F1 advertising – What does it really mean to you? (31 posts)

“F1 advertising – What does it really mean to you?”

Absolutely nothing personally. But in the grand scheme of things, making a company name bigger increases the chances that people will invest in it. So the majority of business will probably be made through increased investment rather than increased sales.

I guess it’s to do mainly with exposure. Seeing one company advertise from Silverstone to Yas Marina potentially opens all sorts of business opportunities. It’s not like Joe Average can benefit from many of the sponsors. So yes..more to do with investment and awareness than direct sales I think.

I don’t think any F1 sponsors have affected me at all. I’ve drunk a few cans of Red Bull late at night while doing essays, but I was aware of Red Bull from outside F1 as they used to show adverts for the drink all the time on Dutch TV when I lived there. Apart from that? I think I probably own something Puma but thats about it. Oh, and I do occasionally watch CNN!

I chose a Dell laptop over an Acer one last year at PC World, even though I knew Acer was a Ferrari sponsor. Which is just as well, because my friend later told me that her Acer is crap, and PC World only push them because they have a deal with them!

The company my Dad works for used to have a teeny tiny sponsor logo on the bottom rim of the 2008 and 2009 Renaults. I always used to ask him what was the point, as no one could see it! I guess they eventually agreed as they discontinued for this year.

Lets see – I have a Lenovo laptop which I bought while they were sponsoring Williams. The decision didn’t have anything to do with them sponsoring the team, it was simply the best buy at the time. I had Philips shaver and vacuum cleaner before they were sponsors in F1 and my printer is HP.

I don’t conciously buy a product just because it is a sponsor in F1 but I will check out their web page when I hear a sponsorship was signed with my favourite team.

The only purchase I remember I did just because of f1 sponsorship was to try Battery energy drink. I bought a can, drank it but never bought it again, energy drinks aren’t really my thing…

So that confirms my suspicions…none of us are actually inticed to buy products made by F1 sponsors solely because the manufacturers name appears on the airbox of an f1 car.

My initial suspicions that F1 advertising is solely a brand recognition exercise have been proved correct, which then leads me to this question: Why do they bother?!? With the amount of money companies spend sponsoring an F1 team they could embark on the mother of all advertising campaigns.

By the way, my Acer laptop is not the mank Ferrari branded one, it’s actually blue! ;)

I have a red Acer laptop. For some reason I then took up smoking.

Seriously though, apart from that I couldn’t name anything I have that’s in F1. Although I’ve had a Virgin mobile for years now.

I got a tag heuer watch for my 18th – Had I not seen F1 then I would never have heard of the brand. Furthermore, I got that years F1 edition, so I have been swayed by f1 advertising. To my knowledge i’ve never owned anything else from F1 advertisements! I suppose my one purchase is enough though!

Anyone who says that they are not affected by f1 advertising is a (often unaware) liar. The fact people are talking about whether or not it is effective or not is clear evidence that it is indeed effective, because by talking about it you are infact realising the sole reason for its existance; to increase brand awareness. I would have never heard of Autonamy software if it wasn’t for the fact their name and logo is plastered on the Mercedes turning vaines, likewise with pepe jeans and their involvement with Red Bull and Renault.

And to respond to Geemac who asked earlier ‘why do they bother?’ They bother because it is better to spend lots of money on sponsorship, which is tax free as opposed to retaining it and paying tax on it. It comes down to one huge tax avoidance scam with the benefit of brand awareness.

I actually wasn’t even aware Autonomy was on the Mercedes – I’m only aware of it because Tottenham have it as their shirt sponsor!

I never bought something because it was sponsored, but when I bought something that was sponsored I later said: oh look! It’s a sponsor of F1!

There are some items where it is difficult to buy an item that *isn’t* sponsored by F1. I have to admit I am still liable to go for 7Up over Sprite where both are offered due to the (now absolutely ancient) connection with Jordan. Other than that I can’t think of any examples where I’ve bought a product due to it having F1 connections. I may remember a lot of brand names that way but that generally encourages me to look beyond them when shopping for stuff because F1 sponsorees, in most things, are only the tip of the iceberg.

I have an acer laptop with intel, but at the time I didn’t even realise they were sponsors. I don’t think I own anything else. The only effest I can think of is that if I randomly decided to smoke (not that I ever would) and I was buying a pack I’d probably go for something like JPS, Mild Seven, Rothmans etc. and not Marlboro.

i have several computers with intel, but that doesn’t mean anything, they’re one of only two CPU suppliers, with a 65%+ market share, so two out of every three laptops and computers run Intel Chips. As for all the other brands, really, i couldn’t care less. I actively don’t watch TV, i don’t listen to commercial radio, and only “allow” adverts on some websites that implicitly require me to turn my Adblock off in firefox and chrome.

Honestly, if the cars were all plain red, plain silver, plain green/white/yellow.. it wouldn’t make the slightest difference to me. I am completely oblivious to advertising, and any money spent trying to get my attention is money wasted.

Where i live in africa, we have nothing. Nobody has anything. We smile, we laugh, we play music and we love each other. We don’t buy into the western world’s advertising frenzy. I follow F1 cos i love the technology and the speed factor, but the commercial side is irrelevant to me and everyone i know.

I bought a Philips electric razor, as it was F1 branded. Mind you it was heavily discounted as it had last years drivers on the box who both left the team.
My other razor choice was another Philips (same price) or another brand that I didn’t want to risk trying as I’ve had a Philips before.

Did the F1 influence me? Well I picked the branded one over the non-branded because of it, but then I would have chosen Philips anyway but not because it’s on the Williams.

Just because an item is F1 branded, doesn’t mean I’ll buy it over a non-branded item. I’ve seen F1 branded watches, but that puts me off. If the product is really expensive I do not want the F1 logo on it. If I’m spending £1000 on a watch why have a F1 logo planted on it?
