If the championship consisted of 15 races, then this would be a tie:

I get what you’re saying the the first, third and last situations can happen. This one, however, can’t exist. The flaw being both drivers can’t finish in 2nd in the same race.

This is what F1 sporting regulations say:

7.2 If two or more constructors or drivers finish the season with the same number of points, the higher place in the Championship (in either case) shall be awarded to:

a) The holder of the greatest number of first places.
b) If the number of first places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of second places.
c) If the number of second places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of third places and so on until a winner emerges.
d) If this procedure fails to produce a result, the FIA will nominate the winner according to such criteria as it thinks fit.

Is that right? I thought unless they’d completed more than 90% then they were simply unclassified, and that countback couldn’t be used to split 2 drivers in that way.

@spaceman1861 Not when deciding the world champion but countbacks have regularly been applied to determine the holders of lower places in standings. For example, Alonso and Hamilton were tied on points in 2007 and they both had scored the same amount of victories, too. But Hamilton had five 2nd places, while Alonso had only four so Hamilton became the runner-up that year.

@matt90 yes they still would. I should correct a bit though. It’s not about who retires later chronologically/in terms of time. It’s about woh retires later in his/her grand prix. ie who has covered more of that grand prix distance.

I believe if it comes to a double-DNF situation as the title decider it will go to the person who has travelled more.

Driver A: 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 9 1 9
Driver B: 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 9 1 9 1

This is in a 19-race season, which is what we have now. The 19th win would go to a 3rd driver who isn’t in title contention (i.e. a fluke win).

@joey-poey sorry, in the hurry I mistaked the post. Sure, they can’t both finish in the same position in the same race, but they can swap positions in two races, putting them equal.
