So, what was the very first racing game you ever played?

Truth is, my first racing game experience was free and came in a Frosted Kellogg’s cereal box.

For people who may not know what I’m talking about, it’s this game:

Considering that the game is over 10 years old, and was free, from a $2.50 cereal box, it was surprisingly good. Hell, the AI was probably more intelligent than Codemasters’ F1 2012.

Although the game came out in 2002, the names and teams suggest that it was based of the 1997 F1 season. Although obviously, because of copyright, the real names of drivers and teams weren’t used.

My second game was another cheap but good one. Viper Racing.

A classic. Early childhood memories.

The first racing game I played was either Geoff Crammond’s GP2 or GP3 (I think the former). The first racing game I played extensively was GP4 from the same series. I was pretty terrible at it (I was only 8 or something at the time, to be fair), and played with brake assist and all those silly things. Several years later I got quite addicted to F1 2010, and got pretty decent at it (this time with zero assists). I still play F1 2012 from time to time, but lack of practice has made me pretty clumsy, except on Spa and Montréal, which I’ve spent countless hours on.

My first ACTUAL racing game was an Al Unser Jr. Indycar game for PC way back in 98′ or so. I never played it much because I didn’t know anything about it.
What I consider my first true racing game was Gran Turismo 3. I instantly fell in love with the GT40 and the 787B, as well as the F687/S (while looking it up on the internet, I found out about Ayrton Senna).
GT3 is still the origin of my interest in racing.

First racing game that I played was F1 2000, EA Sports. The resolution is very poor (even for its time), but the actual driving is very realistic. I never worked out how you’re supposed to make a pit-stop: an average pit stop is 40 seconds or so. Also Jaguar’s pace is hugely overestimated: they finish on the podium regularly, something they didn’t even come close to in real life. I actually play this game on my old computer from time to time if I’m in a nostalgic mood.

Have you noticed that the guy in the video BRAKES before Eau Rouge?

Toca 2 was my first ever racing game, it was also the very first game I ever had. First Formula 1 game was F1 05, which actually started my addiction to Formula 1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyyOU_N2hOw

Super Hang-On, on the Sega Mega Drive.

In terms of car racing, it was F1 World Grand Prix on the N64.

I know, the graphics just blow you away.

Countless other racers followed on various machines but the first one to truly grab my attention was Geoff Crammond’s epic F1GP on the Amiga, which will forever be the game that consumed the most hours of my life.

Great thing about the game was it had an edit mode, where you could create your very own track. Was awesome! Plus, that sound it makes when passing another car is properly awesome :P

@andae23 you need to request the pit stop at the beginning of your inlap, so the crew would be ready for you in time. Then you’d have a stop under 10 seconds.

Does anyone remember in F1 2000, the final corner at Magny-Cours? Literally every driver spins there, quite funny.

My first racing game was Rad Racer on the NES when I must have been about 5.

Made by Square (of Final Fantasy fame) and similar to games like Sega’s ‘Outrun’, it was a point-to-point road-rally game where you’d drive a Ferrari along a 3 lane highway in an attempt to reach the end before the time ran out, via checkpoints which topped up your time. Each course was set in a different location (countryside, canyon, city, etc) and featured a different model of car you’d encounter on the course. As you can see in the video, the first level had you avoiding VW Beetles.

There was also an option to choose a late-1980′s F1 car to race instead of the Ferrari. It was yellow like the Camel Lotus.

There was a game I played loads on the SNES which was very similar by the name of Lamborghini American Challenge, which featured the same 3-lane highway road race, but against other Lamborghinis. You could upgrade your car, place bets with other drivers, and had to avoid the police and speed cameras. Brilliant game.

I can’t remember exactly what my first racing game was, but it’s between TOCA Touring Car Championship & Colin McRae Rally, both on the PC.

I remember the easter eggs in TOCA, such as “Cats & Dogs”, where it would literally rain cats & dogs. There was also a couple of codes where you could drive a Cadillac and a tank, and there was a hidden track called Lavaland.

Mine was F1 2005 and NFS Most Wanted on my lovely PS2, and then I bought NFS Shift and this years’ F1 game on PC.
