Indian Grand Prix Preview
With four races to go, there remain nine drivers still in the hunt for title, with Jamie Franklin of Lotus heading the charge for the crown. His teammate Bradley Downton jumped into second following his crushing victory in Korea and will be hoping to close on the leader yet further on another of his favourite circuits today. Our destination for round 17 will be India, which Downton comments:
‘(India) is just such a pleasure to drive, the wide track and sweeping corners don’t usually suit my style, but this just does.’
Don’t be fooled though, it isn’t just Lotus in with a chance. William Ingram of McLaren is just 4 points shy of Downton, and 22 off of the lead, although he will need his team’s reliability to keep in check. That has what has cost his teammate this year, Alfie Widger, a shot at the title. Retiring from half of the races has been Widger’s undoing, though practically none of them were his fault.
Johnny Kingshark of Red Bull is only a further eight points off of Ingram and 30 off the Championship lead, but with a win and some retirement in front of him, he could be right back up there. Teammate Hollis Graham still remains in the fight mathematically, but being 63 points off of the lead, it’s difficult to see him clawing his way in.
The Ferrari’s lie 5th and 6th in the Championship and their strong performances in Korea have probably helped them keep 4th place in the Constructors safe from Sauber. Bomeny has an outside chance of winning the title while Mathershaw is level on points with Red Bull’s Graham.
The final two shock candidates for the title still are the two Saubers, Chan and Varga. With both being nearly 100 points behind Franklin though, it’s hard to see any scenario other than them being eliminated from the battle tonight.
India generally has a hot climate, and the dry weather and favoured track should suit Downton down to a tee as he looks to take the fight to his teammate.
This is the RFCG though, and ANYTHING could happen…*
