Argentinean Grand Prix: the circuit in Mar del Plata (125 posts)

    @fer-no65

    A newspaper here talked to Bernie at Monaco and when asked about the possible race in Argentina, Bernie said: “I have no idea about it”

    I suppose both sides are in something of a holding pattern at the moment. The current Concorde Agreement only allows for 20 races, and so far there are 20 races set for 2013. There is a provision that would allow for up to four more, but it would require the agreement of the teams. I suppose that the organisers would want to wait and know for sure that there will be an available grid spot before committing to anything. The problem is that the longer they wait, the less time they will have to do the necessary work.

    It’s been very quiet in the last month or so, and even the other day at the official presentation of the MotoGP race in Argentina for 2013 they said: “It’s going to be the biggest sporting event of the year”.

    Can you really blame them for saying that? I’m guessing the MotoGP promoters are not the same organisation as the Formula 1 promoters, so they’re hardly going to say “It’s going to be the second-biggest sporting event of the year”. Even if they are the same group, it still makes no sense for them to say it.

    It’s the goverment that’s pushing for both events (MotoGP and F1), and when asked about F1, they said nothing.

    It happened before in 2009, so there’s a precedent… it could be all talk no play.

    People were asking about it yesterday when the 2013 calendar was announced, so I guess it’s relevant.

    Apparently, Mar del Plata is still pushing for the race, only that they now want to have it in 2014 (obviously). They said: “we’re working very hard” to get F1 “racing in the city in 2014″.

    The people from Mar del Plata are “still in talks”, and asked about why Cristina Fernandez officially announced the race back in May and no one ever heard of it again until now they said: “We must present an offer to the FIA and the complete circuit, things that are not yet”… “all that would be funded by the state but recoverable (which could be sponsors or investors) to start the work that FIA requests to establish Mar del Plata with a street circuit on the coast in one of the dates in the 2014 calendar”

    At the same time, radical Councilman Mario Rodriguez elevated a proyect which requests the Executive Department to report the measures and efforts done and to be completed.

    So basically… nothing.

    Sounds like they’ve manufactured a neat little Catch-22 for themselves – Scenario A cannot happen without Condition B taking place first, but Condition B cannot take place without Scenario A happening first. In this case, they claim they can’t start construction until they get a provisional start date, but they won’t get a date until they start construction. It’s a pre-fabricated excuse that they can use when the race does not materialise.

    Yas Marina is an amazing track. Give a single reason why you don’t like it.

    And as far as Mar del Plata: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5751936
