A good opening race for me it was.
Qualifying looked as if it wasn’t going to end well as my first two flying laps were invalidated by conercutting escapades. But on my third flying lap I got a run in that I was happy with, my first run would have arguably been a bit faster had it not been for the corner cutting but nevertheless I was satisfied.
I didn’t change my set up at all before qualy to account for the rain and hadn’t done any rainy practice so was unsure as to what sort of grip levels and braking distances there would be on track. I got a good start, getting away cleanly I managed to avoid any discomfort at the heavy braking zone at (turn 3 is it)? I felt fortunate to get away because everyone behind me seemed to just pile in to each other, and then into the gravel (I seem to remember hearing screams and groans over the voice chat but maybe I was just imagining it). ms20 got out of the mayhem of turn 3 fairly unscathed though and was right on my tail.. He seemed to adapt well to the wet conditions and had a better understanding of how to get around quickly, at an earlier stage than I did. I can’t remember exactly where, but he made a very clean overtake somewhere, I was pretty powerless at the time, struggling with finding my feet in the harsh conditions… after a couple of laps though I managed to find a slightly better rythum and at turn 7 ( possibly eight, the one before the back straight.) as I had look down the inside of ms20, he outbraked himself. Coincidentally I also outbraked my self but not quite as badly so managed to sneak past……. the rest of the majority of the race was spent trying to find more speed and pulling a gap.. ms20 fell behind quite suddenly at times so I believe he may have had a few offs and that allowed me to pull away. at the time I was concious of jonny being quick, due to the amount of fastest laps he was setting, but wasn’t aware that he was making a comback from pretty much at the back of the grid.. I found jonny tended to be one step ahead when getting the most out of the track ; he would set a fastest lap then I’d reply, hed set a fastest lap, then I’d reply etc…… luckily I managed to reply to his quickest lap and beat it by a couple of tenths before my tyres fell away and Jonny started to reel me back in….I had a decent lead about 5 laps from the end so it would have taken a big mistake for me to of been caught so I thought cruising to the finish was my best bet. and having several offs on the last lap I finished well ahead and rounded off a good grand prix!

Jonnys stunning comeback easily deserves driver of the day also considering it’s his first race! had he been behind me all the way it would have been way more tricky…..

Terrible race last week due to a large amount of driver errors and the disconnection right near the end. Not a really good start for the Williams team. Haven’t practiced for tomorrow either! and hoping to get a least an hours worth in asap.

@strunk27 I forgot… Can you make this race at 20.20GMT?? If not what time is the earliest you can start?

  • Profile picture of strunk27 strunk27 said 7 months, 2 weeks ago:

@MadDogMolloy forgot to mention this after the race but we switched clocks last night in the US so no need to change the start time. Talk to you then!

Cool. See you all at 20:20GMT!

I’m 50/50 at present. Only just leaving work, and need to have food.

Also, I’ve done precisely 15 laps of the Sepang circuit and am therefore expecting to be woeful again this week.

Please invite me anyway and I’ll make a call as to whether I join in tonight or not. I probably will.

Qualified 3rd. the car felt quite heavy for some reason but quite a good lap.

Got up into 2nd, controller disconnected randomly into the slow corner in the middle of the lap and I think I caused someone to spin off but I’m not too sure. Stayed 2nd until Jonny overtook some laps later then pitted one lap later and came out ahead.
I forgot to choose wet weather tyres so I had a lap of sliding around and another stop and gambled on full wets.
Got up into 4th as people started spinning (on the inters I think) then randomly disconnected from the lobby even though my xbox live seemed to stay connected.
Very frustrating since I was in a good position on the wet tyres and had a chance for another good finish.

From your views did I disconnect from xbox live or just leave the lobby?

I haven’t seen the result yet but I assume Lemon is DOTD for winning again :p.

Qualifying: I did pretty well, getting third with my second attempt, but Johnny put in an excellant lap to deny me a place in the press conference. A bit annoyed that I didn’t leave myself enough time for a third run, since I knew i could have set a 1:34 and perhaps challenged Lemon.

Race: got a good start, was about to take third place into the first corner, when I was hit from behind by what looked like a force india, taking me out, but luckily i was able to recover to fifth which became fourth as I outbroke a ferrari into turn 3 (strunk). I found myself behind Kevin, and Strub for a bit, while they were both battling, Kevin went really wide, and being so close I tried down the inside hoping he’d see me, but he didn’t meaning we banged wheels. I didn’t see what happened to him, but Johnny (who i guess also got caught out in the opening laps ) nipped past. I being so close to him, I managed to follow him, and outbroke him into turn 1 with him very fairly giving me space. I was now going after third place and after getting a run I managed to pressure @Strunk27 into outbraking himself and going off at turn 3 while i drove past. I than had Johnny catching me fast, and I could feel my tyres going, he caught up, and I let him past down the back straight, saving my KERS which with DRS allowed me to retake the position into turn 1, We had another excellent battle and on the turn before the back straight I let Johnny through to get a run on him, but was taken out from behind (like Webber-Ham Aus 2010) by @Strunk27 eager to be part of the fray, wiping me out and destroying what was left of my tyres. I had Kevin closing fast, and I was only able to keep him at bay briefly since my tyres meant I had no traction and was having to be very ginger with the throttle out of turns so not to spin. He passed me once, but I stayed close throughout the lap and was able to repass him. We both pitted at the same time for Inters, but while driving into the pits my I forgot where pitlane assist kicks in, slowed down , and allowed Kevin to pass. Despite requesting inters, I came out onto the track with full wets. Unable to get any traction, spinning like a top and haemorraghing positions whilst also being thoroughly frustrated with my race so far, I turned off the game in disgust.

I was happy with my performance, and this looked to be the first time I had a decent shot at the podium on pure pace. A couple of incidents (at the start and during the race) that weren’t my fault, and what seems like a glitch in the game ruined what would have been a decent haul. I have to apologise to @PowderFinger both for my ambitious move, and for seemingly weaving down the backstraight, when I was trying to let him pass to get DRS but was unsure which way he was coming past.

    Next week!

I had fun today. My dry pace was poor but not as bad as last week and i lined up in last.

Had a good start and up to around 7th by turn 4. Mad a slight error in the left right sweeper and i lost a couple of places and dazza took an optimistic lunge on me at the double right causing me to be back at the back again.

Was pleased to get thru 11 laps without getting lapped and was not making mistakes and whilst i was slow it was much better than last week.

the rain coming was a good thing (somewhat surprisingly!!). I was doing ok on the inters catching those in front of me and then chose the perfect time to stop for wets and actually got in front of someone for the 1st time this year to run in 9th!!).

Had a few laps pegging the gap but then made a big mistake and lost the place and about 20seconds!!

On lap 21 it looked pretty dry and there was literally no spray so i pitted and gambled on options. Big mistake!! I was on ice with no grip but it was some challenge and i was having fun for the first time since i have been playing this game!!

With the right strategy i might have got 9th or 8th and wouldn’t have been lapped more than once.

Another point in the bag and things can only get better!! ;-)

At least second was mine until I suffered some horrid luck.

Got an average start, but those behind me got a better one. Someone, however, got too good a start and must have been so excited about it that they forgot to brake for the forthcoming corner lol. I deliberately ran wide as I watched a few three-wide battles form going towards turn one, but I got a nasty bump from a driver a few positions back. The game wisely believed I was at fault for being hit off, so I got a 10 second penalty.

The situation was not as bad as turn three in Australia last week, where I spun completely and rejoined near the back, but I had lost a few positions and was down in sixth. It was only the start of a miserable race for me unfortunately.

Again, like last week, I qualified on the primes in the hope that the rain would arrive later on in the race and I would theoretically save myself a pit stop. Again, like last week, I was wrong. The rain was perfectly timed for everyone on the options, meaning the early laps I spent making my way up through the field on slower tyres were not optimised.

Noticing the change from dry to inters weather can be tricky, but when time to swap tyres does arrive, the grip conveniently drops in an instant. I was fortunate that it did that as I rounded the final corner, so I dived in the pits and benefitted from immaculate timing to pip @ms20 into second.

Unfortunately, with assists on anyway, noticing the change from inters to full wets is much harder. By the time the car is sliding around, full wets have probably been the ideal tyre for at least a lap. I wasn’t so lucky in getting this bit right. I think I had already had a few wobbly moments, notably giving a small tap to someone I was lapping (enough, however, for the game to double my penalty) but the worst came when I entered the pits for wets.

I didn’t read the tyre buttons properly on the D-Pad, and so randomly pressed the bottom button for the bottom option. Codies don’t have that much common sense, so the bottom option (wets) is as you all know triggered by the left button instead. As a result I came out with inters on a soaked circuit. Any chance of a win was gone there and then.

I eventually crawled back to the pits to put the correct tyres on… “the rain is expected to improve in the next few minutes”. Sigh.

The blue skies held off for a bit so I could justify making the switch to full wets for a bit, before it was time to return to inters once more – and time for the all-new localised weather feature to take the piss.

Now when Codies announced the introduction of the new weather system, I was chuffed. But in the back of my mind I envisaged moments similar to the final part of tonight’s race, when one part of the circuit was in the middle of a monsoon, and another like a July summer’s afternoon in Kenya. These ‘parts’ of the circuit were about 100metres apart.

I had no consistency, no pace, and seemingly no hope of a podium. But then I got up to third somehow (can’t remember), and then I closed in on and passed @PowderFinger on the last lap. The comical penalty system had the last laugh as I was demoted back to third, when realistically I had a decent shout of a win.

The biggest positive I can take from today would be that I don’t have to drive on that garbage circuit for at least five months (excluding career of course lol).

    Good race all.

Qualified in 10th. Made a good start and managed to avoid the carnage through turn 1 to be in 6th. However turning into turn 2 @kvothe knocked me into a spin and I dropped to 11th. i tried to pass @cscottyf195 into turn 4 but @mrgrieves went down my inside which meant I was pushed into @cscottyf195. The first 3 laps @cscotty (odin) hit me a few times, I got pretty frustrated when this happened going into turn 1 on lap3. He passed and in my frustration got on the throttle a little too early coming out of turn 4. this sent me into a spin and when I got back in the track I had gone from 9th to 12th.

I was running in 12th waiting for it to rain. When it did and I lost grip I pitted for inters. I then changed to wets then inters again and finally to options. I managed to somehow get to 7th place (maybe helped by some of the disconnections). I got bitten by the wet weather bug when I put the options on around lap 23/24. I went straight on at turn 1 and spun coming out of turn 2. Codemasters really need to sort this out! @cscottyf195 passed me and pitted the next lap. I passed him as he did exactly the same thing coming out of turn 2. Was back in 7th which I stayed in until the flag.

Hopefully my luck at the first corner will change in China next week. Been caught up in 2 first lap incidents in the first 2 races. Hope it’s dry too..

DOTD- @lemon who somehow seems to win even in crazy changeable conditions.

I recorded the race so will try to get that up sometime this week… gives a good view of the madness of turn 1.

Pretty much the definition of a terrible race for me. I got a decent start and was up the inside of Strunk who tried to squeeze me out, while still leaving a gentlemanly amount of space. Going into the first corner I had to turn into the corner early to avoid my teammate who made somewhat of a bonzai move down the inside, my early turn in put me into the path of Strunk which put me into a spin and into last place. I spent a number of laps watching a brilliant fight between Odin, Mad dog and I think it was either gameprotage or y2j before I eventually managed to pass them.

@MadDogMolloy, if you want to have a look at some of your incidents with odin they’re in the video below, although I have to say, apart from the one going into the first corner of the lap you spun on most of them looked pretty innocent.

I pitted a lap too late for the inters and took a gamble by going straight on to the wets on the following lap, over the next few laps, while everyone else struggled on the inters I went from 6th to 2nd and only missed out on the lead by a few points of a second when Lemon came out of the pits. I was hoping the extra laps I’d done on wets before Lemon would give me the advantage to pass on the opening lap but was forced to just stick close behind. I was able to keep him honest for around half a dozen laps before the track started to dry, I was tempted to go in straight for drys but me and Lemon lapped inferno who was skidding all over the place on drys so I decided to leave it another few laps

With around 8 laps let I decided it might be dry enough for options and immediately gave a groan when I realised I should have put inters on, for the next 6 laps I lost my 30 odd second lead to Kevin and ended up in 6th. In those llast 8 laps I went from being around 5 or 6 seconds behind Lemon to almost being lapped by him on the last lap.

My pace at wet tracks seems to be a lot better than on dry, so I’m hoping the xbox update isn’t for another week or two

Messy race for me and in the dry oddly enough I was struggling. First and foremost I want to apologize to @gameprotage for sending you off. 100% my fault on going for a gap that was not there, so really sorry about that.

Qualifying – Beginning to feel that I’ve lost some pace from 2011. Qualified 3rd behind Lemon and MS20 initially and then fell down the order to seventh. I only did one lap as I wanted to save my current set of options so if the race started dry I could hopefully make it to the rain.

Race – Not my best showing. Had a decent start and made up spots in the first hairpin so I stayed wide in the second hairpin to avoid contact. I received a penalty and not sure what for, but I’m sure I hit someone so sorry if it was you and affected your race. Had good pace for the most part at the start, was third following @ms20 and @lemon on the opening laps. after coming under pressure though I made some mistakes and found myself fifth in a battle with @jonny705 and @kvothe. On lap 8 gameprotage made a slight mistake letting jonny by and in the moment I tried to force it unfortunately taking @kvothe out. Sorry again about that, it was a pretty poor mistake on my part. After this I made another mistake going into turn 2 and spun. I rejoined carelessly right infront of @cscottyf195 so sorry about that as well. My fault completely. (Not a good day between me and Williams ;P)

As the rain began to fall I pitted to inters and ran those for a few laps. It than began pouring and I waited one lap too late to switch to full wets and lost around 20 seconds on my in lap. After this I got my bearings and had a clean, and exciting finish to the race. (Sorry @ljkobrien for not being able to avoid you after you spun, I tried!) Had a great battle with @jonny705 when the track was very wet yet somehow he was making inters work! Pulled a lead of just over twenty seconds out over @mrgreives in the closing laps to hang on to fourth despite my penaltys.

Pretty poor showing overall. Sorry to those I took out today. Looking forward to next week!

DOD: @Jonny705 for some hard, clean racing! Nice work
