If the rumour about 8 3-car teams in 2015 is true, as is claimed by a number of sources, that would throw the silly season into overdrive. What do you think the line-up would look like? Here’s my wild guess:

Teams to fold: Caterham, Marussia, Lotus

    – Mercedes
    Hamilton
    Rosberg
    Hulkenberg

    – Red Bull
    Vettel
    Ricciardo
    Kvyat

    – Ferrari
    Alonso
    Raikkonen
    Bianchi

    – Williams
    Bottas
    Massa
    Nasr

    – McLaren
    Button
    Magnussen
    Vandoorne

    – Force India
    Perez
    Grosjean
    ? (Palmer?)

    – Toro Rosso
    Verstappen
    Sainz
    Gasly

    – Sauber
    Gutierrez
    van der Garde
    de Silvestro

Maybe with HUL and GRO reversed.

I loathe the idea, for the record.

Mercedes: Hamilton / Rosberg / Di Resta
Red Bull: Ricciardo / Vettel / Vergne
Williams: Bottas / Massa / Nasr
Ferrari: Alonso / Raikkonen / Bianchi
McLaren: Button / Magnussen / Vandoorne
Force India: Hulkenberg / Perez / Frijns
Toro Rosso: Kvyat / Sainz / Verstappen
Lotus: Grosjean / Maldonado / Palmer
[Sauber: Rossi / Van der Garde / De Silvestro]

Then again, the eighth team would not have the resources to run three cars, Force India and Toro Rosso could MAYBE run two teams – it’s a disgusting proposal that has more negative consequences to cancel out any good from some of these additions i.e. Jules at Ferrari.

    Force India: Perez, Hulkenberg, Juncadella

It’s as realistic and dull as my imagination let me :P

This 3-car team thing won’t happen in my opinion, but I like to play with the idea of the lineups.
Teams that could fold: Caterham, Lotus (Marussia won’t because of the WCC 9th place, Sauber won’t because Stroll will buy the team)

Which would obviously mean the last driver in Q1 would not qualify (as 26 cars are the maximum), with the top 10 drivers in FP3 being safe in case if they can’t do a timed lap because of a technical problem.

    Mercedes: Hamilton, Rosberg, Wickens
    Red Bull: Vettel, Ricciardo, Vergne
    Ferrari: Alonso, Räikkönen, Bianchi
    McLaren: Button, Magnussen, Vandoorne
    Williams: Bottas, Massa, Nasr
    Force India: Perez, Hülkenberg, Palmer
    Toro Rosso: Kvyat, Verstappen, Sainz
Sauber: Gutierrez, van der Garde, de Silvestro
    Marussia: Chilton, Rossi, Marciello

Which then begs the question, what of 2015 and Haas?

Think that is my main stumbling point for this being in any way serious. If they are making this change then surely the need for another team is unfounded. And no team will want to go racing in F1 in this economy if they are not guaranteed to race, as exposure time is what the sponsors want. The backmarkers struggle enough for sponsors as is.

I really can’t see this happening. I think that yes, we may lose one team by the time Haas is here in 2015, but cannot see it being down to 8 and cannot see the return of the DNQ as standard in modern F1

I don’t think it will happen and I’ve always really disliked the idea. But the three teams most likely to pull out for me are Caterham, Marussia and Sauber (rather than Lotus).

    Mercedes – Rosberg, Hamilton, Bottas
Red Bull – Vettel, Ricciardo, Kvyat
    Williams – Massa, Vergne, Nasr
    Ferrari – Alonso, Raikkonen, Bianchi
    McLaren – Button, Magnussen, Vandoorne
Force India – Hulkenberg, Perez, Juncadella
Toro Rosso – Verstappen, Sainz, Gasly
    Lotus – Grosjean, Maldonado, Ocon

Worth to note Adam Parr said several and not all teams running 3 cars.

    Mercedes
    Rosberg
    Hamilton
    Bottas

    Red Bull
    Vettel
    Ricciardo
    Kvyat

    Williams
    Massa
    Grosjean

    Ferrari
    Alonso
    Raikkonen
    Hulkenberg

    McLaren
    Magnussen
    Vandoorne
    Button

    Force India
    Perez
    Gutierrez

    Toro Rosso
    Verstappen
    Sainz
    Gasly

    Sauber-Stroll
    Bianchi
    Stroll

This would leave 21 cars, enough for Haas to enter in 2016.

@BenH Haas will enter in 2016 – and probably only if they can run a Ferrari customer car, like Prodrive wanted to do with McLaren in 2008.

I think the teams threatened are Caterham, Marussia and Lotus, who haven’t paid up to secure 2015 Mercedes engines just yet. Sauber can be saved by Stroll. But, if he doesn’t buy them and Lotus pay for the engines in early 2015, Sauber could be struggling to continue.
