I’ve been watching it for as long as I can remember. I’m 19 now. My earliest memory is watching the last race of the 1997 season. The battle between Schumacher and Villeneuve, the controversial clash, and watching Hakkinen (who later became my first F1 hero) take the flag for his first of many wins. I started following F1 obsessively around 2007, when I started watching the practise sessions, and checking the websites every 5 seconds for news. :)

“My first memories of F1 were of a computer game called Grand Prix by Accolade, though at the time I had no idea F1 existed outside of the world of pixels and DOS prompts.”

I *loved* that game! I always remember driving Silverstone and Canada because they were the easiest X)

Sharing this mostly for perspective’s sake; I don’t imagine the details will be awfully interesting to anyone here. No family history or memories of Senna or anything like that!

I got into F1 on the Tuesday before Sepang this year. I know a person who sometimes seems incapable of talking about anything but F1, while I have always had a somewhat instinctive aversion to the sport. I’m from the United States, so I never had a reason nor much of an opportunity to examine my aversion, and so I never had. But it got to the point with this guy where I had to check it out to either establish that my feelings were well-grounded or admit that I was wrong. I was wrong! First race I watched was Shanghai a week ago – I have the impression that if I expect them all to be like that, I’ll be disappointed, but I have to say that *that was really awesome*.

Memories are pretty thin on the ground: I knew it was happening and all, but the biggest impression that the sport had made on me was Michael Schumacher’s 2004 tsunami relief donation. Besides that, it’s all Mario Andretti and Talledega Nights.

I was a little baby in the 90s, and my dad took me to the GP in melbourne. Ever since then, I have been obsessed.

    Thanks dad

2009, when I was returning to school after the holidays, I happened to see Button winning in Australia

Now I come to think of it, I don’t know why it was then that I got hooked, and not earlier.

I started watching in 2001 when I was 3 because my dad used to watch it. I didn’t really get the concept of it because I was too young. I just liked to watch every race and watch the Saubers and Jaguars, which I liked because of their colours. I started watching F1 more seriously in 2004, telling my dad to wake me up at 3am to watch the Australian Grand Prix.
I’ve been addicted to F1 since. All I can do is thank my dad for getting me into F1. I still remember that glorious moment in Suzuka 2006 when the ads just came on..
“Dad, I swear I just saw Schumachers car starting to smoke there!”
“Nah, Ferrari are always really reliable, don’t get your hopes up!”
Then a few minutes later the race resumed and we all saw the Ferrari up in smoke… lol :D

The first F1 race I properly watched was the European Grand Prix at Donnington Park in 1993. I was 13, and had been aware of F1 before through Mansell’s struggles down the years. I didn’t really appreciate exactly what Senna was doing, having missed the first lap. But what stayed with me was what Damon Hill was managing to do with Williams in only his 3rd race with the team, and how Rubens Barrichello was making quite an impression in only his third race before being cruelly robbed of a maiden podium. I was hooked from then on, despite many of the races in the mid 1990s on reflection being more like Bahrain 2010 on a regular basis than the spectacle offered by F1 in 2011. I’ve always found a race a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. As a result I’m spending my Stag weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix next month!

The first image I get about Formula 1 if I search in my brain for the oldest F1 memory is a certain red car with a certain German driver celebrating a race win. Since I remember I’ve watched Formula 1 every single GP weekend (of course I did not woke up to watch the Australian, Malaysian, Chinese, Japanese or others GPs), was I with my mum, alone or with my family. When my family had a big lunch with my cousins, grandparents, uncles and aunts we would always put a television on the top of a small tree and we would watch Formula 1. Then in 2007 the F1 broadcast went pay-per-view here in Portugal and then I got into F1. I started being addicted to it and in a small amount of time I noted that I couldn’t spend one day with reading news from Formula 1.

Am I the only person who really can’t figure out why the hell I ended up an F1 obsessive?! All I have are vague memories of a growing interest around 1999- 2000

I saw a trailer for the 1996 Australian Grand Prix. I watched a bit of the re-run of the race and since then I’ve watched every race since.

I have a very vague recollection of watching Imola 1994, I was 4 at the time so I’ve been watching it almost all my life

My very first memory of F1 was when Schumacher and Villeneuve crashed at Jerez, i was 10 at the time and i was just skipping through the channels with vaque interest. I remember i felt happy to see the outcome simply because Schumacher was already well established name in F1 so i didn’t want him to win (well, i was a kid then).

Then when Robert Kubica started his F1 carreer i watched some races, but my strong interest in F1 begun with interview with Jenson Button on Top Gear in 2008 i think, he struck me as a profoundly motivated and honest person, and then in 2009 on Top Gear website after 2009 Australian GP i read the headline of the article “Over the Button Moon” after his win. A win for a new team without any sponsors on it, which was even better. I was extatic, and i watched every F1 race ever since.

my earliest memory was being at my friends house when I was 5 and watching Monaco 1998 when Schumacher pulled into the pits for what felt like ten laps. Trouble was I was deaf at that age so I didn’t know what was happening. But oddly enough later that year I was at my Dad’s old pool club watching Spa and I can’t remember the pile up on the first lap but I can remember looking at everyones reaction when Schumacher hit Coulthard and Damon Hill winning.

I was blessed to come into F1 when I did.

My first memory is of Murray Walker and his unforgettable cry of “And it GO GO GO for the 2002 Australian GP.”

And we all know what happened about 10 seconds later.
