    According to the Sci-Fi anime Valvrave the liberator, it appears to still be on the calendar about three hundred years from now, when 70% of mankind is living in space:

    300 years of development have left the cars looking remarkably like… well, Formula Ford cars from 10 years ago. That can’t be right, can it? I thought it would be all WipEout and F-Zero by then.
