Toro Rosso – 130th July 2013, 11:29 at 11:29 am #227853Iestyn DaviesParticipantActually it’s closer than I imagined it would be.. I really want to see the list of all the champion changes that would have occurred with different points systems! I remember seeing it in F1 live coverage when we changed to the current system. I like how Button kept referring to “what’s that in old money?” during the first season or two haha.
30th July 2013, 13:36 at 1:36 pm #227854MatthijsParticipantI think it is a good thing that the point system changed in 2010. With the three new teams and the improved reliability it’s hardly impossible for a small team to finish in the top 8 (let alone the top 6 in the pre-2003 system).
However, I do think there are not enough points rewarded for a win. Don’t get me wrong, 25 points is a lot, but it’s not even 25% of all the points awarded and it can almost be overhauled with two fourth places. In the pre-2003 system (10-6-4-3-2-1), the winner scored close to 40% of all the available points and one had to score a second and a third place to equal that number of points.
30th July 2013, 14:28 at 2:28 pm #227855David-AParticipantWith 4 wins, 1 2nd, 2 3rds, 2 4ths, Vettel would be on 60 points on the 10-6-4-3-2-1 system.
30th July 2013, 15:47 at 3:47 pm #227856the_sigmanParticipant@david-a I’m sorry, thanks for telling me!
31st July 2013, 4:05 at 4:05 am #227857Iestyn DaviesParticipantI see what you are saying Matthijs, and in this case, the championship is now more weighted to not making any major mistakes – you are well rewarded for always being on the podium, and this is what Vettel has subsequently done. Ferrari should have borne this in mind in Malaysia, but they wanted to be more aggressive, as they felt they have played safe too much too recently to really clinch a championship, and this bit them hard. I’ll admit, if the wing could have stayed on for a few laps then they could have easily been on the podium, rather than guarantee a mid points finish.
In the past, you really had to take victories to haul yourself into contention. 2003 showed the future somewhat in that Raikkonen was consistently on the podium, and was in the end unlucky not to take the title – I feel Montoya would have edged it if not for more retirements than him and MSc.
