Are we seeing a Vettel era? (66 posts)

Yes, but to prepare for Silverstone, they had put everything into setting up a hot-blowing map specially for Silverstone, only to be told they couldn’t use it – Mclaren then had 1 week to optimise a non-blowing setup so it was always going to be sup-par. There Silverstone setup was thrown together and rushed.

For 2012, the rules were known well in advance, and the team has had months to work on the new rear regulations. I’m sure a team as big as Mclaren will cope with the rule change – it is afterall fairly small compared to the huge rule change that caught them (and Ferrari, and BMW and Renault) out in 2009. This will be more like the DDD ban – the big 3 were able to cope with it.

I thought I’d share this here. It’s a video BBC put together of all back-to-back champions, they showed it to Vettel in the forum and it got a tear in his eye, seeing what company he’s got himself into. Clark, Stewart, Lauda, Piquet aren’t included, unfortunately, as they never won back-to-back titles.

Calum – I hear what you’re saying with Silverstone. However; consider this – the McLaren; since the 2009 regulation changes; have never been able to get a good level of downforce at the rear. The MP4-24 was a good car; were it not for the outwash front wing (or lack thereof) and lack of rear df too.

The MP4-25 used the F-duct to crank up a lot more rear wing; using the F-duct to offset the drag penalty of a massive wing instead.

The MP4-26 was nowhere in pre-season testing until they bolted on the Red Bull exhaust; and clearly that is running a lot of hot blowing. Also up to Hungary they have gone for a rear wing flap design different to all 11 other cars; sacrificing the drag reduction they get form DRS; but also increasing the amount of downforce the wing produced. Even HRT went for a bigger DRS effect; rather than the McLaren path of better downforce. It was only until Spa that they debuted their rear wing with more DRS effect; letting go of that better downforce.

Enigma – there are even less that have won 3 back to back; only Fangio and Schumacher have done that; and also very few triple world champions around, too!

Also; did anyone see Ted Kravitz’s “behind the scenes” pit lane piece? He talks about how very often this year; and even right after the celebrations have ended at Red Bull; Vettel was straight away talking with engineers and Adrian (Newey) about what had happened during the race and giving feedback; discussing possible improvements; and the direction their car should take.

    Here’s the vid those interested:

Very interesting video, and it brings up a good point, Ferrari, McLaren, etc. may all produce very good cars next year, but their drivers will have to up their game as well. Only Button has been able to keep Vettel honest lately.

Seb has all the momentum in the world right now, and if anyone in the field is capable of 3 WDCs in a row, it is him. I think he will do it.

That said, I surely hope somebody, anybody can keep up with RedBull next year, just to make it a little more interesting.
