Now this is what I call a discussion! Objectivity, who cares!!
Most over-rated. Vettel of course, by a mile. He constantly reminds us that he’s number 1, but we all have pretty short memories…
So imagine it’s end of August 2010. We’ve just had a Hamilton win at Spa – another interesting race in an interesting season. 13 races, 5 different winners so far. And interesting times at Red Bull where Vettel and Webber are still fighting it out, not just for the championship (Webber is 2nd behind Hamilton. Vettel 3rd) but also for the “number 1″ spot in the team (remember “not bad for a number 2 driver” from a few weeks ago at Silverstone?).
Webber was on pole at Spa having out qualified Vettel for the 6th time this season (Vettel having qualified ahead of Webber 7 times. So, pretty close between one so great and a pretty average Australian.
Hamilton won at Spa with Webber 2nd. Vettel was well down the field after ramming Button and getting a drive-through (his second in 2 races – seems pretty rash, this young German). This was Webber’s 7th finish ahead of Vettel so far.
So all in all pretty damn close between Vettel and Webber (7/6 and 6/7 in qual and races) in 2010 up to Spa.
In 2009 Vettel beat Webber by 15 points behind Button – gaining 8 podiums each. Pretty close again.
In 2008 Vettel out performed Bourdais – no surprise their.
Now, in the last 10 months, only a fool (and that’s not me :) ) would argue that Vettel hasn’t been better that Webber, but I would contest that this is as much down to Webber under-performing. I think all we can confidently say at this stage is that Vettel is a bit better, overall, over the last few years, than Webber, who seems (on this forum at least) to be regarded as pretty average. So is the “digital-one” up there with the greats or is he just better than average?
