How good is Webber? (5 best current F1 drivers) (67 posts)

In a way it didn’t matter much though did it; I mean, his crash in Monza was not a chassis-related issue

Can I just say one thing that always troubles me about Webber, I see only the facts which are-
Webber has failed to shine many times dispite having arguably the best car in the field. I don’t think that he has done enough to keep his seat at RB and he hasn’t been able to consistently match his team mate, the first person you need to beat. Still, I believe he once refered to himself as a number two driver. True words coming from within, now he just has to be honest with himself.

Yes, Ray, clearly the Monza crash was a racing incident that could have been avoided but the constant change in chassis can not be helpful to a driver and compared to his team mate’s smooth run. Like you, I’d like to see this data for all the teams.

@Turbulence; all fair enough but this topic is about whether Webber is a top 5 driver, not if he is better than his team mate this year.

What I found more interesting actually; was that Mark needed 3 separate chassises while Seb only needed one for the first 10 or so races.

Exactly and apart from when a member of the RBR team was about the explain what was happening on the team’s forum, before it disappeared, I’ve heard nothing about why Webber had so many changes.

This is how I see it in my head:

    1. Alonso
    2. Hamilton
    3. Vettel
    4. Button
    5. Kubica
    6. Rosberg
    7. Webber
    8. Schumacher
    9. Massa
    10. Kobayashi

I wonder how many people knew that in 2000, Mark Webber actually beat Fernando Alonso in formula 3000 in both their first season in formula 3000 and equally matched cars.

@mnmracer. Proberly no one. Alot of people just go by the result of this year or last year. Which is really frustrating when they don’t even know about his career prior.

I know that’s not everyone but there are people who have no clue!

Webber is getting beat by a pheonominal driver. A driver who no doubt will win another championship; even more. Webber has never been beat by a Rosberg or a Coulthard(apart from 07), etc.

People just assume because he is being beat by a ‘phenominal’ driver who doesn’t deserve to be classified as a top driver, which is sad.

Webber in my book is one of the top drivers in Formula One at the moment. He has a great racxe craft, good overtaking skills, fast and bloody consistent. When others say he isn’t I don’t understand?

So really because he is being beat by Vettel doesn’t nesserserily mean he would be beaten by Button or Kubica. Maybe, maybe not; but people shouldn;t just assume going by the past two season results to be honest.

I also find it ingorant when people say Webber ‘lucked’ into a good team. Actually Webber who joined the RBR team in 2007 when they were mid-field has been an important part to the team to get where they are. Newey, Horner and Mateshitz themselves have said so.

To get started off on the right foot, I have to admit that I don’t have log book of all the results of the F1 seasons since 1968 when I first started watching, all I usually do is watch the races so don’t flip me off about statistics.

BUT, I’d really like to know if anyone has a clue as to why Mark Webber has gotten the shaft from his team’s engineers regarding getting off of the starting grid. I mean, if the differential settings and clutch release points are specified, how tough can it be for the driver to nail the throttle and match Vettle’s or anyone else’s performance?

Webber is no slouch, he’s better than anyone below 2nd place, and he can out-pass Vettle (at least w/o wrecking him) and works his way up through the field nicely in spite of getting a lousy start.

So, why is Mark’s side of the team failing to give him equivalent equipment race after race after race? I mean, this has been going on for too long to just blame it on the driver.

I would like to just add, being at Spa this weekend just gone and driving round the track, particularly Eau Rouge, makes Webber’s pass on Alonso truly phenominal…like the stuff of legends.

The entrance is actually very narrow (can fit 2 F1 cars very tightly side by side down there) and it’s very steep.

You need some serious cahoonas just to drive that corner quick let alone over take someone there!

Just like to add my old farts tuppence-worth, this forum started with a comment that Webber was an average driver with a very fast car when for most of his career he has been a very fast driver in an average car. I can clearly remember first taking note of his talent when he qualified on the front row of the Australian GP in I think a Williams, he kept that car either ahead or behind Schumacher all race till the engine blew up on the penultimate lap robbing him of a certain victory or maybe it was second ( which during the Schui years was almost as good). Didn’t know he had beaten Alonso in F3000.

@Hohum – I don’t know which race you’re talking about. In the 2006 race, he did lead before an engine fault, but it wasn’t near the end of the race, nor was he going to win (the eventual podium finishers had pitted when ahead of him). He might have got 3rd at the 2006 Monaco race though.

Just look at the qualifying results.

  • Profile picture of Dizzy-A Dizzy-A said 1 year, 7 months ago:

Okay, that was a very good quali performance, but he wasn’t in the hunt for a podium at the end of the race as Hohum claimed.

Let’s not forget – that his launch control failed (I think?) at the start of 2004 Malaysia. I remember great drives from him in Monaco 2005 and 2006. Didn’t he dominate Monaco in F3000 too?

Ironically I don’t really consider his debut drive to be super special; wasn’t it a large attrition race?
