly honest, most rallycross circuits are simple. Just wait until you try some of the Monaco events; they might look easy, but they’re tough.

Although it’s boasted that there are multiple tracks for both of the disciplines mentioned thus far, many of the tracks share many sections or are just the same track, in reverse.

And those sections require completely different approaches. For example, some of the stages in Finland are short and fast, and while the early sections of the longer stages might be the same as the stage you just did, they have much more technical sections to them as well.

Prisoner Monkeys has it spot on in my opinion. But nevertheless, I do wish there were more locations. I believe that some of the stages are just reverse versions of others… which disappoints me.

And also, I congratulate you PM, Gymkarnage is no mean feat, I managed a score of 498,000, and later realised there was a trophy for a score of 500,000. Sad face.

I see what you mean, but I like a change of scenery, so i’d rather less stages, and have more variety, all the Norway stages feel the same to me, and I just get bored driving them. Are there other Monaco’s apart from Sainte Devote and Port Neuve and their reversed counterparts?

And anyone got an news on any DLC coming soon?
