    Nope, it was Taffy von Trips Ned

    My favorite was always Vittorio Brambilla – The Monza Gorilla

    Ned is right – he was also known as The Count – because he was one! Friends called him Taffy, though. :)

    I’m surprised no one’s mentioned Ayrton Senna. Both the first and last names were rare. Take them together, and you’ve got an instant classis.

    That nick was a little unkind because it wasn’t just “the count” but “count crash”.

    I’m surprised it took so long too. Senna I believe actually dropped the “da Silva” at the end of his name because it was too long and common. I may be wrong there but he did definitely have “da Silva” at some point :P

    Ivan Capelli and Eric van de Poele are pretty awesome. Pierluigi Martini is the best though – would love to have that name!

    Also how about Giovanni Lavaggi aka Johnny Carwash…

    @Jagged

    Alfonso de Portago’s name is awesome! Especially the “Cabeza de Vaca” part, which means “Cow Head”, I think.

    About Senna, I think he dropped the “da Silva” because it’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too common! I think about 1/10 people in portuguese-speaking countries are called “Silva” :P

    He was called as “da Silva” in his F3 days though…

    Scott Speeds a pretty awesome name to be a racing driver, shame he wasn’t very good.

    Maybe I’m lowering the tone a little now, but wasn’t there a driver ‘back in the day’ called Dick Seaman?
