So, the other day, I jokingly tweeted to @magnificent-geoffrey about running the Collantine Cup on Gran Turismo 5. Admittedly, this had come on the back of me doing particularly well (I thought), in some shuffle races, and a proper event I’m competing in with the Really Rubbish Racing crew. While I was only joking around at the time, I have thought about it a bit more and I think there might be a merit to running Season 4 on GT5. I’ve asked Mag about this and he has said I can use the thread to post my thoughts on it. I’d be interested to hear any feedback from anyone who, erm, has any feedback. Obviously, this is still Mag’s event, and I wouldn’t want to make it seem like I’m trying to take over or anything, but I think the discussion could be worth having. The decision, in the end, will be Mag’s, and whatever he decides to do, I’ll be cool with it.
I’ll start with some pros and cons.
- Contains 5 current, and some other tracks that aren’t on the calendar. Real life F1 tracks. Suzuka, Nürburgring, Monza, Monaco & Spa (DLC). F1 tracks no longer on the calendar, but are in the game are Fuji, Indianapolis. Obviously the newer F1 tracks aren’t on GT5, but similar circuits could be used as a substitute.
- Lag would appear to be a lot less of a problem with GT5. At least, it is from what I can see.
-The option of having boost set to low gives a great opportunity to guys who are not as quick, to get in the mix, if they do happen to fall back for whatever reason. I think that the fastest guys will still come to the fore, but this way, it’s the same for everyone, and everyone can have a fair go. And it’ll result in more wheel to wheel racing I think.
-Cars parts still fully adjustable too, so if you are into setting up your car just so, that option is available. Same goes for weather settings.
-In my experience, there aren’t really that many disconnections in GT5 lobbies.
-Obviously, this isn’t an F1 game, and while there 3 F1 style cars here, two of them are Ferrari cars, and one is a Formula Gran Turismo. So to drive for your favourite F1 team, you will just have to, erm, pretend…
-Unfortunately, you can’t change the colour or race number of your car, so if we were to race under the names of our respective favourite F1 teams, a little imagination is required.
-Only one of the cars have post 2009 body work, but this car is a Ferrari, and I can think of a few who wouldn’t like to race in that particular car, me being one of them.
-DRS and KERS aren’t in the game either, and there is no sign of Pirelli either. While I think the lack of DRS and KERS might be an issue, the lack of any Pirelli signage isn’t really much of a big deal.
-If you don’t have the Gran Turismo, or F1 cars, it can take some time to Level up to the point to where you can actually get to the cars we’d need for this to happen. This includes needing a licanse, or earning the actual cash to buy the cars.
As we all know by now, Codies are bringing out F1 2013 soon, which will be completely up to date of course, apart from the dodgy driver decisions for the classic cars, but I won’t go into that. So that’s an option. I do have a personal opinion on this, and I’m not trying to influence anyone else here, but here’s how I feel about it myself.
I’ve competed in Collantine Cup for 2 seasons now. It has been immense fun, and it’s a pleasure to take part. The fact remains for me though, is that it’s really the only time I play the F1 series of games. They don’t do a very good job in holding my interest like GT5 did and still does. So to be honest, I’m a tad reluctant to spend the guts of €70 on a game I will play for 3ish months and then cast it to one side. I’m even more reluctant to spend that money on a game I’ll play very little of, when GT6 is coming for Christmas and the PS4 is imminent also. I’d rather part with my cash for those.
I’ll whisht with the waffling now. Again, this is Mag’s series, so any decision will be made by him and nobody else, but I thought I’d share my thoughts and get a bit of a discussion going. What started off as a jokey tweet, has began to have some real merit, so I’d like to hear what you all think.
