One thing is that the legend mode is easy for me. Though again this is cos I used full TC. Any tips on how to drive with TC disabled? cos I am very very bad without it. ):

I play with PC so another weakness is that I cannot have half throttle, only full throttle or throttle off. this is cos there is no joystick compared to PS3 etc. This probably increased my frequency of spinning with no TC.

You guys need to turn the AI difficulty up! It’s way more rewarding to struggle to 15th than win nearly every race for one of the new teams.

Just finished my first season with HRT. I’m on Xbox, gamepad and play with med traction control, 50% races and legendary AI.

Started pretty slowly, but after 3 or 4 races I was on the pace and had found my preferred set up (I only really varied the aero and gear ratios after that, except for the extreme tracks and wet sessions). Managed to qualify in front of the other slow cars except on a few tracks, but was quite far back from the next team (Williams, who I’ve signed for next season!).

Races are usually a different story as I’ve found it really hard to keep my pace consistent. I try not to banzai the first lap, tempting though it is, and usually I find myself racing with the rest of the slow cars throughout the race. There’s only been a couple of races which I’ve found myself racing by myself, most of them I found myself under pressure for some or even all the race.

I have to admit I almost threw my controller out of the window a few times – the first in China, where I was on my way to (at the time) my personal best finish of 18th but managed to harpoon Heidfeld, who’d just lapped me, and got a 20 second time penalty to put me last.

The other two involved tyre strategies. One, at Monza, was just me getting greedy and trying to do one less stop than everyone else and falling off the cliff on the last couple of laps (again managing to go from 18th to last, this time thanks to a spin in between the Lesmos). The other was unfortunately because of one the numerous bugs in the game – I had to make an extra stop after the team fitted me with an already destroyed set at Singapore, which cost me a 14th place after a huge first lap tangle between most of the midfield cars :( I’ve tended to stick with the recommended pit stop strategies after these incidents and haven’t had any problems.

My best finish was 13th at South Korea, after a lot of retirements. I’ll take it though, as I gave me 18th place in the championship and otherwise I think I would have finished the season in 21st!

Really enjoyed the season overall, looking forward to getting started on the next one might hunt down a steering wheel in the January sales too.

    Malaysia
The race started on the wet, and everyone had intermediates. Alonso started from pole ahead of Massa. After an amazing start I led the race after turn 3, but was constantly under attack being KERS-less in the long straights. I always held the inside line and defended well, but it was a hard time. I led up to lap 5, when I pitted, together with Alonso and Vettel who was just behind. I came out 9th. Alonso spun on lap 7 and Hamilton was up behind me. Meanwhile I was back up to 3rd, with Massa and Webber having passed me with their extra lap (they were clearly faster than I was). Hamilton and Vettel passed me after a mistake, but I took both places back, before Hamilton re-passed me and made the move stick. Vettel spun as well, and Schumacher was my next rival. He put me under pressure for the rest of the race, but was overtaken by Sutil on the last lap and I finished 5th. Massa won, Liuzzi was 21st.

Haven’t played my career since mid way through my 2nd season (which I achieved within a month of the game being out)….. This is mainly because the AI is too slow, even on Legend AI in a Williams I can comfortably win every race, some by a ridiculous margin. I did a 100% distance at Catalunya in a Mclaren recently, I lapped the entire field TWICE! (the tail enders 8-9 times). So boring!

So – I started to play online. I get FAR more enjoyment out of the game by racing wheel to wheel with other real racers. Really wish the AI was stronger, as it would be nice to continue the career ….

I’ve got the PC version. I started out with Virgin and won then title and then went to STR and won the title again. Now I have it on the hardest settings while I’m with Ferrari but I’m only doing three lap races. I was really enjoying it until I played online last night which was just so thrilling and so much fun that the career mode now feels a bit hollow for me but now I’ve no one to play with so it’ll have to do :P

@Steph Three lap races? No wonder you’re finding it easy! You want more of a challenge, bump it up to 20% minimum.

  • Profile picture of IsaacTham IsaacTham said 1 year, 5 months ago:

50% is better if you want more variety in pit strategy.

In 20% most drivers don’t pit at all in wet races and in dry races only do one stop. 50% will test your tyre management to the max because some races require 4 stops (for an aggressive setup). Hungary in particular saw me doing 5 stops while Massa did 2. I still finished ahead of him though. :D

I seriously just don’t have the attention span for it. 20% races I could just about handle but I’d get bored after that

  • Profile picture of Magnificent Geoffrey Magnificent Geoffrey said 1 year, 5 months ago:

@Steph You won’t though. Trust me on this. Once you’ve given it a go, you’ll realise that longer races are far more immersive and exciting and rewarding than a three lap race could ever be. Do a 40% race in Grand Prix mode later today. Just do it. Go on. I’ll wait.

If it was an online race I’d probably look forward to it but when it’s just career I can’t help but think it feels a bit hollow :P I do want to see what the SC is like though…

    China
I had originally qualified 14th, but the game didn’t save and I had to qualify again. I got into Q2 using soft tyres, and then found Barrichello ahead of me on my flying lap. I was 15th but I crossed the finish line with some thousandths of a second left on the clock, so I completed another lap which gave me 6th position. I was just 0.005s behind Rosberg in 9th position, so I pushed harder, but only damaged my tyres, and I crashed in the last turn with the chequered flag already waving. Before the race my soft tyres had only 83% of condition.
Massa was on pole, Kobayashi started 4th; I passed many driver in the first corners and took the lead. Massa used KERS to pass me on the back stratight, but I braked later on the inside and kept the position. We did the same on lap 2, but at the exit of the hairpin he had a better acceleration and passed: Kobayashi was behind me now. I anticipated my stop to lap 3 as my tyres had completely worn off, and with an extra out lap Vettel and Kobayashi passed me. Sutil slowed both down, especially the Japanese who couldn’t find a way through, but my hard tyres were off the cliff already on lap 8.
With Button stopping from the lead I was 4th, and kept him behind in the penultimate lap. He passed me just before the DRS detection point but I couldn’t catch him even if I had my wing open, and finished 5th. Massa won, Liuzzi was 21st.

I’ve actually given up on mine now. All the bugs, stupid penalties, rubbish AI, unrealistic objectives, I just got tired of it. I only play online now. Don’t think I’ll be getting the next one.

Surprisingly, F1 2011 couldn’t read my save files, so I had to restart my career. I completed the first three races (just 3 laps) to qualify and finish in the same position as I had already done the first time, to keep most statistics the same. Alonso won all of these races.

    Turkey
I reverted back to 20% length, and 3/4 AI strength. My objective was 12th place in qualifying, but I was slower. I myself was suprised to reach Q3 with a great lap: there I was 4th for most of the session, but completed 3 more laps to try and improve. I didn’t but the others did, and I was 7th.
My aim was to finish in the points. I earned one position on the outside of turn 1, and I was second by turn 5. Hamilton led and pulled away astonishingly fast. Webber found a way past me a few laps later and soon was out of sight. My tyres had already lost 20% of their life before the race even started, but I made them last until my planned stop on lap 5. Alonso had passed me the lap before, but as I exited I was ahead.
Alonso repassed mebriefly after, and I was in 4th position. Vettel reached me and many times passed me after turn 8, so I had the DRS and he did not. Sometimes I stayed behind and passed him at turn 11, sometimes at turn 9, but he couldn’t pass. Then he spun and with three laps to go Schumacher was 5th, 9 seconds behind. He destroyed the gap and reached me on the final lap but I kept him behind and equalled my season-best result.
Hamilton won, Alonso was 3rd and Liuzzi a great 14th.

    Spain
I passed to Q2 in 11th place, using hard tyres. I had high hopes for Q2, and I finished it on top. I started dreaming of pole, but not only was I unable to replicate my Q2 time, but I also finished 10th, which was the objecive the team gave me.
With an Alonso-like start, I was up into 4th position and started a fight with Webber who eventually passed me a few laps later. I pitted but lost time due to a Renault approaching, and I was in 10th place, which improved to 8th once everyone had pitted.
I was three-and-a-half seconds behind Heidfeld, and earned 4 tenths per lap for two laps, but then lost a lot on the following one and I just brought the car home in 8th place, the result the team aimed for.
I lapped D’Ambrosio on lap 12, and finished just metres behind lapping Trulli on lap 13.
Button won, Alonso was 3rd and Liuzzi 21st.
