Wow, much as I admire Moss, I think him being ahead of Stewart is a bit of a stretch. They do have a similar percentage of wins at least. I don’t think Stewart’s contributions to the sport should be noted here though. If it is about the greatest drivers, it should be about how good they were as drivers- it is the same reason why Brabham shouldn’t get bonus points for being a team owner, and winning for his own team.

I think Jackie Stewart should have been no. 4 or 5 on this list, at least above Schumacher. Jackie Stewart was a fantastic driver, just like Schumacher. But if you look at what Stewart has done for the sport, I think you should take that into account as well. So Schumacher has won 7 titles (some convincingly, some questionably), but what has he ever done for the sport?

Schumacher recovered Ferrari from a 21 year slump and brought it back to greatness; something not even other great Ferrari drivers of that time such as G Villeneuve, Mansell or Prost couldn’t accomplish. Without Schumacher, Ferrari probably wouldn’t even have been in Formula One today.

This is where I have to ask, what exactly have Senna, Prost, Clark, Fangio or Moss ever really done for F1?

It’s not as though Schumacher decided to save ferrari out of the goodness of his heart. He wanted to bring a group of people together so he could win, then dominate, at a team comitted to the sport and with huge resources. Ferrari wouldn’t have quit F1 without Schumacher. They’d come 3rd for the previous 2 seasons, with a win each year. None of that suggests a team about to give in.

I am quite confused why, when I read this and the comments, why everyone assumes that Moss will appear in the top 20..

We’re now at the top 7, I should expect it to be Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Fangio, Clark, Surtees, and quite possibly Raikkonen.. There’s nowhere I’ve seen the BBC say that Moss is in the top 20…

  • Profile picture of matt90 matt90 said 9 months ago:

Because the number of current drivers was confirmed, and all have now featured, and Moss is generally rated as a top 20 driver and the best to never win the championship.

And Surtees simply isn’t that good. His biggest accomplishment was to also win on 2 wheels, which is unlikely to be a criterion for marking F1 drivers ability in F1.

There is no way Surtees and Raikkonen would get in the top 7.

  • Profile picture of Kingshark Kingshark said 9 months ago:

LOL at the idea of Raikkonen being in the top 7.

In my opinion, this is how I’d rate the final six of this list:

    6.) Stirling Moss
    5.) Juan Manuel Fangio
    4.) Ayrton Senna
    3.) Alain Prost
    2.) Michael Schumacher
    1.) Jim Clark

But Senna will probably be #1, he always is for whatever reason.

For Senna that’s a bit of an understatement personally, he’s contributed in quite peculiar & notable ways in the sense that he inspired many many fans in his time, particularly in Brazil & with his compassionate, mystique character, inspires many today (including myself very much) as well as re-establishing the GPA, main intention being to improve safety, ironically his death is what paved way to modern motorsport being incredibly safe.

To respond to @matt90, I can understand where you’re coming from regarding Stewart’s massive influence on safety but I think persona & character are parts of packages in being a great (or rubbish) driver, think about it, If upcoming articles on Senna, Clark, Fangio & Moss as well as completed ones in Alonso, Hill, Stewart, Lauda & Villeneuve were to exclude any information on personality & character then how would the articles present itself? If I’m honest, they would look more obscure & poor to say the least.

@younger-hamii – Yet Schumacher pretty much had the same effect on many F1 fans, particularly in Gemrnay. In fact, I’ve heard some pundits describing the number of Germans in F1 in the 2000s-10s as a bit of a Schumacher-inspired effect.

They make Formula 1 what it is, by being an integral part of the sport’s history, and giving that history a sense of grandeur. Without these stunning drivers of the past, the sport would not feel as important as it does. If the annals of F1 read as a series of names without character, how much would anybody even care who the current champion is? Do they really need to have done more than that? Each driver was incredibly talented and has their own powerful story. But ultimately, this is a list of the top 20 drivers, not the top 20 drivers who ‘did stuff for the sport’, they are simply the best/most legendary drivers.

@kingshark Even Schumacher has rated Senna as #1. Maybe you should ask him why! ;-)
