Hairs, Red Bull told Webber in the radio to let Button pass because of “gaining an advantage but not losing a position”. So Webber lifted off there..

Weber on Alonso, Spa – two professionals, two gutsy racers.

@dam00r That’s the first time I’ve ever heard that bit of team radio – and I’m skeptical that it could have come from the pitwall *before* Button had come past him. The team couldn’t have known he cut the corner until after he did it – by which time Button was already on the back of his car and about to go past.

Webber had to lift off regardless just to avoid hitting the wall – I already covered that. The pertinent part is not how fast Webber was going – it’s that he was on the dry line, hogging the exit of the corner. In order to get past, Button had to flick his car in an instant onto the wet line, get the power down on the exit of the corner, and control the slide. That’s what makes it the pass of the year. In the Eau Rouge pass, what Alonso did made the overtake possible – he moved over and left room for Webber to try it. In the Canada pass, Button found himself in a situation a lesser driver would have turned into a shunt – and turned it into an overtake.

@Hairs I forgot about that Button on Webber pass at Canada. I’d nominate that one too.

@Hairs the drivers know if they cut a corner, they must yield. because people got penalties on the Grand Prix before for doing that.

I don’t think Webber was yielding if he was pushing enough to be oversteering almost into the side of Button as he passed.

@dam00r So… are you saying Webber lifted off because of previous precedent, or because he was told to on the radio? You seem to be contradicting yourself. If you’ve got a link to the team radio, I’d like to hear it.

In any case, look at the video again. Webber makes a balls of the corner. He cuts it, and recovers to the racing (dry) line. When he does that, Button is suddenly right on his rear wing. At that point, what happens next is 100% down to Button, not Webber. In order to “yield”, Webber would have to be the one to pull over onto the wet line and get off the racing line. He didn’t.

Even if Webber was yielding, what Button did was impressive I’d say! But I think Webber had nullified any advantage from cutting the corner as the conditions made it very slow and slippy through there.

@Hairs My english is poor, I live in Sweden so I’m having difficulities to explain what happened.. so bare with me..

    1. Last Grand Prix people had cut the corners and had to yield to the car in behind
    2. FIA said that next time if you cut a corner, you have to yield immediately
    3. Live red bull team radio said to Webber to yield
    4. Webber told to the media after the race, something around “I knew that I had to yield for Button because I cut the corner but didn’t want to lose ground to MSC(?)”

@dam00r incorrect – you have to yield if you cut the corner and overtook someone by doing that. You don’t have to yield anything if you didn’t gain a position.

  • Profile picture of dam00r dam00r said 1 year, 7 months ago:

@raymondu999 there’s a change of rules on that after Martin Brundles comments about ‘Not gaining a position, but not losing one either’ because you actually have to drive through every corner and If you’ve missed the corner you should actually “drive back and do the corner again” but this is obviously too dangerous

When did that happen? I can’t find anything on that in the FIA sporting regulations. As far as I know; that rule of having to drive back was only applied to Turn 4 in Korea.

Why has no-one mentioned Lewis on Fernando at Silverstone? In the wet, pulling off line down the start-finish straight. Very brave stuff, I thought.

    Webber – Alonso @ Spa.

Forgot about Hamilton on Alonso at Silverstone. Wish I could find a video to relive it.
