I would pretty much repeat David A’s list, with Scribe’s modifications to the Brits.

You know, it tickles me to see that after only one DNF that was his fault Hamilton has now suddenly become an error-prone driver, despite Monza being his first major one in a whole year. I guess the desire to put him down is stronger than considering that Singapore was a racing incident and his Suzuka crash had no impact (no pun intended) on his pre-existing gearbox problems. Whereas Alonso put in some frankly shockingly ragged performances and now he’s the greatest, despite having made more mistakes than Hamilton over the season.

If we subscribe to the theory that errors debar you from greatness then Senna shouldn’t be there either. But that’s okay because he was always pushing to the maximum when that happened? Guess who else that description fits?

Now in-race strategy, there’s a genuine area to explore. But again, too much is made of this. Not to sweep away the fact that Hamilton isn’t as good in this area, but Alonso has hardly shown any of the “tactical genius” he’s supposed to have, like I keep hearing. He’s taken some decisions himself but none that have really got him anywhere. Yet somehow he’s rated with Button.

    Anyway, back to topic:

    Brazil: Senna
    Britain: Moss
Germany: That Schumacher fellow. Ralf, is it?
Japan: Kobayashi. Though sadly it wasn’t hard for him to surpass his predecessors
    Italy: Ascari
France: Prost (though who wonders what Cevert would have turned out like)
America: Andretti or Phil Hill, don’t know enough
    Finland: Hakkinen of course!

It’s all personal opinion of course but although Hamilton’s matured he does still make mistakes (as Fernando has this year). They’ll get less and less in time and with experience. My big grievance was never Monza or Singapore as they’re just those things that can happen in a race but for instance, he always seems to clip people when he’s in a slipstream and generally he does appear more likely to make a mistake.

I haven’t made my list yet but Senna would be better than Hamilton for me because although he made a plethora of mistakes he has greater speed and was a more all round driver plus his only real challenge to the top spot of his country for me is Piquet snr.

Alonso isn’t at Button’s level of tactical thinking although as Button showed at Suzuka he does still get things wrong but when Alonso races and you hear him on the radio he’s thinking everything through; when to stop, what he needs, he’s calm and leads the team such as Singapore when he had his engine scare and he told his team he wouldn’t go in yet he’d finish the lap. He’s more of an all rounder although Lewis is slightly quicker at least in qualifying I feel.

Also, when it comes to his mistakes I’m keeping them in mind but like with Lewis I’m not delving too deeply into them. Alonso’s been all over the place this year but he’s had a longer career and it seems more likely a bad blip whereas with Lewis people weren’t that shocked at Monza. If Alonso keeps making them then I’ll knock even more points off. However, this thread was just to see who was the best from different countries as I was just curious so while I’d place Alonso above Hamilton I’ve done that on the tier thread while here Alonso doesn’t really have much competition to fight off from Spain :P

I think Kubica might just be Poland’s best ever F1 driver.

I don’t know if Alonso’s people would be shocked if he made the mistake Lewis made at Monza, it wasn’t a complete screamer, any driver on the grid could have made it. Cept maybe Button, an he wouldn’t have made the pass.

Anyway, Hamilton is one of the most consistant drivers in F1 bar none. And this shouldn’t be that much of a controversial statement. As a Rookie he went on a 9 consecutive podium run from his first race, in 2010 it took till race 13 for him to make a mistake worth mentioning. In 08 he was inconsistent but most new drivers are, Schumacher was in his second season, an whats he famed for? Anyway he won the title against inconsitant opposition. In 09 he was driving a dog car, pushing 110 was the name of the game as the consequences wern’t there.

Hamiltons consitances is mostly a matter of perception, mostly erroneous. Webber for 10, Hammy for 11 eh?

I just felt that Hamilton has not done enough to be placed with two of the best ever drivers. He may well get there but for me he has a while to go. I don’t get(even though many have tried to explain) the dislike for him, he is one of the very best to come into the sport for years and as far as I’m concerned the only true rival to the ability of Alonso. Every driver has made mistakes at some point but whenever he has he’s been slaughtered.

    Best driver from each country:

    Britain: Clark
    Brazil: Senna
    France: Prost
    Austria: Rindt (just!)
    Canada: G Villnuerve
    Italy: Ascari
    Spain: Alonso
    Australia: Brabham
    Finland: Hakkinen
    Germany: Schumacher
    America: Andretti
Incidentally, this is the order I would place them from most talented to least talented (though of course I reserve the fact that they are all hugely talented)

Can I just point out that Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart were/are both proud SCOTSMEN and, despite what the record books say, should be classed as such.

That leaves ENGLAND’s top 3, in my book any way, to be Moss, Mansell and G Hill.

…and which flag is shown above the winning driver?

Clark & Stewart would top my British driver list anyway.
Clark was just supreme in whatever he drove.

Moss would make the 3rd spot.
