I thought in light of the current see-sawing championship I’ve decided to revive this old thread I did, just for the hell of it.

    Senna – 5
    Kobayashi – 3
    Grosjean – 3
    di Resta – 2
    Vergne – 1
    Maldonado – 1

    After Bahrain
    Vettel – 22
    Webber – 20
    Hamilton – 19
    Button – 18
    Alonso – 16
    Rosberg – 14
    Raikkonen – 14
    Perez – 9
    Grosjean – 9
    Senna – 5
    di Resta – 5
    Kobayashi – 3
    Vergne – 1

Can you update to show the 2012 points in parenthesis as a reference.

I didn’t put it up there because honestly it wouldn’t make much difference – there’s not much to be seen there, but what IS interesting is how the placements would change between old and new points systems. Such as Button in China being joint leader with Lewis, and how Alonso wouldn’t be equal on points with Vettel (as of this post)

    Constructors:
    1. Red Bull – 45
    2. Mclaren – 38
    3. Lotus – 34
    4. Ferrari – 24
    5. Mercedes – 16
    6. Williams – 16
    7. Sauber – 12
    8. Force India – 5
    9. Toro Rosso – 1

Interestingly, Alonso and Rosberg would be the only ones to have scored for their teams so far this year. Likewise, the new point system doesn’t truly allow us to acknowledge how close this season really is.

Yeah – the thing is, because all of the points in the new system are more, basically the gap gets multiplied along with the points (basic algebra: 2X-2Y = 2 x (X-Y)

Hamilton loses out a fair bit in the old system.

@matt90 what makes you say that?

He’s gone to 5 points behind instead of 8- from 1/3 of a race win behind to 1/2. It isn’t as big a drop as I thought admittedly, although it does put him also level with another 2 drivers.

Interesting that the top 3 are equal and Rosberg equal to Hamilton.

Percentage wise Button is probably about equal to under the 2012 points

Yes the differences mainly come out if you’ve come in 2nd place before – and also if you’ve come in 9th or 10th. Otherwise it’s pretty much the same all the way through.

I honestly miss the old point system. Getting P 9 or 10 is too much of a gift for points imo. Also, the championship looks much closer with the older system.

2003-09 point system all the way imo.

EDIT: Wow, I just realized that, had we used the 2003-09 point system today, Schumacher would yet have to score a point this year! Truly shows what awful the luck of a dog’s he’s had this season.

Whether or not it’s close, we have to apply a multiple of 2.5 to normalise.

    Here:
    Alonso – 75 (76)
    Vettel – 75 (73)
    Webber – 75 (73)
    Rosberg – 60 (59)
    Hamilton – 60 (63)
    Raikkonen – 50 (51)
    Button – 45 (45)
    Grosjean – 35 (35)
    Maldonado – 27.5 (29)
    Perez – 22.5 (22)
    Kobayashi – 17.5 (19)
    di Resta – 17.5 (21)
    Senna – 12.5 (15)
    Massa – 7.5 (10)
    Hulkenberg – 2.5 (7)
    Vergne – 2.5 (4)

Once again, the old system proves to give a closer result than the new system. I really wish that we never moved away from the 2003-09 system.

It’d be cool if you put the ranking up for each driver too.
