Ugh just had an intense race in the first round of my club skippy championship, I had a big slide on the last lap or it would have finished even closer: http://members.iracing.com/membersite/member/EventResult.do?&subsessionid=4940318&custid=16579

Man, so jealous! Those UK club races look like a lot of fun with so many people in a single skip race.

I had a *really* good skip season during the latter half of last season. I threw away a win at my very first Oulton race and after that my determination to not make mistakes just skyrocketed. I managed to have something like only 6x over 11 races. I felt pretty damn good managing to be in the top 5 in almost every one considering I’m always in top split. Even though I’m not nearly as fast as you, George (seriously, 1:44 laps at Okayama? I hit low 1:46′s at my best), I’m seeing myself as Button-esque: consistent, clean and smart, just lacking the raw speed. And I refrain from making Heidfeld comparisons since I’ve actually won some skip races ;).

Just had a race in the Mazda Cup. Well, I say just had, it’s still going. After a false start, stop/go penalty, 2 spins and a visit to the pits, I decided to quit out and I’m waiting for the results. I’m finding it so tricky an I’m at least 2 seconds off the pace. Guess I’m just not a very good race driver!

This new tyre model is really hard to get used to. Apparently I can’t choose the Mazda Roadster for the nVidia cup any more? It’s the one I was better in.

@joac21 you must be pretty damn good to be winning already! I’ve been playing for a total of 3 months and the best I’ve ever managed it a couple of 3rd places.

@ajokay are you alex oddell ? im in as Jose Arellano. i did all my “learning” on LFS have you tried it? its pretty reallistic as well. and you can see the fast guys telemetry to know where you can be faster. what are you racing the mazdas ?

  • Profile picture of Joey-Poey Joey-Poey said 1 year, 3 months ago:

AJ, one thing to keep in mind is SR is partly determined by how many corners you do. So quitting out just makes it worse. Best bet is to continue to run laps as cleanly as you can, unless the car is really too difficult to drive.

And for what it’s worth, the guys who actually race cars have told me the real thing isn’t nearly so difficult ;). So don’t get too downtrodden.

@Joey-Poey thats absolutely correct. i race a regional championship here in Mexico in the car i have as avatar :) and yes, in reality errors do come but not as often and as easy as here, its not because the simulation is wrong. its because you cant feel a lot of things that in real life you do. as well as the sense of speed its very low on the sim.

@joac21 Hi Jose, yeah that’s me. I’ve accepted your invite.

It’s kinda sad to hear that a sim can be more difficult than the real thing, but I guess the complete seperation from any sense of speed and inertia doesn’t help.

I’ve never heard of LFS, I’ve only ever played console racers and iRacing (along with the odd bit of GP2/3/4 on the PC).

I think I found the problem with the Mazda was that I practised in the Cup car and re-applied the base setup to that, but but then the game forced me into the Roadster without me realising so I didn’t have a chance to re-load the default setup. I shall try again tonight.

I will keep plugging away because this is something I do want to spend time doing, even if I’m only ever destined to be a virtual Nick Heidfeld. I’m working on the beard, at least.

I do think time spent focusing on one car/series does help a lot. I know I’m much faster and more aggressive in the skip now than I was a year ago. The more time you spend in a car, the more you learn to read how it’s behaving and react instinctively.

And sometimes driving style comes into play as well. I know I personally don’t like the MX-5′s as they don’t play nice over a long period of my hard braking. I get a bad push from overheating the front tires. Plus, I prefer the feeling of being dead middle in the single seaters and knowing exactly where my tires are. I feel more accurate. For those reasons, I know I’m much more comfortable running the Skip Barber. It’s more over-steery, but not overpowered and still allows close quarters racing.

I’d suggest scouring the forums looking at “introduction to driving X” threads for some of the other cars to see which sounds like fun or like it might be better suited to how you drive. I don’t know if you’ve made it to D-class yet, but the road side has plenty of options between the Jetta and Solstice (and MX-5 cup) in the GT Cup series, The Mustang Cup and the Skips. There’s also private leagues that run other cars for any license level, too. It just takes a bit of asking around and reading to know which direction you wanna go.

i second that.. you really have to commit to one car and a track to be competitive, at first i found the mazdas kind of boring but you start to enjoy them once you start being quick.

the mazda is the kind of car that goes faster when you dont push that much. the first 2 corners of lime rock are the best example of this. take them easy and ensure a good exit and you would be faster than trying to blast thru them

Cool news! The private league I’m running in (Continental Endurance Sports Car Series) will have all their races broadcast on glaciertv.com! I’ll post a link once they let us know it. First race is this weekend on Saturday the 11th. Race starts around 6:30 EST. I’ll be easy to spot: I’m the Miata with “PLUM STREET” in giant letters on the sides ;).

Entertaining race, the leader came in during the last caution for tyres and managed to make up about 6 places before the end of the race. You got really unlucky with that smash Joey, was really dumb for the guy to come back on track like that.

  • Profile picture of Joey-Poey Joey-Poey said 1 year, 3 months ago:

Obscenities were flying, trust me. Unfortunately, I can’t really hold it against him too much because his spotter never told him I was there so he had no idea. Only thing he could have done was be more aware having just recently passed me to know an MX5 would be coming up behind possibly.

But yeah, I’ve been feeling absolutely gutted tonight after that because I was looking at a top 5 finish after starting 10th. Now it’s a 2 week wait to redeem myself at Barber.

Just had a 25 lap Mazda race at Okayama. Aside from the 3rd corner pile up that left me with left-front wheel damage, having pitted for repairs and a 15 second penalty for entering the pits wrong (apparently), I drove a flawless race (albeit mostly on my own) second-last and 3 laps down. I’m still 2-3 seconds off the fastest laptimes at best though.

At least I’ve got a grip on driving the car, finally!
