I am expecting to be average in qualifying, reasonable in the race. Overall, not as competitive as the first two races.

…But this is the Collantine Cup. Anything can happen.

    DISCONNECTGATE
Controversy after Bradley and Ollie not allowed to race

So, Quali, 13 drivers dry, excellent. I was slowly improving each lap, and was the last across the line, taking 7th on the grid, the inside.

But controversy, after both Ollie and Bradley disconnected. All drivers deliberated other whether to let them race. Many solutions were put forward; a Safety Car start, allow them to start at the back, but it was decreed and many agreed that the Collantine Cup hadn’t done such a thing before and wouldn’t today.

    Race: 4th
So, with just 11 drivers the race begun and I got a good start, taking 6th, and awake enough to avoid a first lap crash. I stayed ahead of my team mate and drivers spun in front of us, allowing me into second. I had decent fights with both Brooksy and JF between now and lap 20 ish. I pitted on lap 10, not realising that was also my team mates strategy, and so he got held up in the pits. Apologies.

Primes were the wrong tyre for the second stint as rain came out halfway through, and it was time to choose a wet tyre. Most drivers opted for inters, but it quickly became apparent that wets were needed. Sometime here, I got passed by JF and was pushed down to 3rd, and my pedals disconnected, losing me more time than I gained cutting turn 1 and getting a penalty. I’d like to say I was having a good fight with teo but I was terrified that I was going to crash into him the whole time. Thankfully, both were respectful and no crashing occured.

However, I did have a bit of trouble with Electro in the Sauber, possibly costing me third, and sorted in the chat afterwards. Electro was flying, but a lap down, and attempted to pass me. I tried to let him through, aware that he was lapped, and he went through cleanly. The blue flags probably got him as he let me back past. I was forced to brake hard at one stage to avoid a collision – luckily I lost almost no time. The major incident occurred when I locked up, trying to get past teo and a lapped Williams, and was tapped by Electro, spinning me.

Now down, a number of seconds behind Teo, I tried to make it to the end of the race cleanly and came 4th. Good race, and great race for Ferrari, 27 points.

A completely uneventful, dull race for everyone.

Time to forget it and look forward to Monaco on the 13th of January.

Well @magnificent-geoffrey you couldn’t have been much more wrong…

I qualified 4th, which was better than I was expecting. Simply haven’t been able to get to grips with this track!

With the race, it was 45% chance of rain. We were in for a treat…I must apologise hugely to @shyguy1992 whom I clipped exiting turn 2 at the start, enough to send him into a spin. A similar thing happened later on, but that was a bit more bizarre – suddenly (literally) I had a Williams on my bonnet (green helmet?) and thus I let him back past later on in the lap, thinking I’d done enough damage for one day!

My pace was much better than expected – and when my tyres were right, and I had clean air, I was on it! However my whole inters period went completely tits up. Completely. I came in WAY too early for them (like @BROOKSY007 :P). There was so much rain falling, but the ground was staying so dry!

By the time it was wet enough, it was time for full-wets, not inters, and thus I endured a gruelling lap to the pits. By this stage I’d been lapped.

Towards the end of the race I found I was unlapping myself. I had slr and the two Ferraris in front of me, and it was hard not passing them! I found trivran (@alfie) was going slow enough for me to pass, and we both locked up at the hairpin one lap and, although, gently, my nudge was enough to send him off pretty far. So sorry for that!

All in all I got enough penalties and paid my dues, and 5th I’ve got to be happy with. Montreal was always going to be the chink in my armour, and I’m glad it’s out of the way…

Sorry to my teammate, @bradley13 who got his disconnect :(

    Quali: 1st
Amidst the controversy of ‘disconnectgate’ I was able to take pole today by just under 4 tenths from Damon. Hadn’t really expected to be that quick to be honest, and I think even on primes (Which I had done my first run on) it would have been enough for second, which is even more surprising. Still, happy to take my first pole of the season!

    Race: Provisional 1st
The race was very up and down for me. The start was great, but I still had Damon on my tail, and he seemed a little bit better in the opening laps, especially when I spun on lap (4?), which would have only put me down to second, but somehow I span a second time, which pushed me down to 7th, I think.
However, despite that little mistake, my pace was good, and I was able to set the fastest lap of the race. Little did I know at the time that that would be as fast as I would ever go. After a few passing moves, I was up to 4th, and able to take 3rd from @Brooksy007. @Alfie was a little bit harder to pass, but I think I was able to take him with the aid of DRS. I started trying to hunt down @CommonMonsoon but our pace was relatively equal at this point.
I pitted for options on lap 10 (Though in hindsight I would have pitted a lap earlier), knowing full well that the rain would be arriving soon.
It eventually did, and with a little bit of confidence in my grip levels, I was able to eat into Damon’s lead a little.
Can’t remember which lap it was, but I pitted for inters (Possibly a lap earlier than Damon), but for every bit I gained, another mistake was made. I think I had gained something like 7 seconds on him, until a Lotus on slicks span behind me as I was passing him, and took me out, putting the gap back up to 17-18 seconds.
Eventually pitted for wets (Spinning as I came out), but I was still languishing behind, not losing or gaining anything on the lead. Not until the rain started to ease up anyway. It’s possible that I came in a lap too early for inters, but with an extra lap’s knowledge under my belt, I completed the lap, and saw Damon fly out of the pits, only 4 seconds ahead. Not sure how I had gained so much, or if he had done an accidental extra stop…
Anyway, I appeared to be a bit quicker at this point, and I was able to get passed, with only a few laps to go. The weather continued to ease up, and I was actually considering putting another set of Options on, but I didn’t want to risk it, with Damon so close. On lap (33, I think) I was hit from behind, probably a lag issue, and was sent into the gravel, Damon too was in the gravel.
He was a little quicker, but I was able to keep the lead, until the end of sector 1 on the final lap, where I felt a punt from behind, spinning me around. I originally had thought that this was why Damon had received his penalty (That or the first tap from behind I had felt). Despite this, I was able to finish with 10 seconds of Damon, and take the win.

It was a great race, and there was definitely lag between myself and Damon. Obviously the win would be nice, considering I didn’t get any penalties :P but I’m open for a discussion on the matter. Yet more controversy to add to ‘disconnectgate’ ;)

    Good race! :D

@jamiefranklinf1 What was the pole time?

  • Profile picture of JamieFranklinF1 JamieFranklinF1 said 4 months, 3 weeks ago:

@Olliekart – I think it was a 1:12.3xx (I’m sure someone had a video that will show the exact time).

  • Profile picture of Silverkeg Silverkeg said 4 months, 3 weeks ago:

Firstly, I’m REALLY sorry to everyone who disconnected, especially @olliekart and @Bradley13 whom unfortunately is yet to make his Collantine Cup debut.

Secondly, I would like to apologise for how long it took to get the race started, obviously it was a difficult situation where no matter what decision was made, someone would have been left unhappy

    Thirdly, Williams got points!!

First of all, I’m happy with second. I know that it probably should have been a win, but I wouldn’t be the first to have been affected by silly penalties and I won’t be the last. After all, I got a win after @aus_steve‘s was taken from him through no fault of his own.

The first penalty was probably for something legitimate, even if it didn’t happen on my side of the world. This has happened before and, as such, I don’t think it should be overturned.

The second was when @Spud and I had a slight misunderstanding (bound to happen, especially when we’re dealing with considerable amounts of lag) and we came together. I’m sorry if I cost you some time there. And I’m sorry it cost me 10 seconds plus a 10 second penalty!

It won’t affect the outcome of today’s race, but can I propose that from now on, providing there is video evidence (otherwise people could just say their penalties are from incidents while passing lapped runners, even if there was an incident that wasn’t penalised) and that there was no malicious intent, penalties earned through misunderstandings/incidents with lapped cars be overturned? This could get messy as not everyone records their race, but obviously Spud and I weren’t doing anything wrong and we weren’t even racing each other.
