Is the World Championship a bad thing? (23 posts)

    What a brilliant idea!
I don’t think the FIA would go with calling it the “Tilkedrome Champion”!
Although this year it looks like Vettel will be champion of all 5, apart from Rookie of the Year of course!

To be honest, I just believe there are too many races. We should never had more than 15 races. Even with non-championship races, the F1 banner is very strong, so it’s not like FOM would lose much money if they reduced the actual championship races.

I don’t understand why people would want non championship races

if they don’t count towards the championship then that it a lot of appeal to the viewer gone. It’s also alot less appeal to the teams.

there were not many non-championship races with a full compliment of front running cars. and these days I’m sure alot of teams wouldn’t bother.

If you want to split up into different championships based on location then we could end up with something like the many Le Mans series going around at the moment.

1 series, 2 championships (drivers and constructors) and a set number of races is so much better than what we could have.

What’s nice about non-championship Grands Prix is that everyone’s target would be to win that race as there is just that race and not something bigger. In a Championship some drivers may want just to get the car to the end in the points, as they’ll have more occasions to win, but in a non-championship GP winning is winning everything, whilst in a championship GP a win is 1/20 of the Championship.

Excellent work Alex! I considered tallying up the wins but I just couldn’t be bothered.

I still think though that it’d be more meaningful to choose 4 or 5 ‘classic’ races like Monaco, Silverstone, Monza and Spa, all of which have 60+ year histories, rather than including less prestigious GP’s like Hungary and Barcelona

Cheers Greg. Yeah, you could do that, but I wanted each race to count towards something, so not being (entirely 100%) Tilke tracks, Barcelona and Hungaroring made it into the ‘Classic’ section. I also didn;t want races to count towards more than one trophy, hence why Monaco is only in the street category and not in the classic category.

I’d also like to rename the ‘Grand Prix Classic Champion’ as ‘The Grand Prix Classique’ and the ‘Tilkedrome Champion’ to ‘The Tilkedrome Titan’.

    Yeah, nice.

    Edited second version!

I’m with Ned. I don’t personally feel all the races should be part of something. I’d probably do:

    Classics Cup:
    - Silverstone
    - Spa
    - Monza

    Monaco (like the Indy 500)

    Pacific Cup:
    - Australia
    - Malaysia
    - Japan

    Americas Cup
    - Canada
    - USA
    - Brazil

A Cup Series would have to have at least three and the race would have to be on the calendar for the last 10-15 years* or has a history in the sport, or something like that.

*apart from the Classics of course, these would be immortalised forever and no others could join unless, say, Japan and Australia became the only two Pacific countries on the calendar again

The rookie title doesn’t make any sense in F1, since there is usually only one or two rookies in the field, and usually one of the rookies drives a bad car, and the other one drives a totally useless car.
