Honestly I think the only reason Alonso would say such a thing is as a bit pf psychological warfare in the hopes he can trip up Vettel and eek out any advantage possible. It shows the extent he feels threatened by Vettel, but I doubt it will do any good. Sebastian simply doesn’t care about such things.

@raymondu999 having seen alonso in interviews on tv for many years now, i think he meant it exactly that way.
he sees himself in a league with schumacher, prost and senna (that’s why he still says schumacher is the best in the grid), and above hamilton, for sure.

@todfod I think you need to see the total package. I think he ended up 4th, 5th and/or 6th a couple of times with the torro rosso in that year… that’s why 99% is already convinced he can do it. The 1% which is missing is because it’s still not proven yet that he can do it.

monaco 5th, Canada 8th, Germany 8th, Valencia 5th, Belgium (my home GP which is 1 of the most difficult circuits to handle) 5th, Italy obviously 1st, Singapore (also 1 of the most difficult circuits + the 1st time they raced there) 5th, Japan 6th, China 9th and finally Brazil (with the difficult G-forces) 4th

And don’t forget the 2009 season. He didn’t had the best car. Brawn GP had the best car. And yet still he won 4 times and had 4 polepositions… Ok so maybe brawn gp AND redbull had the best cars but for me, there can only be 1 best car.

Also note that he is still young, so I believe in it, I believe that he can do it in the future…

I think there is no doubt Seb can drive a car too, and beyond it’s deserved podium position. Just compare his 2011 performance to Mark Weber, who admittedly did suffer quite a lack lustre season.
With regards the 2009 season, Ok, the Brawn started out as the best car, mid season and onwards, very arguable I think.

What baffles me is the opinions on here stating that Lewis’s abilities can flatter his cars performance, and Jenson’s cannot. Have you been watching the two drivers this season? If anyone has flattered the car I would say it has been JB. 2010 barely anything between them.
Lets not forget 2004 in a BAR honda, 10 podiums…. 1 win even challenging Schumacher on occasions.
OK, granted JB is quite a fussy driver with regards to setup and balance. But what is that really saying? That is saying he is quicker when the car is set up too his liking. Wow shock horror…

There should be no doubt that Lewis Hamilton is a faster driver than Jenson Button, all the numbers are there to prove it. Even in qualifying this year he was an average of more than 0,2 seconds faster, which is a big average. Hamilton is faster, but Button is smarter and makes less mistakes.

OK, I could be slightly biased in that pre winter 1st test 2009 (brawn) I put a £30 bet on JB for the championship based on the fact that Brawn then has secured a Mercedes engine and started work on the car early 2008.

Any way after what I can describe as one of the most enthralling seasons I have ever watched (due to the above) i cashed in at 88-1

Let us not forget that the 2008 Torro Rosso was a Ferrari powered Redbull, not as it is now, the chassis was the Redbull chassis and was already a strong front of midfield car.

no it wasn’t @Asanator, at least not at the beginning of the season, where the Red Bull was much better. But at the end, the Toro Rosso had leaped ahead the Red Bull. I remember thinking that Vettel had made a bad choice with his move to the mother team, but it was with his arrival that the team started to win. So he won it first for both outfits.
And as a 17-year old first training session first place for BMW Sauber and in the points in the very first race? Youngest ever doublce WDC?
Not all a coincidence. This boy is special and it will be proven furthermore. Even his 2010 season that some criticise only had 2 or 3 bad moments in it…

With the dominant season he has had now including overtakings, he surely has a verry good shot at winning multiple times with a car that isn’t the best one… What hamilton/button can do, seb can do! he is the polemaster after all… and besides all this, what was alonso actually thinking? Sounds to me as if he was thinking about himself doing this all the time. What makes him so sure of being capable of doing this? he was 2 times world champion but also in the best car back then… If alonso would win without having the best car, well then why couldn’t he passed petrov who was in the slower car?

Yes it was marcio, Redbull co owned the team with Gerhard Berger until buying it outright in late 2008 and basically supplied the chassis while Ferrari supplied the engine, the ban on customer chassis by the (then) new concorde agreement was struck in mid 2008 and didn’t come into force in 2010. Torro Rosso took a better development path than redbull through out that year which is why their car improved faster than the Redbull. Ultimately out performing them. but they were based on the same chassis.

Vettel’s performances that year will also appear enhanced by his weak and perpetually under performing team mate.

None of which is to take away from what he has acheived since joining Redbull, his utter dominance of qualifying and so many races must be respected.

I really look forward to a possible (and not as unlikely as people believe) 2013 red bull team with vettel competing mano a mano with hamilton. that would be almost as exciting as senna x prost in 1988…

I’m looking forward to the next time a driver in only his first full season racing in F1 takes a car that ends up sixth in the constructors’ championship, puts it on pole, and wins a race in wet conditions. Because I’m looking forward to hearing again and again how unremarkable everyone finds that and how it really just came down to the weather and how *awesome* that car really was. (You know, kind of like when Hülkenberg got that pole position last season for Williams!)

I’m not trying to take away from what he has achieved in the sport, and his time at Torro Rosso was remarkable, more dispel some of the myth that the car he was driving was the tail end charlie some people seem to think it was. A little bit of balance if you will.

Underestimate him at your peril I say.
