Earlier this week, we heard that Franklin F1 were in dire straights with financial issues. After much speculation and rumours flying around, we were finally able to secure the Team Principal of the British team to find out what was really going on.
“We were in a far worse situation that people suspected. At first, it was just one sponsor, which had decided to withdraw, but that quickly grew to three of our five sponsors (Honda not withstanding). However, there was never any doubt in the team that we would be competing this season. We have an incredibly motivated team, and we knew we would get out of this,”
“Something I hadn’t expected was Lucas Wilson had actually offered me a substantial amount of money to continue, which was extremely generous. I had to respectfully decline, but I cannot thank him enough for even thinking of us in this time. Thankfully, we had just come back from some very successful negotiations. We had been in talks with a few different companies at this point, one of which was Red Bull. They were very interested in coming on board and offered a significant amount. However, they were looking to become our title sponsor, which would have turned us into Red Bull Franklin F1. Call me foolish, but I want this team to create and maintain its own identity, so we couldn’t go through with it. In their place though, we have some excellent partners on board, and we are just waiting for the go ahead from the organizers as to whether we have time to alter our livery in time for the first race. Upon that time, you will all get to see the three new sponsors, which we have secured!”
Exciting times ahead for fans of Franklin, especially given that they have a line of merchandise, which is looking to go on sale very soon.
