I was reading comments on the BBC Top 20 drivers of all time and it would be interesting for F1 Fanatic to come up with a current Top 10 based purely on the forum members here.
To add some stats, I would suggest that everyone add the following information:
- First Full F1 season watched
- Age
- Nationality
With enough data, a pretty good list could come out of it.
The criteria would be as follows:
“Regardless of their current team, how would you rate a drivers ability to perform well in qualifying and race with any given car under any given conditions”, which means much the same as “If everyone were driving the same car with the same tyre regulations, who would be the best ten drivers currently on the grid?”
We’re looking for all of it: qualifying (one-lap-pace), race pace, strategic skills, overtaking skills, style, tyre management, skills in the wet, learning curve.
I want to make it clear that this is not supposed to be an all-time list, based on achievements, but on your current impressions (the last few years) and the criteria above. In an all-time-list, MSC would be the number 1, and I feel he is the greatest ever. But under the criteria above, he probably won’t top my list.
Well, let’s see if we can get some data together.
