One of the many things that this championship has highlighted for me is my near complete inability to setup a car effectively. A fair chunk of the speed gap is down to skill (massive credit to the podium finishers this weekend for maintaining both pace and concentration), but I still feel that the setup is a significant factor too. When I look at some of the other videos it does almost feel that they are driving different cars, but again I’m also probably lacking commitment into the corners.
I think in Malaysia, as well as being generally poor at that track, my setup was actually worse than if I’d not touched the default settings at all. With Brazil and Monaco it has been a bit clearer on which way to go, but I expect to struggle again at Spa. That said, my Monaco setup, combined with my less than smooth driving style and heavy right foot did destroy my tyres.
It’s tricky to know exactly where I stand before a race though as the only benchmark I have to measure against is the AI which I’m usually comfortably faster than.
Still, I’m having a lot of fun in the races and it really is a pleasure to race with a bunch of fine, fast and fair racers which is completely different to what you usually get online. I think the main area I can improve in though are my general driving skills and trying to cut down on the mistakes. Would be great to be in the mix for a podium position in the last three rounds.
