My question: name 5 world champions who have at some point in their F1 career retired a healthy car from a race (i.e. retired from a race when they were perfectly capable of continuing, and without being black-flagged). The races can be either before or after the drivers won their titles.

There may of course be more than 5 such drivers.

I can think of two; Lauda at Fuji ’76 and Prost at Adelaide ’89, other than that I have no idea.

Vettel at Monza this year (with the guy on the radio screaming “Stop the car!!” at him) – didn’t they drop out to avoid an engine-change penalty?
Damon Hill, in one of his last races for Jordan in 1999 – possibly the very last one in Japan.
Nigel Mansell, 1995, Imola (I think), parked his McLaren which was (all together now, in your best Brummie whine) “undriveable”.
Nelson Piquet, 1985, Portugal – the Pirelli wet tyres were hopeless, so he gave up.
I’m sure there was another wet race where Prost stopped, but can’t remember when.

Fittipaldi also withdrew from the 1976 Japanese GP, Damon Hill as @bullfrog said withdrew from his final race, also in Japan, and Button withdrew his BAR in Australia 2005 to exploit a loophole in the regulations which effectively gave him a free engine change for the next race.

And Stewart also withdrew from his final race after Cevert was killed.

The 5 I was looking for were:

    Niki Lauda in Japan 1976
    Alain Prost in Australia 1989
    Damon Hill in Japan 1999
    Jenson Button in Australia 2005
Michael Schumacher in Turkey 2005 (he had a technical problem, got it fixed dropping 13 laps down, went back out, but later parked)

Either irishf1 or Bullfrog can take the next question.

I won’t be able to post a question until tomorrow afternoon so @bullfrog can take it.

OK, what do all these drivers have in common?
Keke Rosberg, Alain Prost, Martin Brundle, Alex Wurz, Ayrton Senna.

  • Profile picture of Bullfrog Bullfrog said 7 months, 3 weeks ago:

That’s right @kevincucamest! They all raced for both McLaren and Williams.

    Thanks @cucamest

Who was the first formula one champion to die of natural causes?

  • Profile picture of the_sigman the_sigman said 7 months, 3 weeks ago:

Do you mean the first to die of natural causes (Hulme in 1992 even though he was driving at the time) or the earlier champion to die of natural causes (Fangio)?
