Been doing a bit of research on our lag issues to see if there’s a workaround and, unfortunately, it appears everyone is having similar issues and no-one from Codemasters has tried to fix it. It’s odd, because I remember we could have very clean battles in our inaugural season with F1 2010 (well, a lot more than in ’11 and ’12!). Although the cars were still twitchy back then, we didn’t really have any issues with cars not syncing up to where they are from other players’ perspectives.
Anyway, here’s an example of the Aus/UK-lag problem. Although the two players were connecting from the same country, it’s exactly the issue we’ve been experiencing (and I guess it’s heightened by the distance). Unfortunately, it seems that if you’re close to the host, you get a better start. And it explains why us Australian players are always swamped at the start no matter how clean our launch is!
But people using Steam to play on PC appear to be developing ways of getting around the issue. There’s a comment in this video describing how some of them are trying new things to improve connection between players when racing online. I know that’s Steam-specific, but does anyone clever/knowlegeable know if there are similar things we could experiment with on the PS3? It’s a shame we can’t race and I’d be annoyed if @JamieFranklinF1 and I don’t get to have at least one clean battle before the end of the season! That fight I had with @sato113 in Singapore really made me think and it was a lot of fun. Despite everything being clean, we did have to be ridiculously cautious to the point where I wasn’t sure if he was letting me through or if he was simply taking a different line which allowed me to get alongside without him knowing.
tl;dr — I think it’s time to accept I know nothing about internet connections and their many problems. Perhaps someone clever is lurking…
