Interview with Shane Butler
Q – First off, congrats on the 8th place. You looked like you were driving really hard in that race. How was it from your point of view?
SB – Yeah it was a very tough race and it was tricky to keep the car on track at times. I think I was fortunate to benefit from others misfortune but I still think it was a solid drive and I’m happy to get a points finish in the first race, especially with the tricky conditions. But for sure, we are setting our sights on better things and we need to improve our car.
Q – Pre-season, many were thinking that the Mercedes would be a better car in qualifying trim than in the race, as was the case last year, but it seems to be the other way around this time. Were you expecting a little more pace in quali, having only finished 13th?
SB – Yes I was disappointed with our pace in qualifying. I think from testing, we were expecting a little more so its disappointing to see where we were on the grid. But I suppose in Formula One nowadays, you see that different tracks and temperatures can benefit one team more than another, so you never really know who will be strong in the next race. Let’s just hope that Malaysia can be a good weekend for the team.
Q – You looked determined to get past Ben Needham in the final few laps, just managing to do it with 3 laps remaining. How did that feel?
SB – It was tough to get past but in the end, it was a great feeling and what made the pass even more enjoyable was that it was fully wet at the time. Australia is a tough place to overtake so I was happy to gain some places from my starting position.
Q – Finally, it looks set to be another wet weekend in Malaysia. So what will your goals be going into the second race?
SB – I think another solid points finish would be great, but most of all, we definitely want to see an improvement in our pace.
