No – duplicate content threads will be closed on the forum. The main site comes first.
Hi Keith, I understand and completely agree that the main site should come first, however I believe that a blog and a forum serve two different purposes and can compliment each other perfectly.
I don’t believe the comments section on the main site is the best place for discussion because it is not always easy to see who was the last commenter or where someones comments fit in. Also there is no way of knowing which articles have had new comments recently.
A forum by it’s very nature is designed for discussion, posts are always in chronological order and recently discussed topics are at the top of the forum.
The comments section should be used for just that, comments on the relevant article.
For example, recently someone started a thread in the forum asking about traveling to the Japanese GP, you closed the thread and pointed them towards the 2010 Japan GP article’s comments. My argument would be that if that person had put their query in the articles comments section no one would have known they had posted there unless they went and looked at the article, at least in the forum any one viewing the forum would see the thread and could have replied.
Another example is the recent ruling on Ferrari team orders, that has drawn a huge amount of comments and discussion, however in the next day or two that article will move off the front page and probably be forgotten or not seen by a new visitor to the site, if the discussion had been allowed to continue in the forum it would probably have continued and been easier to follow.
This site contains a wealth of information and to check all old posts for new comments isn’t feasible!!
