This my very cynical opinion: How about we freeze all engine development for the next couple of years for all engines, but Mercedes have to put some sort of power limiter on their engine? (All other Mercedes powered teams would avoid this as they do not have vital Key to unlock the same performance as the factory team).

Mercedes have said on numerous occasions that they do not want the engines to unfreeze because of the costs impacting the smaller teams, well this way wouldn’t cost a dime and the other cars and engine manufacturers can catch up without them spending a dime either.

    Everybody wins the end.

Well that got me thinking but if that was the case the Sport wouldn’t be F1 anymore would it?

Even Easier than that, let the engine manufacturers do what they want and cap the cost of engine supply to the customer teams as it was with the old V8’s

@carlos-santos No it wouldn’t but F1 isn’t very F1 right now as it is, especially with stupid gimmicks like Abu Double and DRS in my opinion. It’s not very F1 to get behind the smaller teams when they are going under either but people seem to be doing that, I don’t remember this many people upset when HRT decided to call it a day.

    I like this idea!

Agree with @asanator. If Mercedes still wanted to pile in $500m, despite only being able to charge $10m per season for engines, that would have been their choice to get winning PR for a substantial R&D investment.

This happened anyway, only with the price they ask tripled…. and yet they are the cheapest engine!?
Perhaps this is from knowing that they’ll always have 3 customer teams..

Renault could really pull out if Red Bull decide to go the Cosworth bespoke route, leaving Renault high and dry. If Honda are better than Ferrari, then they could undercut them to get the smaller teams, when they open up for some ROI.

@giggsy11 agree with a multi-year engine freeze, but not in favour of a special restriction for Merc. They followed the same rules as everyone else, and came up with a better engine than them all. They should not be penalised for doing a better job.

@junior-pilot I agree but why should Renault and Ferrari get penalised for not having another chance to get it right? Unless you are a Merc/Hmilton/Rosberg fan, who is going to enjoy another processional season that only two guys can win with no other teams having the slightest chance to even compete? Hell, the only reason why people aren’t complaining about a dominant team is because Hamilton and Rosberg are very close on form, if you put in a number 1 and 2 driver this season would have been a snooze-fest ala 2011.

Merc did an outstanding job and even with an engine change they will probably still be on top but we have to give the other manufacturers a chance otherwise F1 just becomes predictable and boring.

@giggsy11 valid point, but surely creating an artificial means for them to catch up is yet another case of meddling? Yes the Mercs have been dominant but the racing has been superb in 2014 – even traditionally dull races like Bahrain have been exciting.

And surely the point of an engine freeze was to cut costs – and already we are looking at loopholes?

@junior-pilot The engine freeze was put into place before the engines were even made, if the Mercs had a small advantage we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now. However their advantage is huge, there has been times this year where they have been nearly a second faster than everyone else. The worst part is, with an engine freeze there is absolutely no chance for anyone to catch up; at least in recent years when aero was the priority area you had the chance to start over the next year.

For a lot of British fans the engine freeze suits them very well as Hamilton would be nailed on to win the championship for the next few years, Rosberg is good but the only reason this year has gone down to the wire is due to mechanical problems for Lewis and you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that disagrees with that.

I’m not going to sit and complain if the rules remain the same as its nice to see someone other than Red Bull/Ferrari/McLaren win for a change but its going to become very dull after the 3rd championship in a row when no one can actually challenge.
