If Massa got the boot, who should replace him at ferrari? (57 posts)

Poor Massa, only 1 race into the season and talk of replacing him picks up again.

I’d suggest everyone read this excellent article and give Massa a chance before having him throw in the towel.

Nobody talking about why Massa is no longer the driver he once was? Could it be the accident? Whatever it is, he is a shadow of the old Massa that was a point away from becoming the WDC.

I think Ferrari would take on somebody young and with potential, like Hulk, or somebody mid-career who can play #2, like Sutil, or somebody old to fill a gap quickly and get some results, like Webber :)

ie. anybody. There is no real formula to how Ferrari pick their drivers. It is all up to how Stefano sees it. I think a driver like Button or Webber leaving mid-season to drive for Ferrari is out of the question. There is no way they would be released with all the information they have/know about competing cars.

    Kimi!!

No, of course not. It’d have to be the Hulk or RoGros, maybe Liuzzi as a temporary replacement until Perez or Bianchi could step in for the drive. But he won’t be sacked this year in my opinion. I used to be a devout Massa fan but I’m sorta giving up on him right now…. hopes he can return to his 08 form that we all grew to love.

Kubica if he would have race in 2011, I think he will race with Renault until 2012.One choice may be Kimi as nowadays he finds WRC boring as it won’t take too long for him to dislike Nascar.

i’d try Perez, but in Ferrari they don’t like gambles…
Maybe, without the injury, Kubica was the perfect replacement, but now we’ll see.

Definitely Hulkenberg for me. Alonso’s not going anywhere and won’t respond well to a ‘joint #1′ situation, so guys like Kubica and Webber are out of the picture. Rosberg is quietly de-facto #1 at Mercedes and isn’t going anywhere. Anyone else in the midfield is either too risky/inexperienced at the moment (Kobayashi, Buemi, Perez, Petrov), or too much of a plodder (Sutil, Glock, Kovalainen).

Hulk’s ideal because he’s proved he’s quick all through his career, Ferrari don’t really need sponsorship money from him, but he wouldn’t be too much of a threat for Alonso in the short term. In a couple of years however – as with Massa pre-accident – he’ll blossom.

There’s a caveat to this: Ferrari will have an eye on the road car business’s markets, and they would LOVE to have a driver from Russia, China or India. So if Petrov has a good season… don’t be surprised if he shifts to the dancing donkey at the end of the year.

No offence to Dan, but most of that article is irrelevant as to if Massa can bounce back, since most of it is about what he did before the accident, which is surely the biggest factor in all of this.

Some drivers just fade away – look at Jarno Trulli, a guy I consider a bigger waste of space on the grid than HRT.

I don’t buy that being slower than Alonso is no bad thing. Fact is he’s often slower than a lot more people than just Alonso. If he doesn’t improve he has no excuses and needs to go, even if the only person who can replace him is Hulkenburg or Glock. Ferrari were quick to brush all the “we love you Felipe” stuff under the carpet for the sake of 7 extra points in the championship for Alonso, they’re certainly not going to keep him on if he has a bad 2011 just because he might get better again.

@BrawnGP – I would say Williams, Renault or even Mercedes.

Whoever asks ‘how high?’ when Ferrari say ‘Jump!’

You have to wonder how many or the current drivers, having seen 15 years of a definate ‘first driver, second driver’ reigime at Ferrari, would happily and knowingly accept playing second fiddle for however long they stay at Ferrari. It’s not like they can even work their way up through the team. Irvine only got a chance because Schumacher broke his leg, Massa only got a chance because Kimi got bored. Neither of them were promoted to the ‘first’ driver. They were either replaced, or a new number 1 was brought in.

So it’s not so much a compliment that we can’t find a replacement for Massa because he does such a good job of being walked all over, it’s just more like there’s no-one stupid enough to want to become the Ferrari number two. And as has been said before, when was the last time Ferrari took on a rookie? Have they ever done so? When Massa finally jumps ship into either the dinghy of a Ferrari test driver role, or out into the Ocean Blue (and who’s likely to pick him up then? I’d bet on nobody) It might be time they have to.

I can’t understand how some people say Liuzzi will replace Massa when Renault, who are less than Ferrari, refused him and he is currently driving with HRT. This year if one of the two drivers the Ferrari Driver Academy can prove useful as the Italian team can choose Perez or Bianchi (if the injury occurs in the second part of the season and they aren’t fighting for the Constructors’ Championship). If they need to score points they’ll put Fisichella or Gené (I have doubts on the latter), if they can use the situation at their advantage they’ll make Bianchi debut. Liuzzi would be the choice if a repeat of 2009 happened, when Bianchi was too young and their test drivers were away from the track from too much time.

Ferrari have a policy of letting their drivers fight it out then when one establishes a lead then back them so it wouldn’t be a number 2 position.

They took on Gilles after he’d had only a couple of races for Mclaren.
