Schumacher takes stunning pole at Imola

    1st May, 1999

Michael Schumacher has put in a stunning lap to secure pole position for the San Marino Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver was over five tenths faster then David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello who claimed a podium at the Brazilian Grand Prix; qualified third. Mika Hakkinen qualified 4th, ahead of Damon Hill and Eddie Irvine.

For the third successive race, Nic Morley will start from last on the grid. The Arrows driver was less then a tenth of a second behind Marc Gene. Pedro de la Rosa out performed his teammate to qualify 19th fastest.

“I think I could of got another half a second out of my lap. However I made a costly mistake on my fastest lap. We will see where what we can do from here. Anything is possibly, however need to be careful heading into turn 1; especially with a lot of inexperienced drivers”, claimed Morley.

Can Michael Schumacher respond from his disaster of a Brazilian Grand Prix; or can David Coulthard make it a third different winner of the season?
