Has anyone noticed that when you change teams midseason the car you move to is practically undrivable? I’ve just moved from Caterham to Toro Rosso in the hope of being able to compete regularly for points but alas, the car is (in my hands at least) an absolute dog and the handling may actually be worse than the Caterham I just left. If anything I’m now qualifying further away from the midfield than I was with the Caterham and I’m a lot closer to the bottom 3 teams too. I’m seriously rgretting making the move, it seems the upswing in form that got me the contract (finishing an annoying 11th at Canada, nabbing my first points with an 8th place finish at Valencia and finishing 13th at Silverstone and Hockenheim) offer is going to be hard to carry on with Toro Rosso. I was massively off the pace in Hungary and at Spa…circuits I’m usually good at.

Oh, you also don’t start the team mate challenge from zero either. So I’m starting with a massive qualifying and fastest lap deficit to Ricciardo which I will not be able to overcome. Doesn’t seem fair to me.

Season 1 – HRT F1 Team #23 (Difficulty 4/4)

Race 1: Australia
Qualifying: 20th – Race: 22nd
After extremely positive young drivers’ tests with Ferrari, I signed with HRT for my debut season. Not having taken part in free practice, I was only a tenth down on de la Rosa’s time in Q1, but I later improved to take 20th place, second-best amongst the new teams, 2 tenths faster than my team mate.
I gained several places at the start, reaching the 8th place; but when I attacked Grosjean, he didn’t give up and pushed me from the left side: we both spun and lost three positions. Those ahead of me vanished quickly, and Petrov reached me within a couple of laps. I pitted on lap 6 and up till then everything was going pretty well, but on that same lap I was reached and attacked at the same time by Vergne and Raikkonen, on two opposite sides, and I was squeezed between them. I spun, dragging Raikkonen with me onto the wall: I lost my front wing and the Finn retired. I was handed a penalty for this which I served two laps later as on that lap my priority was to change the nosecone. As I lay alone in 22nd position, last of the running cars, I made a mistake on lap 13, spinning on the exit of turn 12, destroying my front wing and puncturing a tyre. As I was lapped twice, I ended my race exiting from the pits.

Race 2: Malaysia
Qualifying: 23rd – Race: 23rd
I waited until the last minutes of qualifying to go out, and with my first lap I was 23rd ahead of de la Rosa. On my next two laps, after improving in the first sector, I spun and I couldn’t improve my position.
With brave lines at the start I reached the 8th place, which, despite frequent attacks, I kept until lap 6 when my pit stop was scheduled. As I enter the pit lane my tyres lacked grip and I went wide, clinching the grass and spinning into the barrier, destroying my wing. I had to reverse to get into the pits, and I dropped down to 21st. Raikkonen was behind me but quickly recovered and reached me, and I kept him behind until lap 13, when Hulkenberg also reached us. At the time I was recovering even up to a second per lap on de la Rosa who was ahead of me. I made a mistake and the German passed, but I kept Raikkonen behind until the last lap, when, trying to defend, I touched him and he spun. The stewards handed me a 20 second time penalty, which dropped me also behind Vergne, by one second: I was 23rd.

Race 3: China
Qualifying: 19th – Race: 13th
The weekend started very well, as I was the quickest of the new teams in free practice. I remained on form in qualifying, as I battled with Senna and Ricciardo to escape the dropout zone: in the end I was 19th, but one second quicker than Kovalainen who was 20th, whilst de la Rosa was 23rd.
On the first lap of the race I reached the 9th position as there were a few accidents, but slowly I was passed by one car at the time. I was in 12th place on lap 6 when I pitted, but I lost a position on Grosjean as he stayed out longer. During the rest of the race I lost a position to Massa and then fought against Ricciardo, Kobayashi and Senna to hold my position. With Webber’s retirement I finished 13th, whilst de la Rosa was behind me for the first time of the season, in 18th place.

Race 4: Bahrain
Qualifying: 19th – Race: 6th
Again, I was 19th in qualifying, over a second faster than Petrov who was 20th.
I had a great start, as I drove bravely around the first corners but I stayed out of trouble. I reached the 5th place but Vettel got past quickly. I kept the 6th position until lap 6 when I pitted, and then pushed so hard that on the following lap I was 7th. Senna was 18 seconds ahead of me and he pitted on lap 8, and I overtook him by very little. It was incredibly hard but I managed to keep everyone behind until the chequered flag, to score my first points. I was holding up a queue of many drivers whilst Perez, who was 5th, was over 40 seconds ahead. De la Rosa was 20th.

Race 5: Spain
Qualifying: 19th – Race: 13th
Once again I was 19th in qualifying with a second of advantage on Petrov; de la Rosa was 21st.
After recovering many positions, as usual, I was 8th on the first lap, and I never let it go. I had to pit on lap 6 but unfortunately I lost two positions in the pit lane, and a further four to the drivers who stayed out one lap longer. A couple of laps later I was earning ground quickly on Rosberg, as Kovalainen was ahead of him, but he pitted on lap 11 before I could reach the pair. I had a hard time keeping everyone behind me, as they attacked using the DRS and I had to out-break them. I managed to fulfil my task, and as Hamilton crossed the finish line first I was approaching the first turn of my last lap. I took 13th 25 seconds behind Grosjean, who was ahead of me; de la Rosa was 22nd.

In silverstone I had raced in the entire race distance 100%. At the first stint I was catching up with the likes of Senna and Perez and I passed Senna to me this was a small victory cause I was in a caterham and the type of difficulty was expert. But when I came for my first pitstopmI made a BIG mistake and I couldn’t recover for the rest of the race so I finishes 18th starting from 19th it sucks.

Race 6: Monaco
Qualifying: 19th – Race: 17th
With only a couple of laps at the end of qualifying I managed to take 19th place by three tenths on those behind me. I had a great start and reached the 9th position, which became 8th when Button retired with a burst engine. Still 8th, on lap 7 I spun exiting Tabac and I lost several positions. I anticipated my pit stop to that lap and once everyone had stopped I was 11th. On lap 17 I made a big mistake: I ran deep into turn 1, crashed into the barriers destroying my front wing and punctured my front-left tyre. I pitted but I was last, 18th, which became 17th when Rosberg retired. I crossed the line a lap down in 17th position, whilst de la Rosa scored his season-best result of 13th.

@geemac i had the exact same problem – I was regularly beating my teammate at Marussia and then got an offer to join Force India, joined them and now I’m struggling to even beat the backmarkers.

I was racing on legendary, but even putting the difficulty down to professional doesn’t seem to help.

Seriously considering restarting my career – annoyed to say the least.

Glad someone else had that experience, it really ruined my career and took all the fun out the game. After struggling in the first few races I really started to get the hang of the Caterham and I was getting some good results. 18th was my starting slot almost every race, I was cutting the gap to the Toro Rosso’s and I strongly challenged for and managed to score my first points. After the switch it was like I was driving a road car against F1 cars. Also knowing I was never going to be able to beat my team mate through no fault of my own was really frustrating.

I have to admit that I ended up rage quitting my career and starting again!

Race 7: Canada
Qualifying: 19th – Race: 12th
As usual, I was slower than the midfield but faster than the new teams, 8 and 5 tenths respectively, and I qualified in 19th place.
I managed to avoid Hamilton spinning and thanks to my aggressive first corners I was up to 3rd position. I held it until lap 7, defending from several attacks including those from Grosjean, whom I later passed at turn 2, and Schumacher, who I resisted to on the outside of the final chicane. When Grosjean crashed into Schumacher and gave me a gap of a few seconds on them, I took advantage of the situation and anticipated my pit stop, joining back in 7th. Those ahead all pitted and I was back in P3. Vergne was the first driver to successfully overtake me, but curiously he ran wide at turn 6 and I inherited 3rd place from him. However, with a few laps remaining I spun exiting the final chicane and destroyed my wing. I managed to enter the pits but I had lost 10 positions. The race became even crazier as several crashes saw me return in the points, as I was 8th. When I exited the hairpin on the penultimate lap, though, a lapped Lotus was holding up Vergne and I couldn’t help but hit him, and I earned a penalty. To make things worse, I got another one for corner cutting, and whilst defending from Senna we both spun exiting the final chicane. I crossed the line in 8th but was demoted to 12th.

Race 8: Europe
Qualifying: 22nd – Race: 3rd
Largely affected by the previous race’s result, the small teams had the qualifying of their lives: de la Rosa was 12th as I struggled to 22nd, ahead of Massa and Glock.
I immediately attacked at the start, earning 12 positions on the first lap, and another one on Schumacher who spun at the last corner. On lap 3 I passed Webber who was going slowly as he’d lost his front wing, and on lap 4 I did the same with Button and Kobayashi: I was 6th when I pitted on the 6th lap. I kept my place afterwards but as Grosjean retired I inherited 5th place; then Vettel retired and Alonso also lost his front wing, and I reached the podium. I gained benefit from driving until the last two laps with the maximum engine performance, but I risked losing my position on the penultimate lap when Kobayashi and Schumacher attacked me together, but I counter-attacked and recovered 3rd place. I finished there one minute behind Perez who was 12 seconds behind race-winner Hamilton; de la Rosa retired.

Race 9: Great Britain
Qualifying: 19th – Race: 18th
Despite being 18th for most of Q1, Schumacher improved to 18th in the final minutes, demoting me to my usual 19th place, just 3 tenths slower than him and 5 tenths faster than de la Rosa.
I “only” reached 11th place at the start but I simply couldn’t hold my rivals behind. Perhaps satisfied to have proven my talent in Valencia, I was not as defensive and the likes of Hulkenberg, Ricciardo, Schumacher and Maldonado all overtook me on track. I ended up being 18th, best of the new teams, as Vergne’s retirement promoted everyone by one place; de la Rosa was 20th.

Race 10: Germany
Qualifying: 21st – Race: 10th
Unfortunately I couldn’t match Caterham’s pace in qualifying, but I was ahead of both Marussias and de la Rosa, who was last. I recovered 13 places at the start and held 8th place from then until lap 5, when Grosjean, who was 7th at the time, pitted, and joined behind, promoting me by one position. I stopped on lap 7 but I lost the car exiting the pit lane and lost a position to Ricciardo as well as precious seconds, and more in a tangle with my team mate at turn 2. I was 11th after everyone had stopped, but Alonso’s retirement promoted me to the points zone. I had a gap on di Resta large enough for me to control the situation until the last three laps, when he and Raikkonen passed me once each in the DRS zone, only for me to brake later at the hairpin and take the position back. I finished 10th ahead of Raikkonen, whilst de la Rosa was 20th.

After playing offline, I decided to discard those saves as by accident I’d run one race with easy AIs, so I selected to load the Cloud files, but the game crashed and I lost everything, and now I’ve restarted my career.

Season 1 – HRT #23 (AI strength: 4/4)

Race 1: Australia
Qualifying: 19th – Race: 7th
I qualified 19th, 2 seconds slower than Hulkenberg and 2 hundredths of a second faster than Kovalainen; de la Rosa was 23rd.
I bravely drove through a gap between the cars which appeared at turn 1 and by braking lately and on the inside of turn 3 I took 4th place. I set my fuel on mix 3 as I had no problems in keeping my rivals behind, as the track is narrow and in the DRS zone the one move I was permitted to do allowed me to keep the inside line and maintain my position. I pitted on lap 6, and Hamilton’s stop was faster and he came out ahead of me, but he was slow out of the pit lane and I managed to overtake him on the inside of turn 1. Rosberg was the only one who had got ahead of me by pitting one lap later, but on lap 9 he ran wide to retire, in my opinion; however, he was back on track and right behind me within a couple of laps, after Schumacher overtook me on lap 11 in the second DRS zone. Hulkenberg was 4th but I thought he was going to pit, but apparently he’d already done so, and my 6th place came under further threat when Rosberg mimicked Schumacher’s manoeuvre on lap 14: this time I kept my position on the outside. I was now a few metres away from the chequered flag when Kobayashi managed to slipstream past me between my car and the wall, where I wouldn’t have thought he’d pass, and I finished 7th; de la Rosa, instead, was 19th.
