So according to that, from the hairpin to the pier thing, through that sweeping left hander is very steeply downhill? or is it from before the hairpin and therefore the hairpin itself will also be steeply downhill? Either way, it looks dangerous, which means it looks exciting! :D

It’s difficult to say exactly, but I’m guessing that the section from the hairpin to that sweeper is where the most elevation is to be found.

Got a series of pictures from Mar del Plata, just to show you were the circuit would be: http://www.flickr.com/photos/76444316@N05/

The roundabout bit seems to be too tight for F1 cars, really. And too pointless, but I guess they need to slow the cars down because of the Eau Rouge-esque uphill right-left. On a street course, it’d be too dangerous!

The elevation changes really look great and it’d certainly be a pretty nice circuit… if the dream is realized.

BTW, @prisoner-monkeys I think Potrero de los Funes would make an excellent venue for F1. Even if the race is boring (which I doubt that’d be the case), the circuit itself is very nice and certainly better than others with much more flash and lights…

Why I’m not surprised that the circuit goes right past a pier/marina…?

I do like the basic layout, just don’t like the fiddly bits added. But the gradient changes might make up for it. And it does look very pretty.

@guilherme – Does it matter where the circuit is set if it provides good racing?

I am with @matt90 here, the track actually does not look to bad. I would hope that as @prisoner-monkeys writes, Tilke would look at the need for those chicanes and ditch at least that one before the steeply uphill bend.

And off course the strange supertight roundabout appendix should go, maybe have it for putting in an extra grandstand for the golfclub members instead. Thanks for those pictures @fer-no65, it really shows what it would look there.
Lets hope someone does a lap simulation of it, like they did for the new jersey track. To me these tracks look a bit of the same mould, acutally

I would hope that as @prisoner-monkeys writes, Tilke would look at the need for those chicanes and ditch at least that one before the steeply uphill bend.

I’m guessing that chicane before the steep uphill bend is there because the next corner is a steep uphill bend without any run-off. If a car crashed at speed, it could potentially flip over the fencing, and there would be a world of trouble.

I’m still a little sceptical about these plans, though. The roundabout is not only completely necessary, there’s actually only one road in. It would have to be divided in two to fit a Formula 1 car, which means it would literally be single-file through that section because the road would only be wide enough for one car at a time. And I don’t think the FIA would ever agree to that.

Hm, you are probably right about that chicane @prisoner-monkeys, wouldn’t want to see a car launched into the grandstand/houses at the top of that bend.

About the roundabout it really is a bit like just a road to the golf club with a circle to turn the limo’s / taxi’s bringing everyone rather than a normal roundabout with a road going in, very tight and a bit of a bump in front of it as well according to this picture.

But the chicane at the start of that straight looks to be pretty useless, unless it would run the other way around, but then the roundabout would be sheer folly at the end of a pretty long straight.

@bascb – It doesn’t matter how bumpy or tight it is. The issue is the width of the circuit. When Sueprleague Formula was racing in Beijing last year, the circuit failed its homologation for a Grade-2 licence because a section of the circuit was too narrow. It was wider than this road would be. There is no way this could pass a Grade-2 licencing, must less Grade-1.

I guess they need a section there to slow the cars down and they thought: “well, there’s the roundabout” and just went for it. After all, without the roundabout, it’d be like Eau Rouge but maybe steeper and on a street track: not good.

I guess if they do sign the contract with Bernie next month, we’ll have a better trackmap available. Maybe a revised one.

Video: first simulation of the circuit on rFactor. The modder surely did it quickly but not very well…

Still, it’s a good first glimpse, IF the track ends up being like that… which I doubt it, as otherwise it’d be certainly horrid.

“Well, at least it’s unique” some might say… well, I’m not that sure about that.

  • Profile picture of matt90 matt90 said 1 year, 1 month ago:

If they just changed the first sector- no need for the first 2 chicaney sections- and the roundabout I think it would look quite nice. As it is? Uninspiring for the most part.

  • Profile picture of Fer no.65 Fer no.65 said 1 year, 1 month ago:

The thing I dislike the most is that there’s just 1 real corner, which for an F1 car isn’t really a corner: the last one that goes downhill to the seabreaker.

Other than that it’s a chicane fest… and not a good one!
