Dario Franchitti or Helio “Spiderman” Castroneves.

I think that Tom Kristainsen is a good shout too.

There can be no doubt about that McRae and Loeb are good racers, BUT they are rally drivers. We have seen how difficult it is to go from Formula 1 to Rally with Kimi Raikkonen. If I had to name one driver that could win the WDC this season and does not have a Formula 1 seat I would go for Tom Kristensen. He is simply not to be overlooked. I mean 7 wins at Le Mans he could have epic fights with Schumacher!

This driver doesn’t count as someone who never made it to F1, but Will Buxton’s feature on Giorgio Pantano in the F1Racing Magazine was very interesting. Apparently Alonso thought he was invincible and Rosberg had a poster of him on his wall! Since leaving Jordan, he has won the GP2 championship, but hasn’t even looked like getting back into F1. I really do recommend reading the article. It’s quite heart breaking.

Could be alot of people. Maybe even you or your Dad! :O

But for race car driver’s not in F1.. hmm it’s hard to choose. I’ll go with Rossi.

Bruno Junqueira should have got a chance.

What was Alonso smoking when he said Pantano was invincible? Racers like Kobayashi and Grosjean have proven that F1 is a whole different ball game in comparison to GP2. When Pantano was in F1, he was truly awful. He was one of the worst drivers I have ever seen. Even drivers like Sakon Yamamoto have proven to be way better than Pantano. Pantano is gone and I hope that doesn’t change.

But Buxton makes a fair point in Favour of Pantano in that article slr, just like Damon says, a very nice read.

I think some of the Indy greats would have been good in F1. Guys like AJ Foyt, possible Kurt Busch from NASCAR as well, but Collin McRae and Loeb as well as Rossi might have really been top notch.

@sbl: I agree with Rutherford. Too much of a true blooded Texan to be remotely interested by Formula One. But Foyt, also a Texan, won at Le Mans and would have driven anything with wheels provided he could win.

slr- was Pantano really that bad?? As I recall he was a bit like Lucas di Grassi: a bit slow but hardly a disgrace. Plus like di Grassi he was up against a tough teammate for a rookie

You can’t really call Pantano awful when his teammate, Heidfeld, scored only 3 points. 1 of which was in a race that Pantano wasn’t allowed to contest.

The Jordan was a dog of a car and Pantano came into the sport early. Two factors that essentially ruined his career.

On topic though, I hadn’t thought of Kristensen, but he would also get my vote too. Never really got why Junqueira didn’t get a drive too

I wouldn’t say he was as bad as Yuji Ide, but he made some silly mistakes in 2004, his stupid accident in Spa stands out for me. And correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t recall Pantano ever outpacing Heidfeld. Maybe I am being a bit harsh on him, but I see no positives on his F1 career, that’s why I being harsh on him. di Grassi was able to outpace Glock every now and then, and he could keep his car on the road mostly.
