Official Qantas Australian Grand Prix Preview
Once again Albert Park hosts the Opening round of the Random Forum Championship Game, where the inaugural Champion, Felipe Bomeny, looks to begin the defence of his title with a win for Ferrari. He is once again partnered by Robert Mathershaw, who will be hoping for a stronger and more reliable season so he can challenge his teammate for the title.
Out of the top 4 teams, only Jamie Franklin (Lotus) and Hollis Graham (Red Bull) remain with their teams, and will be hoping this continuity will allow them to challenge Ferrari. McLaren have an all new line-up in Nic Morley and Peter Varga, while two of last season’s Championship Challengers, William Ingram and Johnny Kingshark have moved to Williams in a surprise move. It may pay off however, as the team have looked good in testing with strong their strong driver pairing. The sixth Championship challenger coming into the final round has made an even more shocking decision. Bradley Downton declared not long after the season finished that he would be joining new team Pagani, in a bid to pull them up the field quickly.
On the note of team changes, we have a few as we head to Melbourne for the second time. Vijay Mallya decided to rename the team after himself so Force India become Mallya Racing, while Infiniti dropped their sponsorship of Red Bull and instead brought out Toro Rosso so they can have their own team. With the demise of HRT (very much expected even from halfway through last season), Spyker make a return to the sport in their place. We also have two new teams taking the total number of drivers to 28 as Ford and Pagani will both make their debuts in Australia. We have a mass field, and a number of driver changes, meaning this season could be even more open than the last.
